My grandfather was born in 1883 and died in 1953. Had a lot of stories about life growing up in the late 1800's. My grandparents were married in 1919 in Chicago where my mom was born. Miss them all and the history I heard about that they all lived through. I guess I've lived through some interesting times myself.

My grandfather had told me stories about his great grandfather who was born in Buffalo Gap, Texas in 1859. He fought in the Lincoln County War and went by the name of Henry Roberts, but my grandfather believed there was no connection with Brushy Bill because he fled from New Mexico to Hico under the name Barlow Winters after he supposedly killed a man in a saloon over a card game. He told me that he was actually at Pete Maxwell's house the day before Billy the Kid was shot. He said many times that Henry aka Barlow had felt unsafe at the house, but he had always felt unsafe out of the 4 times he went to Maxwell's. However my grandfather is still alive at 62 years old and the thing is that all the stories he told me came from a journal that was written by my great great grandfather. Every time he was telling me a story, he opened and read from the journal. He mentioned the McSween house while he lived in New Mexico, Sheriff Brady, the jail house, the hunt for Billy the Kid and so on. Now my grandfather is putting this journal in his will so it'll be passed on to me after he dies. He said that on the last page, a promise must be given cause my great grandfather never told his father about his journal. Maybe it's a promise that I can only share some information on regarding real details of the many things in New Mexico, but I'll have to wait and see

@@1angryscotsman Yeah he told me a lot about the people involved during Billy’s manhunt. It made me feel like I was there during the whole chase. My great great grandfather was very descriptive with his writing. Even Pete Maxwell's house was exactly as I imagined after seeing a real picture of it. Hopefully I'll find more info in the journal and I'll try to update you on it

Cannot imagine a more depressing site to end up. Of all the beautiful places in NM - even around there - THIS looks like the prison yard from hell on some distant planet. Whether Billy is there or not, bones washed away in the flood or not, this is just awful.

Fort Sumner was, in fact. "the prison yard from hell" to those who were there during its service. The whole of the actual fort is long gone, not an adobe brick left. It was active only from 1862 to 1868, as a forced encampment for Navajo and Mescalero Apache. It was such a disaster that they let the Indians return to their home grounds. The soil and water were all poor quality and farming efforts were unsatisfactory. The buildings were sold to Lucien Maxwell in 1870, and he created a largely Hispanic community of about 200 people there, sheep and cattle being the main business. It was enough to be supporting two saloons by the time BTK was hanging out in 1879-1881. The Maxwell family never owned the land, just the buildings, so in time a new town grew up a few miles away. The old fort was lost to Pecos river flooding, abandonment and deconstruction for use in the new town. It's a myth, however, that bodies were washed away in flooding. The 1904 flood always cited did nothing but fill the cemetery with water. The walls in existence at the time allowed the water to pool to a certain height, but there was no way for things to actually wash away as rumored. Proof of this is that within a year or two of that flood, a contractor for the Army located and moved over 20 soldiers' remains from period when Fort Sumner was active. All were found exactly where they were supposed to be, and he mapped out where The Kid and his Pals were. This map is in the public domain with other records of this effort, and it matches virtually exactly where the Kid's grave is marked today.

I've been to the Fort Sumner gift sbop that has this grave. It certainly isn't Billy's actual grave, but people keep stealing the headstone so the owners of the gift shop put a cate around it. I was there around 2011 and it was 108°-109°. Even took a picture of the temp reading in my Ram 2500 Cummins.

I was Home after being gone 3 weeks one time.I was up early and watching a Show about how the old Outlaw Jesse James lived on past the time they said he died. They had an Fbi Facial recognition expert on there. The one Guy they were Asking the FBI expert about I wanna say JD Dalton. The Expert said JD Dalton had all the Facial Scars the Jesse Was known to have.He said on that alone that that in his opinion he was Jesse James.Alot of People didn't know but the Governor of Missouri is who signed the Death Certificate and was a real good Friend of the Family.JD Dalton everybody always asks Where did he get the name Dalton From? The guy said Jesse's Mother her Maiden Name was Dalton. When they Dug up Jesse Years ago the way it sounded they Found a Bullet in the Grave but the way it sounded they didn't have enough bones to test for DNA.They laughed because the one Guy Said they had a Tooth they got from the Fireplace Mantle in Jesse and Frank's Moms house.Like the one Guy said they don't even know who the tooth belonged too.Like Bob and Charlie Ford. They thought they would be thought of as Tough Guys they killed The Great Jesse James. They were thought of as Cowards for shooting an Unarmed Man in the Back.I used to pick up in Keokuk Iowa at a place for Chrysler and an Old Guy heard me talking About Jesse James. He Stop and said He had a Farm in Missouri that he said Was an old Hideout thar was where he said Jesse Used before being killed. He said I could come down and he would show me where it was.I called him 5 or 6 years ago and he already died.I told him around that Cabim if you see Strange Marking in trees there's money around there Somewhere.
