The Wild West Extravaganza

Күн бұрын

Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory was the setting of a brutal conflict between rival factions vying for control of the county's dry goods and cattle interests. The Lincoln County War, as it came to be known, began in 1878 and persisted until 1881, a time of lawlessness and bloodshed in the Old West. One side of the feud was led by James Dolan, a powerful figure who wielded a monopoly over dry goods through his establishment of "The House". The other faction was established by English-born John Tunstall and his partner Alexander McSween, who opened their own competing store with support from established cattleman John Chisum. Both sides gathered lawmen, businessmen, and criminal gangs to their aid, setting the stage for a violent and deadly confrontation. The Dolan faction was aligned with Sheriff William J. Brady and supported by the notorious Jesse Evans Gang. The Tunstall-McSween faction organized their own armed posse, the Lincoln County Regulators, with their own lawmen as town constable Richard M. Brewer and Deputy US Marshal Robert A. Widenmann. And of course the notorious Billy the Kid. The War was characterized by a series of brutal revenge killings, starting with the murder of Tunstall by members of a Dolan-authorized posse and the Evans Gang. The Regulators retaliated by killing Sheriff Brady and others in a series of violent incidents. The conflict continued to escalate for several months, culminating in the epic five-day battle of Lincoln, which resulted in the death of McSween and the dispersal of the Regulators. William H. Bonney rode into Lincoln County a teenager on the run from a noose. By the time he came out of McSween’s burning home, guns blazing, he was well on the way to becoming the legend Billy the Kid. This is part three of the series on Billy the Kid. For the previous two installments see the links below. #wildwest #history #western

Good narration. AS far of what is in Lincoln. There are still a few original building I have walked the beautiful little town a couple of times and driven through it several over the last 3 years. The Murphy Dolan store, Tunstall's store there is another couple of buildings too. One of the round clay brick structures they held natives back in. Tunstall and McSween are buried out back of the store. They have Billy's Mother's grave marker in the old Murphy Dolan store. Now if you want the best New Mexico Cheese Burger I have ever had it is in Fort Sumner at the Daily Grind. And the Billy the Kid Museum is worth a walk through. There are a lot of interesting thins in there not just stuff on Billy the Kid

There was a lot to the feud. The.Lawrence Murphy, James Dolan, John Riley, and Sheriff William Brady Faction were mostly Irish Catholics and Democrats. They detested Englishman, agnostic, and "Republican" John Tunstall, Scottish-Canadian Presbyterian Alexander McSween, and Tennessee-born English, Scottish, and Welsh John Chisum,. Religion and political affiliations played a big role, whether real or perceived by one faction or the other.

You gonna read for it? I’m excited for it to finally happen! Thankfully we don’t have to rely on the word of Pat Garrett. Trust me, I don’t know any historians who don’t have issues with Garrett’s version of events. There are many unanswered questions. That said, there were many eyewitness other than Garrett. A lot of these people lived for decades and were interviewed by journalists and historians and some of them even wrote their own books. Not a single person who was at Fort Sumner in 1881 even so much as hinted at Billy’s death being a hoax. I’m hoping to do an episode on it in the next two weeks addressing many of the popular misconceptions concerning the Kid’s death.

@@WildWestExtravaganza I told my manager to flag it if it comes up. Even just BG I have the benefit of being a better than intermediate horse rider, with stunt training. Plus I weld plenty of that “Old West” type of ugly. It would be a dream to do ANY western. YG3? I’d be satisfied with my career. (Still need a Star Wars Credit too) As to the rest… I don’t like that you make the BBR argument null & void. I’m researching myself mainly because I want to believe it. Which you admitted to yourself in the first video I saw of yours. Curious: Have you been watching the MGM show? Billy The Kid? I’ve been enjoying it. Except the most resent episode. They showed what I believe is a more historical accurate depiction of what went down at MCS ESQ’s house. (Aside from that little tongue kiss in the woods between Jessie & Billy.) It bummed me out. Probably because there was no flying luggage ambush with Estivez. lol. Col Dudley was Court Marshaled was he not? So many parts of this time fascinate me. I want to believe BTK was virtuous etc. But Earth seldom works that way. If you want to see it first you have to be it I suppose.

@@WildWestExtravaganza I highly recommend it. The more I research the less cred I can give BBR. It is at best circumstantial evidence that is so easy to forget came from Morison. I wish they would allow the DNA to be studied. Because I don’t feel we have the real story. But again that’s the imaginative part of me that always needs an intellectual bone to chew on. (I was convinced the real life Paul McCartney died in 1963 because the only evidence to the contrary was “That’s ridiculous.” I still want to believe Courtney had Kurt killed. And that JFK was killed by Dom DiMaggio in Houston with a candlestick. One of these days I’ll find a real one. Just learned about the workbench. That should keep me occupied for a bit.

@@WildWestExtravaganza I’m sorry to keep bothering you. You have the misfortune of being somebody’s whose opinion I respect. I have never heard anything about John Miller (until this week) as another possible guy who escaped recorded history. Is there any validity to the claim that he is BTK? I figured you could save me the trouble of going down another rabbit hole chasing a theory I more want to believe than the facts actually allow to be possible. And the "young guns" saw Tunstil as a means of "respectable" employment. Truth told they all still had a demon of incompatibility to authority...even if getting paid for as much. One has to encompass the whole of history here...not just a cookie/cardboard cutout of it. Even the Indian aspect. Life was tuff or die every day. The tuff seemed to abuse their ability...much like the robber barons.

Either that OR Billy was just a Psychopath, who needed little reason, if any, to Kill. Or somewhere in the middle. Walter Noble Burns is the author that started the Mythologizing of Billy The Kid, portraying him to be, not unlike, Robin Hood, in the same way that John Newman Edwards did to romanticize Jesse James. Both were successful in their attempts, and made a few bucks in the process Edwards helped make Jesse Famous while he was still alive. Billy was well known locally & in NM Territory, but it was only after his death that Burns did the same for Billy......Who undoubtedly would have Loved It, but didn't live to enjoy his new found fame.

John Middleton was John Tunstall's favorite. He wrote home to England regularly and Middleton was mentioned in detail and very fondly. John Tunstall was likely asleep in the saddle when he was confronted. He had been making legal arrangements and filing documentation in Ft. Sumner(?) and elsewhere. He he covered some 150 miles in 3 days on horseback and was exhausted. Middleton was yelling at him and he was unresponsive until too late, woke up confused, and saw his killers, whom he attempted to approach waving to them, and was immediately shot. Buckshot supposedly could not raise his right arm much above chest level. He knew if he surrendered he would not live much longer and he was probably right. One of the kids who lived at the Mill said that big buffalo rifle that killed Dick Brewer was at the house for many years and he would shoot it for fun and could never hit anything with it.

I have wondered if anyone has done any videos on other Regulators of their lives before and after the Lincoln County War, I haven't been able to find much on Dirty Steve Stevens, but just thought that Jose Chavez y Chavez or Charlie Bowdre or Dick Brewer might make interesting videos.

Thank you! I sent out a newsletter a few days ago all about Doc after the Lincoln County war but I haven't decided if I'll record it. I'll probably do an episode on Henry Newton Brown in the future.

@Wild West Extravaganza oh cool that should definitely be an interesting episode. In Young Guns 2 for some reason they combined his name with Jim French to make the character Hendry William French. Kinda always wondered why they did that.

Quick question. You said that you wondered why Tunstall's men didn't go after the posse that killed him at the scene. Wasn't there something like 15 total men in the posse that was chasing after them before the sub posse broke off after Tunstall? I am just saying... if they knew that they were that outnumbered, I could totally understand not storming in after them.

I believe the reason the Murphy Dolan faction was going broke was the same way it happens today. The Santa Fe ring was taken to big of a share and likely wanted it increased.

Your comment around 9:15 punched me in my nostalgia gut. My best friend and I would play Young Guns when we were kids. He was Billy and I I was Chavez flipping and throwing knife shaped sticks I found in the yard. Though the Young Guns 2 soundtrack is most certainly not he best collection of songs it is still one of my favorite albums and 'Santa Fe' is one of my favorite songs to this day.

I remember reading the authentic life of billy the kid by par garret back in high school (a little over 30 years ago so my memory may be wrong) but I thought I remembered a part in there where a regulator maybe Salazar in which you mentioned) played dead. After everything was done do,an and party celebrated as you said with Salazar still playing dead. The story went on, again if I recall correctly, that some of the men even took pop shots at the dead bodies including Salazar, who just laid there and took it. I remember being so amazed by that. In the end the story went on saying once the men cleared out Salazar got up and crawled away where he would seek medical attention. I read that and was like damn dude was a warrior! Now until your video I always thought the man in the book was named Chavez, not THE Chavez, just another one named Chavez, but hearing you say Salazar that might have been the name. As I said I read it over 30 years ago but I have never heard anyone tell the story of this man. You were the closest saying how he pretended to be dead. Anyway maybe it’s all a myth, I never really know what’s the truth when it comes to Billy the Kid, but damn what good stories it makes.
