Truly a great live performance of a timeless song. The horns are like an afterburner taking this gem supersonic. The song was from 1986 but it doesn't sound dated, even today.

It is a brilliant song. Maybe not a favourite for the masses (?) but for jazz lovers and great band players this is the best. This is a sophisticated piece of work and wow with that brass it is a real treat. I wonder if other artists have covered it. It would be a challenge that's for sure.

Asking a 70-year old man to perform songs flawlessly or even close to the originals that came out over 30 years ago is insane. It's hard to hit those notes as a voice cracking teenager, let alone an old guy. He is much better than Sting who has also covered this song and lost his voice while doing it.

Ive got to disagree in the late 1970s he was much better! I love Billy Joel and am seeing him in November. I think this is a really good performance and played in a different way. He doesnt hit the high notes as well and it doesnt have the same energy as say the 1987 ussr live version but he is 64! I thought it was dam good though!

Well, he's an old man now..... No surprise, though. Many people on (Shall we call it) the vets circuit sing pieces in lower keys. Phil Collins for a start. Even as long ago as 1984, BJ was singing An Innocent Man half a tone lower than as originally recorded, and by 1989/90 was getting Pete Hewlett to sing the high register stuff.

Don't be mistaken. I love Billy Joel. I've been a fan since the 80's. He's still a great musician but his vocals have gone to shit. He needs to drop an octave when going to the high portion of the song and can't do without the backing vocals. No doubt due to the alcohol abuse.

He's right but it probably has much to do with Billy Joel approaching 70 years old (or mid-60s here) trying to sing a song he wrote and recorded 30 years ago. He probably only chose to include this song in his set due to the event and it being one of his jazzier sounding songs too and when you consider that it was presumably part of a set, compared to if need be only singing the song by itself when it was recorded in the studio (even if more than one take) then taking into account all of that, it's only natural that it won't sound just like the recorded version.

I’m probably really late with this comment but still : Why does it bother anyone that he doesn’t sing those high notes all perfect and flawless as he did 30 years ago? I mean everybody knows that he could do it when he was younger and is it really that substantial that he sings every note like it was a record? What really counts is the soul and the meaning behind it and as I consider he hasn’t lost that. Not even a bit of it. And isn’t it the imperfection which makes it even more humane and beautiful? Ok I guess before I’m getting to sentimental I’m gonna stop at this point 😂
