@mythoceanas8874 Жыл бұрын
Just to add more context, the song was original written by Bobbie Gentry in the late 60s as a feminist statement. The story telling style is Southern Gothic. The mother has a terminal illness and she worked out a deal for the 18 year old Fancy to become an escort. Based on the first line of the Chorus people think she was forced, but the second line “if you want out, well, it’s up to you” is the option. Just like “The Night the Lights went out in Georgia”, Reba took an old hit and breathed new life into it. But sometimes it’s hard to put perspective into it based on the time it was written.

Billy you must understand the reality of the story is that Fancy's poor family had been left further impoverished by desertion of her dad and it only got worse once her mom got sick and the reality hit that she was dying. This left her mom with very little money and time to secure her children's future. She knew the baby would eventually have be taken by welfare and was young enough to be put into a new family so there was hope for it. Her real desperate concern was for of age Fancy who would have little to no opportunity out of her circumstances. Fancy was obviously quite beautiful and her mom knew that was her only card she had to play as her way out. It was a sad perfect storm that converged to give few options for Fancy other than to " Just be nice to the gentlemen" so they would be nice to her. Fancy's mom invested in her future by spending all of the money that was left in dolling her beautiful daughter up with the purpose of attracting the attention of men. None of this was done by the mother to benefit herself as she knew she was dying , it was only done out of love to benefit Fancy and hopefully secure her a better life. Her mother gave her the tools she needed , pointed her to where she should go and then let her grown daughter go to decide her future for herself . Fancy understood her mom's reasoning and the circumstances that really gave either of them few choices. This why she couldn't hate her mom for what she did or blame her for it as she did indeed get out and end up greatly better off.

Technically it's not child trafficking because Fancy was 18 years old, the age of consent. It's just sad but also to show that no matter how bad things are, you do what you have to do to get out of that. It's more of the plight what women have had to go through, since forever, to survive. Little girls being sold out to older men for their own satisfaction. But for Fancy, she became who she was but she still made sure that she made the decisions, they weren't made for her. That's kinda what the message is, at least what I interpret from it. 😎👍
