Yeah it's all just mixed waste around here in Huntingdonshire... very odd way of doing it! Then again I learned recently Milton Keynes doesn't even use bins, everything in disposable bags. Wheelie bins are the only thing that separates us from animals.

Same here, where abouts are you? I worked for BwD and we have blue bins for cardboard but they also gave people those bags, I'd just tip the contents into a blue bin with enough room.

Interesting seeing how other parts of the country do their waste collections. Where I am (Cherwell District Council) we have a green bin for general waste, a blue bin for all recyclables and a brown bin for compostables. But from 1st March we will have to pay for our brown bin to be collected (£40 a year) (on top of council tax) and have got a new food waste caddy which will be collected every week.

We offer *2* brown bins for free, as the council makes money off the compost recycler. I have said we should charge for bins, many places only offer one and still charge. I have visited properties with 4/5/6 brown bins that dutifully get emptied each fortnight. If the crew is lucky they may get £10 at Christmas.

Where I am in Nottingham (uk) we have various coloured bins for waste, like where I am my local borough council (Gedling), is Brown for Garden waste (paid for each year), Green waste for recyclables, Black Bins for general waste and also a green box for glass. Yet in Nottingham City Council have all brown bins with different coloured lids for the waste which is confusing, and bags for glass collections and some other district councils also have separate compartments on the trucks for cardboard and mixed recycling waste

3 Loaders and a driver working rounds makes most streets piss easy in my experience. I've worked on larger trucks out in towns as well as smaller trucks out in the countryside (smaller truck does sometimes do smaller estates in towns I work in Shropshire) for recycling and that extra person helps a great deal. The job is one of the most mentally rewarding I've done. Like when you finish the day, you feel good. Been able to do it, haven't missed a single property, get to go home at a decent time (most days lol). Of course you're always going to get those members of the public that are holier than thou but the majority of the people are really appreciative of it, especially since the Pandemic first began and cardboard waste went through the roof

This is the paper/cardboard recycling drop off and there is lots of truck and plant movement. As such, with their front end loader equipment there will be a degree of spillage moving things about to different piles.

In Norther Ireland here our lads don't get worked as hard, we have bins for recycling and if anything is left on the floor the men don't have to pick it up, though different areas have different systems. Always interesting to see work done from a different perspective keep er going lad.

Interesting to see how other towns and cities collect their waste. In Plymouth, it's a brown bin for general waste, a green bin for recyclables and a dark grey bin for garden waste (which is collected free of charge and composted for use in parks).

@@wheelerd02 Plymouth City Council has been doing it for a while. It's something other councils should investigate, If gardeners can't wait for the refuse truck to collect, they can take cuttings and other garden waste to the City's main recycling centre to be turned into compost.

Loved the last two videos, lots of action haha Very interesting how Chelmsford does garbage collection, your videos don‘t fail to entertain me :P Really like your commentary too, makes the video more interesting. Very good you mention turning the auto off on the lifters when doing anything near it, a small action that can potentially save your life. Especially these low level Terberg lifters can be very sensitive and faulty, like you said, don‘t wanna end up crushed in the back. The guys on this round seem to be very chill and cool too, especially that one guy speaking four languages, that‘s a skill not many have, kudos to him. This crew is very efficient and fast too, especially when you got an extra loader but even without one like in the last video, they were pretty fast. The area seemed to be a bit more narrow too, got quite a few idiot drivers just in this video. Even made it harder since all three trucks were operating in the same area at the same time blocking each other a bit but oh well, nothing you can do except wait and be patient. 7am to 5pm sure is a very long day, how many trucks does Chelmsford have for cardboard collection? Around my place in Germany we also start at 7am but we almost never finish at 5pm, that‘s insanely late. Usually last bin around here goes on at around 12am, 1pm at latest depending on the round and season. On some days, you got rounds that are finished by 11am or even earlier. The round my house is on, garbage usually finishes at 10:30am, no time messing around haha. Start at 7am, First load done by 9am, rushing to the incinerator, start second load at around 9:45am, finishing second load at around 10:30am. Granted it‘s a small dense area and the driver has driven the same round for years now so he knows every corner but still, I‘m always amazed at the energie of the loaders running through the round, guess that‘s the extra motivation you have with the job to finish rule since you will still get payed 8 hours even if you have only worked 4 till your route was finished. Anyway, don‘t wanna wander of too much from the actual video my comment is about, just thought I might give you a little bit insight how it‘s done where I live. One thing I‘m still curious about is how Chelmsford handles flats and units. Do the flats also have four seperate recycling streams like the normal houses or is the recycling commingled? Also are the flats collected on a different day than the normal houses and if so, what trucks do they use for the flats collection. Sorry for all the questions. Hello, wow quite the comment. Thank you for the praise. The team I worked with are a good cohesive unit and a lot of silent communication and gestures occur so everyone knows what they're doing. Unfortunately with the ceaseless tide of construction and expansion the rounds are getting longer and the workers are getting stretched. As such some people give it up and move on. I believe there are 3, maybe 4 cardboard rounds running each day. A similar number of glass/tin, paper and plastic lorries also. Don't quote me on that, I haven't gone round counting. Flats and their refuse is separated into seperate bins within a small outbuilding or beneath the buildings themselves. 240l ones with a flap covered by metal do the glass, tins and food separately. Cardboard are normally 660l blue bins however 1100l have been seen on occasion. General waste can be multiple 240l, 360l, 660l, 1100l or Paladins depending on occupancy and the amount of units in a given location.

First I am hearing about any such thing. A good idea, I had numerous issues with people storming past in narrow spaces ornwith poor visibility. I don't see it being taken serious or enforced fully if it did come in. Look at mobile phone use in cars

Til just recently used to drive bin wagons on trade waste for local private company and also councils, and just live it when people know it’s bin day, yet they still park the cars either park cars directly opposite each other making it difficult to get through, or block the bins so u can’t access the bins and they Moan when the bins not been emptied, and also of course call you all the names under the sun, as it’s your fault there bin hasn’t been emptied cos u couldn’t access there bin safely

"It's everyone else's problem except mine" is the attitude I often come across. They very quickly change their tune when I tell them that their bin and the rest on the street are not getting done as a result. Many a driveway remain unused and yet cars are dumped outside the property blocking the pavement for pedestrians and sightlines/junction accessibility for road users. Recycling was done on split vehicles in Chelmsford. Glass & tins were loaded on side hoppers that raised up on the N/S and went into the vehicle via the roof. Paper & cardboard were loaded on split pack rear loaders. 60/40 split paper N/S chute and plastic got the majority share. Cardboard had their own vehicles from memory, conventional twin bin loading.

You get given a big envelope with each days work on it in big A3 map print out. The loaders are universally pretty good with route knowledgeable. They might not know the road names but they certainly where they are and where to go

The work itself is not bad. I don't what HGV 1 work you do however I safely say it'll likely alot more active and physical. It will certainly represent a drop in wages however you'll gain a lot of time for your disposal. It's relatively simple work however a lot of urban, densely clustered vehicle movements compare to the A-road/Motorway runs you do now.

@@matrowe6736 4 day week Tues-Fri 0630/1630 refuse 0700/1700 recycling 9.25 hours paid each day, job and finish so name of the game is to blast the work out and go home Might finish 1.5/2 hours early so _equivalent_ pounds per hour go up, i.e X amount of pounds for say, 32 hours work

If this is glass & tins, they use a 240l to seperate the 2 material types, although some loaders take the boxes straight to the side of the truck and sort it there

Thank you for watching No lids on bins so crews can keep emptying sacks of paper without lifting up and down. Although that can lead to it being blown about, lid lifting isn't a hardship so I cannot confirm why they chose to remove them.

Regarding my comment on video #15 This is the dual lifter system we use for everything, We use the same lorry (Each driver basically has "their own" lorry for their routes, and a spare for when they're getting serviced every 6 weeks or so) for general, paper and plastic, so the Perspex windows on the side of the hoppers are manky can't see nothing in them at all, Basically everybody has 3 different colour lid bin, A Black 240L for general, Blue 240Lfor paper & CB and a Red 240L for plastic & cans (We recycle cans etc with the plastic) Only real difference is in the cab, we have some added "in-cab" tech, a tablet type thing that's hardwired onto the dash where the middle vents are on a Ram Mount arm for reporting things, like bins not being out, contamination, access issues(road works basically) and a "ISS IDClear" brake locking system to stop the lorry from moving without a driver in the seat (RFID bracelet thing), If my weight comes off the seat and a door is opened it locks the brakes up, sometimes overly sensitive, even just moving in the seat repositioning can set it off and lock the system.

Yeah I follow your thread. Some of our vehicles had that sodding bracelet thing. We just took them off and tucked them into the dashboard. Also some vehicles had a belt loop coin type thing to be located near your left hip. Again, tucked into the seat. The tablet thing sounds a very good idea. We had to do A4 sheets of missed bin/side waste etc. Lots of wasted time

@@bengreenwood5442 Top rotary switch is for how many "bangs" each single bin gets 0/1/2/3, helps empty a stubborn bin The bottom rotary switch for how often the compactor runs. 0-2, 3-4 etc. Do you want it to compact with every lift, every second lift etc

@@wheelerd02 oh so basically if every bin was overflowing you may want it to compact it automatically every bin. But if they were all half full it would compact every couple of bins. That’s really clever actually.

@@bengreenwood5442 indeed it does offer that choice, however on cardboard given how much space it wastes in an uncompacted state it is best to do it every lift/2nd lift Hence why I often supplement the cycle with a green button press on the side of the vehicle, much like in my paper & plastics video

Do you have any tips on how to get hired as a bin man? Ever since i was born i always loved bin lorrys. A few years ago i thought up a really detailed composting company that i want to start in my late 20s but i need money for that so thought working as a bin man would be good. Do you have any tips on how to get a better chance of being hired?

I am of the opinion that it wouldn't be too difficult to get hired by a waste collection service. Due to high turn over (due to sudden and high doses of reality) I imagine most councils get agencies to supply them with staff. In my time, here and elsewhere, I have met many people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Be honest and sincere in your intentions and be healthy and willing to work and I can see no reason why you cannot find work. There are many avenues of employment, if you are still intent on starting your composting company the capital can be earnt anyplace. Putting bins on the back of the lorry doesn't equate to experience in its disposal and refinement or matters of running a business.

Becoming a Loader is fairly easy. The necessity to have loaders and drivers means that positions are always going to be readily available so honestly just enquire about it to whomever is responsible for handling the Waste in your local area and they will get back to you fairly sharpish. Their main criteria is that you are physically capable of doing it (and they will quickly find out if you are suited to it because wear and tear is very real in that line of work, you will be aching from repetition) and are able to communicate with members of the public and with a team.

I said we need 2 bins in the hopper and 3 bins on each lift before we leave the yard, everyone will have 2 bins plus 1 for me I had to get keys to shunt another vehicle, the bins were arranged in my absence When we arrived I found that the extra bin was not placed in the hopper

Merely a habit, let the engine rev up without driveline having to divert power for PTO. I imagine now, looking back, that the allison gearbox (and maybe others) have some means of disengaging drive whilst the PTO is in operation. It causes no harm to press the Neutral button nor does it save hours on work day leaving it in Drive whilst compacting.
