You are doing the world a great service. So many of us have never had exposure to these skills.

@Honeygooyumy69 Good question. First of all I'd say never go anywhere in woods like that without knowing exactly where you are on the map by pace count. From the time you get out of your vehicle to the time you get back you should be aware of where you are. but for a blind camp like you describe you can blaze four trails, one in each cardinal direction, from you camp. Like spokes on a wheel. That way you have four chances of hitting a blazed trail when coming back from the hunt.

Thanks, my friend. Glad to be of help. To be honest I don't worry about true north, it' usually within one to two degrees of grid north. One or two degrees doesn't matter much with general woods navigation. Plus the two tools you're using are the map (grid north) and the compass (magnetic north). If those two jive then you're good to go. Hope that makes sense. Iz

How does this work in a hunting situation when you can see no landmarks or anything to identify your position because you are in thick bush? ..say you have set up camp and you want to stalk a particular sector of land not known before accept through the view of a map ..you have left camp (but is unknown because you just walk in without taking any distance and bearings to that site) ...then left to go on your stalk and wanting to get back to base camp later ...how can that be done ...cheers

I just wanted to say thanks for the great video series. I am currently doing a private land nav course with a Army ret. Sgt that ironically we barter guitar lessons for nav lessons ( he was a instr.). your video affirm everything I'm being taught and the only thing I'm still not getting 100% is declination I understand the lars method but ie. if TN is 1d from GN and MN is 14 degrees from grid do I add them to get 15 deg declination or do I only count MN and only declinate 14 degrees? Thanks.

While plotting the orienting the map and plotting the points, would we adjust for magnetic declination between grid and magnetic north?

@Honeygooyumy69 part 2 answer. As for going out to the hunt spot, that's where your pace count from the time you left your vehicle (known point) will be your best guide. Flat, featureless terrain is without a doubt the most difficult to navigate in. Be careful and have fun, my friend. Iz

@cm2acres Ha. I rewatched the video, I gave you the wrong info in my last post. Sorry about that. Yes you would account for declination (plus or minus) when shooting the azimuth. I didn't there because declination here is only 1 degree. But if yours is greater then you need to factor that in. Iz

When you wrote 70 degrees and 15 degrees, is that where the North arrow was pointing or the index line? Thanks

@0Weaver0 I get mine from mytopo dot com. I'm not sure what you mean by "what type are they"?. Mine are 1:25000 scale if that's what you mean. But you can get a few different scales from them. Thanks for watching. Iz

Index line. Whatever your index line is over when looking through the magnifier that is your azimuth. Iz

Not bad... Safe to assume you were not a military instructor on this material. When you pace count, you only need to do a pace count once on a level surface. Forget about pace counting uphill and downhill. The level pace count will give you an approximate distance for your pace which will vary of course with uneven terrain. To pace count uphill and downhill is to say that you will be encountering the same angle of degrees for every uphill and downhill -impossible, especially since the good navigation does not require measuring the up and down angle of every segment of terrain that lies ahead. Bottom line: do one pace count on level terrain. That is your average pace count.

Yeah, its safe to assume that. haha. I even said as much in the first video when I said "I'm not an expert at land nav.".
