I love it when Alice hits Phil in the eye with her boa. You can see him visibly wince as he is in pain. Never stopped with that signature smile, though.

My parents introduced me to all this generation of stars. When I was little I never understood how Alice Faye could marry Phil Harris. After seeing the chemistry between them ; & how well they complemented one another, they were a great team. Now I can't imagine one without the other. Stars had such great Magic at this time, such CLASS ! Today it almost seems that having ' Class ' has become unpopular.

the leader man - the ragged meter man - never goes out of style ... and that song is 110 years old! Swanee River, "sampled" in the song, is 170 years old!! Yet everyone still knows them both.

Irving Berlin had said he preferred Alice Faye to sing his songs over anyone another female singer of that time and I have to agree.

Yes. Change any gesture or voice inflection, however slight, in Alice Faye's rendering of a song and it becomes less!

In her day, Alice Faye was as gorgeous as her contemporary Jean Harlow. But she could sing!

Charles Almon Yes, both were sexy. Harlow was the bigger star, but not exactly musically inclined.

A Krenwinkle Not to nitpick, I wouldn't say that Harlow was a bigger star. As a movie buff, its very easy to go back and check out the Quigley Polls. You will find out that both ladies were top ten box office draws. Faye was a box office gold mine.

Al Yerbury I'm a big film buff and Faye fan, but I'd have to say that the first year she made the Quigley poll was after Harlow died. It's hard to quantify something like "bigger star." It's not just a matter of who made the most money, but the place of the star in society, how people feel about the star, whether positive or even negative, or even think about the star. A good example is Mae West, whose film career was successful but brief. I would say she was a bigger star than many ladies who sold more tickets. June Allyson said, "I wasn't a big star. Hedy Lamarr was a big star." Yet June made Quigley; Hedy didn't. But I think June had it right.

A Krenwinkle Yes, Faye's movie career really moved upward after they changed her Harlow-like hair color and eye brows. From 1938 until she parted from Fox in 1945, she was a top star. You are so right, Mae West was a supernova, a rather short movie career, but a legend to be sure. There's the difference between West, Harlow, and Faye. Mae and Jean were known often in the papers for scandalous headlines, while Alice did nothing to warrant the constant controversy that kept those two stars in the publics eye.

As I was watching this, I was remembering how my family used to watch Hollywood Palace when I was a kid. And I started thinking, why can't I find this type variety show on TV now. But I thought -- if they did try to put a show like this on, who is today's equivalent to Bing Crosby? And who is today's equivalent Hollywood couple to Phil and Alice? Have we lost these types of entertainers completely? Or am I missing something?

Alice Faye was the Queen singer of all the musical that were made in the 1930's and most of the 1940's until Betty Grabel came along.

what I read was that the studio was pushing Grable as the next star....when the studio was preparing a new musical, it asked Alice Faye to AUDITION....quite the insult. So, she decided to call it a day. Some time later, after the studio received a lot of mail asking when Faye was going to be in a new movie, the studio asked her to come back and along with their invitation they sent her a nice new car....which she promptly returned to them...she as all class.

Another detail: On the Faye/Harris radio show in late 40s/50s the end credits will say "Alice Faye appears courtesy of 20th Century Fox"? That was a little joke toward the studio after she left them.

Bing and Phil were in Scotland to play golf. One night they pasted a distillery that was all lit up. Bing said to Phil, "See they are making it faster than you can drink it." Phil replied, "Yeah, but I got them working overtime!"

I worked as a nurse at the beauty resort in Phoenix owned by Elizabeth Arden. It was called maine 🎉chance. Alice, Faye and her daughter, Phyllis and Alice would come twice a year for a week. She was the most down to earth, beautiful woman and so kind to everyone at the spa. I really loved her.
