Biniam Girmay entre dans l'histoire en remportant Gand-Wevelgem

C'est une grande première dans l'histoire du cyclisme. L'Érythréen Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), 21 ans, a remporté dimanche la classique Gand-Wevelgem, en Belgique. Il devient le premier coureur d'un pays d'Afrique subsaharienne à s'imposer sur une classique flandrienne. C'est aussi la première victoire pour la formation belge Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux sur une épreuve du World Tour. Girmay s'est imposé au sprint dans un groupe de quatre coureurs, devant le Français Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) et Dries Van Gestel (TotalEnergies).
