I been using a similar method, I also been getting good results and a clean burn. I get good quality biochar and charcoal.

Hi Tom, thanks for the great video. This double barrel retort is also the retort I have had the best results with. One thing I havent tried yet, but can see that you are almost ready to try, is to put materiel in the outer protection ring. Merry chrismas. Kind regards Anders Jensen Denmark (Europe)

good idea. it will have to be sealed, at least at the top, to keep it oxygen poor. please let us know how it works.

good video, thanks. I put my char through a mulcher/chipper - it must be moist though to prevent a lot of dust. Can be put through a second or third time to get it smaller - much easier than trying to pound it up manually, cheers

yeah, Anders, it took a while to get the sizes of the holes and stove pipe right. now finally smokeless. remember, for your idea of making char in the outer ring, it will need to be airtight, with a few holes at the bottom inside for gas escapement. sounds intriguing, but also a lot of work, unless you are a great metal worker with extra time. glad you are making char. have you been making it in a wood stove also? see the other video: Mini double retort: mini double retort merry christmas! t

Best video on the subject I've seen. I hope you start making videos again. Are you in CA or OR?

the video was made in the Eureka neighborhood about 4 years ago. unfortunately i am doing a city gig now. can't wait to get back to the country and make more char. thanks for the compliment. fire away!

Tom Reed Oh cool. 2 other people and myself just bought a house in McKinleyville. I have a little bit of space and really want to build one of these. I've seen another kind where the burn chamber goes up the center and is stove pipe sized. Then, the outside of the whole barrel is wrapped with rock wool. That design could be more efficient but your design probably seals up easier and is more simple and better thought out. Do you have any ways you would improve it?
@tomreedbiochar8 жыл бұрын
the good thing about this is how low tech it is, but it works. it just wastes a lot of heat. it would be nice to capture the heat. you could run coiled pipe around it or the stove pipe and run the water into a thermal mass under a house--or something like that.

Awesome video. One question though, what happens if one replaces the woods inside the smaller barrel with circuit boards? Does this system turn that into charcoal without smoke? This can solve a lot of ewaste problems.

@tomreedbiochar5 жыл бұрын
its 2 barrels.
@stuffbywoody54975 жыл бұрын
@@tomreedbiochar , that doesn't make it a double retort. Retort is the action. The action is happening once. Therefore it is a single retort, not a double.

I think you're loosing heat through upper diamond shape holes. You might get better results without them.

Can't get any better that good char. the top holes allow oxygen to completely burn all gasses escaping the stack and eliminate all smoke--a priority for me.
