The UK Government has announced that development sites in England will now be legally required to demonstrate a 10% biodiversity net gain, as of 2021.
This means that for environmental destruction or displacement, the developer must replace with a further gain to biodiversity on or close to the development site. This is part of the Government’s plan for net-zero emissions by 2050, by ensuring growth in the country’s biodiversity.
To make this a practical measure for developers, the creation of Biodiversity Credits has come into being. These credits can be bought by a developer for a landowner who will then take on the onus of ensuring the correct replanting and biodiversity growth is carried out to offset the development.
