Cyanobacteria can form symbiotic relationships with a wide range of hosts, including plants, fungi, sponges, and protists. For example, Anabaena is a symbiont of the aquatic fern Azolla and can provide biofertilizer to rice plantations. Some cyanobacteria are free-living and fix nitrogen.
