I was watching the film “The Last Samurai” and I was interested in a possible (perhaps prehistory) physical link between the Zen and Folk philosophies, linguistics, and warrior traditions of the native-american tribes and ancient Japan. Perhaps they have some common ancestry that affected their world view before Western expansion.

As an African child raised in various African countries, I can assure you Simon that the stories of Mansa Sundjata Keïta and Mansa Musa endure to this day. We read about them, sing of them, are taught about them, watched cartoons, dramas and plays about them. You should really do a Biographics on the Epic of Sundjata. He was extraordinary even before birth, or so the legend goes.

Tells us about the accounts of mansa Musa that actually come from his own people/contemporary sources, if they exist. When you look carefully, nothing about the mansa Musa stories add up. Even the famous image attributed to be mansa musa holding a gold coin is the image of a Christian king.

@CaptTerrific

@@patricklemire9278 This is why you'll always be middle class - your appreciation, understanding, and desire for a comfortable life with all of our modern wonders is hindering you. True wealth is the ability to CRUSH YOUR ENEMIES! GRIND THEIR BONES INTO DIRT!! MAKE THEM REGRET THEY WERE EVER BORN!!! It's about having more than others - and not how much you actually have in absolute terms, but how much more you have in a relative sense! What's the value of jet travel if you have to sit in coach? What's the value of air conditioning when everyone can enjoy it, vs. being the only person in your entire continent who can afford to have ice transported to them? Of course, I share your philosophy... which is why I'll also never be a billionaire either :D

Everything started in Africa.... mathematics , science and astrology that we know today , it's thanks to these black people from Africa! Europeans came to Africa without any knowledge, they learned from the Africans and when they returned to Europe, they portrayed Africans as animals ... many European scientist( so called scientist), went to Africa for a while and when they returned to Europe , suddenly they are claiming to be intelligent 😁.... Phytagoras, Plato , Einstein, Tesla , Darwin , Archimedes, Newton and many more .... all of them have either went to Africa( iraq, egypt etc...) to learn what they know! This proves that they didn't discover or invented anything, they just copied what the Africans knew and changed the name of these things( that's the only thing they did,name changing) ..... If we really want to know REAL SCIENCE AND REAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE EARTH AND THE UNIVERSE, we should learn about ancient Africans way of life and way of seeing things!

@@mattkeita3448 Transatlantic slave trade had the majority of slaves provided by Africans. African colonisation didn’t start until the 1880s which by then slavery was outlawed by the major powers on the Atlantic. @@gostavoadolfos2023 that's was very understanable from what you wrote. Some simple answers could be that the resources from the coast properly weren't sufficient. Technology, africans have been mining since "pre historic" times, so it may have been a preference/familiarity to mining, that could have been the reason. At some points the emperors also owned some of the salt mines in Northern West Africa. So the trade could have been for diplomatic reasons. Since the relationship between the manding and berbers have been very volitile throughout history. Like ancient raid of manding settlements, and the almohavids and marrocan attacks on Ghana and Songhai.

When you are so damned rich a personal retail therapy trip triggers hyperinflation (because you have a significant % of all printed money so the Fed prints more so others can have some, which backfires after the tidal wave of cash you've held back is released), causes a global recession, and makes the Federal Reserve reduce interest rates to 0% for the next 10 years as a result. Probably a multi-trillionaire could do it if they wanted to play an expensive practical joke on the world and had a sick sense of humor (likely, you have to be a psychopath to be CEO).

@@ilarious5729 Yes, every Fortune 500 CEO is in fact a psychopath. It's a required trait, because if you are not then someone that is will do whatever is necessary, morals and ethics (and even the law if it can't be proven) be damned, and take the position in your place if all other skills are equal. Such is life at the top of the pyramid. @Dj_M1 I think OP means that African history itself is important, not this one small (and you're dead right, unimportant and easily disputed) aspect of it. Aside from the benefits to Africans living there today to be able to chart their own pre-colonial history. For a lot of people of African descent, who's link to their lineage and history were lost when they were sold and scattered, it's arguably very important to know that they even have a history beyond that of slavery. Let alone how grand a history that is. I think it's fairly important to those of us raised in the Western cultures too. For those who've grown up only knowing Africa as an impoverished continent, it's important to understand what attracted the invaders there in the first place. Else people continue believing the 'we went to bring them to God and clothe them decently, purely as an act of kindness' propaganda. We went to take what they had, much of Europe's inherited wealth has its beginnings in the organised gang-rape of Africa.

However, given one of the simplest ways to do such a comparison is simply to compare how much of total world wealth was controlled by a single person at that point in time, Musa is believed to be #1. Arguably, given improvements in productivity, how much you get per dollar, and the wonders of modern technology, Bezos (or Putin or one of those others speculated to be wealthier) is the richest person to ever live. Mansa Kankan Musa - The Richest African Warrior Musa I was the tenth Mansa (sultan or king) of Mali. His reign was between 1312 and 1337 AD. He was an extremely powerful leader and under his leadership Mali was able to conquer 24 cities. He had a great deal of nick names and titles, including the ‘Lion of Mali’ and ‘Conqueror of Ghanata’. One of his nicknames, ‘Lord of the Mines of Wangara’, was due to the fact he was in control of all the gold mines there. This contributed to the fact he was exceptionally rich - his contemporaries described him as “inconceivably wealthy”. Both Time and the BBC have commented on his wealth from a modern view point, with the latter declaring him THE RICHEST MAN OF ALL TIME This European is babbling false notions

@General Grievous ehhh. There's a lot of issues with calling Jakob Fugger the richest man ever. The was done by estimating the value of his entire business, which in reality he only owned a decent amount of it with his brothers and children owning the rest of it. The article claiming so did it for clickbait to highlight an extremely influential, but largely anonymous person in the early modern period of Europe.

Massive empire. Greatest nation. Richest. Weird how they usually hate teaching us about people like these in schools and stuff lol I wonder why

I further read that his spending in Cairo was on stalls and goods that were in many cases owned by a rich Florentine family called the Medici, who used that gold to finance what we call 'the renaissance'.

Thanks Simon ! I love hearing stories like this. Its so depressing that as an African the only history I was ever taught was about Europe and what happened to my country after Europeans arrived 😒

😊 Dr. Ivan Sertima has already verified through numerous articles of research that Musi's brother who sailed was indeed successful in reaching his destination. Read "They Came Before Columbus." Those types of attitudes towards African scholars must be ceased.

Awesome video Simon. A biography of an African leader that wasn't of a notorious character. Please consider making more videos of African heroes. Great leaders, revolutionaries etc. 👐👐👐

Hey Simon Whistler, thank you so much for this video. Mansa Musa represents so much for African history and the incident he was involved in Egypt is a slap on the face of general stereotypes on Africans. Thank you so much for unveiling the history of my people.

I wonder if the Prince Ali segment in Disney's Aladdin is based on Mansa Musa, where the Genie is bragging about how Prince Ali has got 95 golden camels and 53 purple peacocks and stuff. It's the kind of insane wealth that feels almost mythical.
