When I was nine years old, my grandmother took me on a three week trip to Europe. Remember the 60's? Our first stop was Amsterdam, and one of the first items on our itinerary was a visit to The Riijksmuseum to see The Nightwatch. It was quite large, that's what I remember, but at that age I didn't truly appreciate the moment. Looking back now I am glad I had the experience, thanks for the memory.

As an artist and future curator, I applaud for finally telling a more accurate account then the story about the Night Watch ruining his career, as every art teacher I had told this story. It is hard to correct it in our minds. We can compare it to once believing the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree. But it was really the invention of one of his biographers. We can easily believe the sensational lie than the boring truth.

The point of _The Painter in His Studio_ is the fact that he stands and observes his work-in-progress from a distance, when most painters sat at the easel. Notice the wear on the rung of the easel, the result of decades feet resting on it.

I've always thought that the true greats of art must be the opposite of someone like me who has ADHD. To apply paint to feathers like that, to concentrate on the piece for so long and not get distracted. It's totally beyond me.
@grown.ass.nerd.3 жыл бұрын
Or maybe it is ADHD that made them hyperfocus on what they were doing.
@itarry43 жыл бұрын
@@grown.ass.nerd. ADHD doesn't work like that from everything I know about it, as a sufferer from a time before every kid who's a bit over active gets the title I've always had an interest in it and needed to find a way to help me stay focused, it took years back then to get diagnosed. We do hyper focus at times but it never ever lasts long before we wander again, they'd have to keep stopping and returning which would really harm their flow. The hyper focus, good memory, thing is a big part of how I cope, I just have to have non important subjects to distract my mind when it wanderers then go back again. Bit more to it obviously but that's the basics. They might well have something similar but different in the way it makes you stay hyper focused rather than not being able to focus for more than a few minutes though, that's definitely possible I'd say. The slightly long answers is also a bit of a thing I have.. 🤔 😉 😅

@@grown.ass.nerd. My mother started painting at 50. She had been losing her hearing for decades, was feeling isolated, so my father bought her a starter kit for Christmas. She painted every second she could. Started off with oils. She would have 2 or 3 going at the same time, and a hairdryer going to dry her work, so she could get back to painting as soon as possible. It made her really happy.

@@itarry4 I have to disagree based on my own experience. I have ADD, and I hyper focus on things more than going from one thing to another. If I'm interested in something I'll research it to the point of exhaustion, and have a hard time getting anything else done until I do eventually lose interest

Here are some suggestions for another video - all interesting people though the first two are lesser known. April Ellison/William Ellison Jr. (1790-1861) - a freed slave from South Carolina who became a successful slaveowner and planter himself before the civil war. Anthony Johnson (1600-1670) - a former indentured servant who became one of the first African American property owners in America and a successful tobacco farmer. Lord Mountbatten (1900-1979) - Prince Philip’s uncle and Queen Elizabeth’s second cousin once removed who was assassinated by the IRA Yukio Mishima (1925-1970) - Japanese poet, author, playwright, actor and nationalist who committed seppuku after a failed attempt to overthrow Japan’s 1947 constitution. Robert Walpole (1676-1745) - British politician who was the first prime minister of Great Britain from 1721 until 1742 under King George I and King George II. Eamon DeValera (1882-1975) - prominent political leader in 20th century Ireland who, after the Irish war of independence from 1919 to 1921, was in the public eye for over forty years from 1922 until his death were he served as head of government (Taoiseach/prime minister) and head of state (president). He was nearly executed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was key in putting into place the new constitution on 1937. A very prominent Irish figure and one of the most important in Irish history. George Eastman (1854-1932) - American entrepreneur who founded the Eastman Kodak company. He was a pioneer of photography and a major philanthropist. He commit suicide at the age of 77 because of chronic pain from health problems. Emile Zola (1840-1902) - French novelist and journalist who is an early practitioner in the literary genre, naturalism. He was involved in the Dreyfus affair, a political scandal in France. He died in 1902 at the age of 62 from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. ryoichi sasakawa (1899-1995) - Japanese businessman, politician, sports administrator, philanthropist and was criminal who helped Norman Borlaug with his Green Revolution. Seamus Heaney (1939-2013) - Irish poet, playwright and translator who won the 1995 Nobel prize for literature and wrote a poem about The Tollund Man comparing his cause of death to The Troubles in Northern Ireland. W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) - Irish poet, dramatist and writer with an interest in the occult who helped found the Abbey Theatre and was a senator for the Irish Free State. He is one of the most important historical figures in Irish history. Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021) - husband and consort to Queen Elizabeth who served in the navy as a young man, serving in the Second World War. He died recently so it would be a good choice. Jordan Belfort (born 1962) - former stockbroker, author, motivational speaker and convicted felon who committed fraud via stock market manipulation. His book was the inspiration behind the film The Wolf of Wall Street starring Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013. Past American presidents, British prime ministers, monarchs and Roman emperors would be good as well.
