He was Tibetan by origin since Tibetan have no viable documents and refugee status. Tenzin Norgay clearly stated in 1985 interview in tibetan language. But he choose Nepali citizen first but nehru was smart and told him he will grant him Indian citizenship but Norgay is the man of integrity and doesn't want controversy. And never spoke about these sensitive issues. He married to two Sherpa women. We are proud what he achieved 👏. We don't care who ever he belongs to but he conquered mighty height

@Sabina Subedi Sherpas are ethnic Tibetans who moved to this region some 500 years ago and certainly not refugees. The very word Sherpa is a Tibetan (People from the east) Shar = East. Both India and Nepal bitterly contested the citizenship of Tenzin soon after the conquest of Everest in 1953. Tibet didn't claim as Tibet was in the turmoil as the Chinese had invaded and occupied Tibet in 1950. But Tenzin's parents are both Tibetan who moved to Khumbu Nepal.
