1. Could you please share your journey as a plant scientist with our viewers.
2. According to you, which sectors of Plant Science Research will prosper in the near future?
3. For CRISPR vector transformation PTC techniques like - protoplast culture, anther-culture, cell suspension culture are regaining high demand. What are your thoughts on this?
4. What is your opinion on GM crops commercialization in Bangladesh?
5. What is your opinion on the CRISPR genome editing tool? Do you consider CRISPR-ed crops to be GM crops?
6. If someone wants to start a Plant Tissue Culture Company, which plants would you consider to be useful for this purpose?
7. In Plant tissue culture, contamination is a problem and sometimes very frustrating. What would your advice be to the students who may be facing this kind of contamination-related problems?
8. You are a reviewer for many renowned journals and editor of books. Can you give us some key takeaway messages to improve manuscripts?
9. When you recruit a research fellow what qualities do you look for other than academic qualities?
10. What would your words of advice be to the students and scholars who are new to the field of plant science research?
Profesor Dr. Rakha Hari Sarker: Short Profile
Professor Dr. Rakha Hari Sarker has been involved in teaching and research at the Department of Botany, University of Dhaka since 1982.
Education and Experience: He obtained his M.Sc. from the Department of Botany, University of Rajshahi and Ph.D. from the University of Reading. UK. He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship for his Ph.D. Apart from this Ph. D. program he has received various post-doctoral and advanced training in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology, Plant Genetic Engineering and Biosafety from Germany, CIMMYT (Mexico), International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, India and Cornel University, USA.
Award: Professor Sarker has received Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award, the highest state award given by the Government of Bangladesh in 2018 for his contribution on research in Agricultural Sciences.
Research interest: His field of specialization is Plant Breeding and Biotechnology. He has variety of research interests for the improvement of crop plants using modern breeding techniques and biotechnology. He is also interested in propagation and characterization of medicinal plants as well as indigenous plants of economic and environmental importance.
Publications: He has published more than 100 research articles in several national and international journals including Proceedings of the National Academy Science (PNAS), USA; Current Plant Biology, New Phytologists; Euphytica; Cytologia; SABRAO Journal; Phytomorphology; Plant Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture; Journal of Phytopathology; In vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology-Plant and Indian Journal of Agricultural Science. He is co-author of four books published by international publishers. He is author of a book called “Wealth of Bangladesh: Medicinal Plants” published National Museum of Science and Technology, Bangladesh.
He has so far supervised more than fifty students in the field of Plant Breeding, Tissue Culture and Plant biotechnology. Eight Ph. D. Research Fellow and two M. Phil students have obtained their degrees under his supervision. He has also supervised one post-doctoral fellow.
He is serving as Executive Editor of Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology Journal (PTC&B) and one of the editors of Bangladesh Journal of Botany (BJB) and Bangladesh Journal of Scientific Research (BJSR).
Current Duties/Involvement: He is serving as the Director of Dhaka University Centre for Advanced Studies and Research in Biological Sciences. He is also the Chairperson of Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) of University of Dhaka.
He is a scientist member of the National Executive Committee on Biotechnology (NECB) of Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and member of the Core Committee of the National Technical Committee of Crop Biotechnology (NTCCB) of Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (Under the Ministry of Agriculture).
Research Grants: He has received Research Grants from US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS-USDA), Ministries of Education, Science and Technology, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
He has participated in several International Conferences and Seminars and has organized several International Conferences on Botany, Plant Tissue Culture and Biotechnology in Dhaka. He is the National Coach of Bangladesh Biology Olympiad and Jury member of International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
