The renowned psychologist and author dispels the fog of duality and polarization that enshrouds our society, such as under-thinking while over-working, or preaching democracy while failing to vote. Paradoxically, knowing what’s wrong with our nation is what paralyzes us. We play the mind game of opposites - red or blue states, religion or science, winning or losing - and fail to find a third way. Searching out the meaning of the symptom might release us from this stalemate. On-the-ground community building, voting and governing the government, Hillman believes, could help us reclaim an Earth-based culture and more decentralized society from our stalemated, empire-building nation.
This speech was given at the 2006 Bioneers National Conference.
Since 1990, Bioneers has acted as a fertile hub of social and scientific innovators with practical and visionary solutions for the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
To experience talks like this, please join us at the Bioneers National Conference each October, and regional Bioneers Resilient Community Network gatherings held nationwide throughout the year.

Simply outstanding... SIMPLY MERAVIGLIOSO!!!! How much wisdom, how much common sense, how much purity of thoughts, how much Junghian phylosophy, HOW MUCH SOUL...ANIMA... in such a humble Mind! If only our dirty politicians had a glimpse of what you are talking about, what a better world we would all live in!! James Hillman... you are a real Angel! I LOVE YOU! (Mario Italy)

Isn't advocating for passivity some kind of fundamental contradiction?

Passivity isn't the prescription. It's the descriptive account of what is happening. Look to the city (and the local citizenry) for it's passivity; notice what happens in spite of their "passivity"

More people are soul less now and to smart phoned up to realize anything important than their own pathetic needs and worthless desires.

James Hillman is someone I admire very much and in less than 30 minutes he's presented us with all the archetypal signposts that only begin to hint at the length and breadth and DEPTH of where his writing and other talks have provided us the detail. Our politicians are failing us when they fall to polarizing positions of opposite entrenchment. it is as though they are incapable of holding the tension of opposites and finding nuance - only digging their lines of entrenchment and throwing stones at one another (the militaristic, divisive, splitting speech of personal ego) and calling it debate. Here Hillman at the very least alerts us to what we fall unconsciously into maintaining (in 25+ minutes!!!). But it's easy to attack and dismiss (especially when threatened or the ideas are alien). Thinking takes effort and an inner or outer revolution.

tom tom, you are doing exactly what Hillman points out is bogus to do...why attack Robert?...Hillman is giving his 'view' , his 'take on things'...i can respond to what i think of Hillman's comments which i think are great articulated solutions for cultural and personal opposites and divisiveness...why create 'divisiveness' with Robert?...why attack Robert and 'name call'...i , too , disagree with Robert but attacking him shows i'm uneducated , immature and going against what Hillman points out we can use to heal...TomTom, you are just being mean cutting up another person...a person you don't know...disagree without being disagreeable...tomtom, you are just showing you have your head up your ass when you attack personally...like i just did....tee hee

John Smith Isn't totom521 giving our friend Robert exactly what he came here for? A trolling comment like the OP only exists to provoke an annoyed reaction, which totom521 was considerate enough to provide - and true to the style established by the OP they did it aggressively and in bad taste, with nothing to contribute. Seems like a beautiful match to me.

Hillman was not genuinely connected to the psyche. Although clever and laugh-getting, his words are ephemeral and insubstantial; they will fade quickly.
