I thought it was one of those giant ruined portals at first, because I've found one of those underground too, but nope. It was a full-ass stronghold. Something a lot of people don’t know is that the nether portal requires fire, not a flint and steel. Wood burns so the fire is in nether portal which burns it therefore by putting wood next to fire it burns and u get lit nether portal.
