020 - Biotic and Abiotic Factors
Paul Andersen differentiates between biotic and abiotic factors. He explains how both abiotic and biotic factors can affect organisms at the level of the cell, the population and even the ecosystem. The complexities of biofilms, predator-prey relationships, and food webs are given as illustrative examples.

We have been watching these videos in a Finnish upper secondary school on two biology courses which we're able to take in English. The videos have helped a lot not just with learning about the different aspects of biology but also with the learning of the different biological concepts (in English) and how to use them to explain these things in English. Thank you for these videos!

Our class teacher referred us to this video in our lesson to make notes, and I'm not complaining. This is a great video and covers everything I need to know in a great deal of depth, especially since I am a triple science student, this really has helped me. Please keep doing what you're doing; it does have an affect on us and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Thank you for this!! So... How do we alter the biofilm scenarios, say in one's mouth? I know some folks who cannot figure out their sinusitis situation!!! I'd love to be able to share - specifically something natural! Though, I'll figure out the natural if you tell me how to affect the biofilm...

why did the elk population go up if wolves are feeding off of them?

Amir Alamara I think it'd likely be a combo of multiple things. - As lotus said previously, it seems possible that the elk reproduced more to counter the increased mortality from predation. - they likely decreased in number at first, then once natural selection allowed those that had traits better suited for an environment with predators to start increasing in frequency by reproducing successfully, the elk population increased until the wolves adapted to counter the elks' traits. Examples: better antlers or hooves to defend with, faster metabolism, legs a better length to flee; a lack of evolutionary pressure from predation meant that, once predation DID start anew, some of the traits present would be detrimental to survival and selected out, so the population would (mostly) expand from the now-fit traits. - as mentioned above, there was likely a decline in elk population at first. This would have allowed the previously-dwindling populations of the elks' food to recover, and the elk population would increase again as its food sources did. Hope this was insightful! - gryphongirl

Since the wolf population decreased, the elk population increased. It seems that he messed up on his wording.

This video is inaccurate when describing the main diet of Gray Wolves and contributing to the spread of misinformation, which in turn leads to an imbalance in ecosystems. The main diet of Gray Wolves is in fact, not cattle, but their natural food source, elk, among other mammals. By suggesting that Gray Wolves feed mainly on cattle you are emboldening individuals to kill wolves when wolves are desperately needed in our ecosystems. The reality is that wolves have a minimal impact on the cattle industry, but the industry continues to insist otherwise despite evidence to the contrary. If you are going to make videos, please try to ensure they are factually correct.
