Thank you! Another helpful update. For the commenters: If anyone is wondering why the main symptom in humans is conjunctivitis (eye infection), it's because human eyeballs are the only body part that have the alpha 2 3 sialic acid receptor, which is the "lock" that the bird flu virus "key" fits into in humans. Cows and birds and other animals have more of these "locks." The good news is that it's hard to spread disease from human eyeball to human eyeball... most people don't touch eyeballs with other folks. But if this thing mutates and becomes able to infect the respiratory tract, it could be a really bad time considering the traditionally high mortality rate. (The virologists at MicrobeTV (especially in their video "TWiV 1116") has more info about this, if anyone's interested in learning.)

There is no systematic surveillance testing. I think we should refrain from saying that there has been no human to human transmission. We can say there has been no human to human transmission that we know of. There may very well have been more cases, and there are anecdotal accounts indicating that there has been, but there has been no testing. The people who lived with the first patient were not tested or observed. The farm was not identified. I don't know if there has been contact tracing and testing in this last case but testing is completely voluntary.

A few questions:- The the US. 1) Is reporting of this disease in cattle mandated? 2) Is this a state or federal requirement? 3) If this virus is detected, are the cattle isolated or culled? 4) Is compensation available to the owners of these cattle? 5) Are there penalties if the owners do not comply with the regulations? 6) Can inspectors visit the farms and take samples, even if the owners object? If the answer to any of these question is no, we have a problem.

Good update, but you did not mention the fact that in the first the first Michigan case, the virus has a mutation. I wonder if the most recent case or 3rd case from cows has another mutation. I have a question, does the H5N1 virus have to recombine with a human influenza A virus in order to be able to spread human to human, or can it just mutate on its own and be able to transmit between humans?

Thanks for the questions and comments! The third case hasn’t been fully sequenced yet, as far as we are aware, but will make sure to cover it once it is sequenced! And in theory it would not have to recombine with a human influenza virus to be able to spread human to human. Mutations alone could do it. Although recombining would most likely be a “quicker” way to be more transmissible

For the past 2 weeks I’ve found numerous dead birds and a few squirrels at my apartment complex. The residents are blaming cats but I don’t think so.
