BIRD NAMES CHANGED DUE TO RACISM OR WOKEISM??

This announcement, made on November 1, 2023, outlines the AOS's plan to revise the names of all bird species in its area that are presently named after individuals. Motivated by a commitment to correct historical missteps and enhance participation in bird-related activities, conservation, and research, the society will embark on a project to retitle about 70 to 80 bird species. This initiative, slated to start in 2024, aims to eliminate eponymous bird names - those that bear the names of people - and will primarily affect species located in the United States and Canada.

Seems kind of unnecessary, but even then it's not that serious. People are just using this to fight their ideological battles. I don't think birders or people who deeply care about birds would care about it either way, esp. in a world where we're driving so many birds to extinction. I think that's a bigger issue.

If it was for no other reason but to make the names more descriptive, I'd support it. Phasing out the names of racists so no one has to hear the name of someone who harmed their family or group in the past is just icing on top, whether that's the main reason or not. Also if it means we get more silly or ridiculous names, its even better. Love a good tit or boney-eared assfish (not a bird but still)
