Thanks Morten. “It’s not about equipment, its about the photos”, absolutely. I have always used Canon, (80D and R5 and before that several SLRs) but I felt curiously uncomfortable watching you away from your Nikon. But, as you say, it doesn’t really matter, its about the photos. Stay with this, it is your magic and for people like me what you do is just so inspiring. Equipment isn’t.

The photos are wonderful, I especially love the one of the bird looking up at 13:09! Glad to see you enjoying the Canon gear, several YT channels I watch just started using the R5 and they all seem to be enjoying it too. Have fun out there!

I love watching your videos, landscape is similar to where I live, but I have snakes and alligators to contend with! When I first moved here I didn't think there where that many alligators, but after going out in the woods and swamps they are everywhere! Not afraid of them, but you have to be smart about it! I see you switched to Canon! You must of been really impressed to switch! I'm a Panasonic kind of guy! Thanks for sharing your awesome work!

Great video Morten as always and very interesting to see all the comments on how positive people are with the R5/6! Seems like quite the game changer to me. Although I’ll still with the DX2 for a bit longer I think but I imagine it won’t be long before I switch:-) amazing to see the ID focus tracking work so well on a dark bird in a reduced lighting situation! You’ve had an awesome year and brought a lot of joy to many including me! Keep them coming my friend 🙏👍. Regards Richard

You don't need a super expensive camera to take beautiful photos, second hand fixed lens super zoom cameras are very cheap and they don't limit your creativity or photo opportunities, only at what ISO/Mpx you can shoot, which doesn't affect how beautiful a photo is. Go out there and have fun!

Perhaps Canon can loan you the RF 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11? Considering how much telephoto work you do those would be really interesting lenses to see being used in the field capturing wildlife.
@baredesigns1
@baredesigns1 4 жыл бұрын
I tried out the R5 with the Canon 600mm F/11. Body is superb (am a Nikon shooter for decades now). Lens is not really useful for wildlife. It is the F11 that makes it so unsuitable. Unless you are shooting in really bright light, AF is unusable. Big problem is the deep DOF. So subject isolation is poor. AF speed was quite good, in bright light. Pros: Lightweight, cheap and compact (when locked). Good optics. Cons: F/11 fixed aperture. AF point selection is limited to center area on a R5. Messes up compositional freedom

Im a r5 user, you mentioned the reliability of the eye af. I can tell you is struggled a bit in the beginning but now im used to it. Because i dont want to miss any shots if the eye af fails, i have set up TWO AF on Buttons on the back of the Camera. The „Common“ AF button uses the last set AF configuration, just like any other camera. The second Button (right next to the AF on with the little *) always uses Animal Eye AF. So my thumb only needs to move a tiny bit to either use the normal (Last used) AF method or the Animal Eye AF. This way its very fast and you get your shots more reliably.
@MortenHilmer

Thanks a lot for sharing this tip. Actually I have done something similar in case of missing the subject with eye tracking. Another thing is that it is not possible to zoom in to make manual focus when in eye af mode.

Yes mate dont be afraid of saying it. With wildlife photography gear matters. People who say it doesn't matter for all photography are just not using their brains. Stuff like portraiture is much less gear dependant on gear, for sure. You dont have to have fantastic gear to get a fantastic photo, but this isn't the same thing as a blanket statement that gear doesn't matter. I have the exact same outfit as he's using here, and it feels like cheating its that good.

Dippers are tricky. I usually have the best result when I sit still in one spot and wait. Perhaps those Danske dippers are different. With regards to the R5, I consider it to be a game changer. I'm far from a gear head but I must say that eye AF is unreal. Not perfect but a significant step ahead of the AF in my 5D IV and 1Dx II. And the large sensor does yield quite a bit of latitude with regards to cropping. Having said that, the skill of the photographer matters more than anything else IMO. Love the content Morten. Keep it coming. Hilsen fra en Dansker i Canada.

Seeing you crawl up that infamous tree with all that new gear made my heart skip a beat. Not sure if I would have given it another try after that last encounter. Anyway, glad you did, as allways great pictures! One tip I found really useful with my R6: I configured the "normal" AF-ON button to do "normal" Single Point Back Button AF and the "*" Button to do Eye-Detect AF, so you can switch between these two modes within a blink of an eye, depending on the situation. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mr Hilmer, Always loved your videos. I recently switched from my Nikon to Canon R5 and also tried the 200-400 1.4X. It was dream lens since 2013! I just feel the built in TC is not as good as I expected when taking stills, since I already got used to my Sigma 500mm f/4. I can't justify the weight-performance balance of this lens for bird photography, since I walked a lot. Now I'm using the rf 100-500, amazing lens, great IQ for the size and weight, and great IS for videos.

Thanks for all the information and entertainment throughout the year. I learned a lot and am hoping to learn more in 2021. As for switching to Canon - if it gives you better results then go for it, although it can be costly switching systems.. Time will tell, but let us know - I quite like the changing the focus point with the thumb. Happy New Year!
