You don't need a super expensive camera to take beautiful photos, second hand fixed lens super zoom cameras are very cheap and they don't limit your creativity or photo opportunities, only at what ISO/Mpx you can shoot, which doesn't affect how beautiful a photo is. Go out there and have fun!

Perhaps Canon can loan you the RF 600mm f/11 and 800mm f/11? Considering how much telephoto work you do those would be really interesting lenses to see being used in the field capturing wildlife.
@baredesigns14 жыл бұрын
I tried out the R5 with the Canon 600mm F/11. Body is superb (am a Nikon shooter for decades now). Lens is not really useful for wildlife. It is the F11 that makes it so unsuitable. Unless you are shooting in really bright light, AF is unusable. Big problem is the deep DOF. So subject isolation is poor. AF speed was quite good, in bright light. Pros: Lightweight, cheap and compact (when locked). Good optics. Cons: F/11 fixed aperture. AF point selection is limited to center area on a R5. Messes up compositional freedom

Im a r5 user, you mentioned the reliability of the eye af. I can tell you is struggled a bit in the beginning but now im used to it. Because i dont want to miss any shots if the eye af fails, i have set up TWO AF on Buttons on the back of the Camera. The „Common“ AF button uses the last set AF configuration, just like any other camera. The second Button (right next to the AF on with the little *) always uses Animal Eye AF. So my thumb only needs to move a tiny bit to either use the normal (Last used) AF method or the Animal Eye AF. This way its very fast and you get your shots more reliably.
@MortenHilmer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for sharing this tip. Actually I have done something similar in case of missing the subject with eye tracking. Another thing is that it is not possible to zoom in to make manual focus when in eye af mode.

@@MortenHilmer My stills setup is basically same setup as some others are doing like i.e. Fabian Fopp kzbin.info or Chris Kaula kzbin.info/door/l_5s2WDFi38LiXUQA7CTWQ - AF activated with the shutter button (set to single point AF) - the AF button activates eye-AF - the button * next to it is set to AF Stop -> free for manual focus - zooming in (x6 & x15) is free with the button next to the display and free to be used for MF via the + button as well The thumb's jobs: classic AF: free for moving the AF point using the joy stick /the screen, switching full screen / x6 zoom / 15x zoom with the button next to the screen eye AF: via AF button instant MF: via + button stopping AF initially without changing AF point, zoom & focus status Who ever prefers pure back button focus setup just has change settings of the shutter button (no AF activation) and the * button (AF on) lens

Yes mate dont be afraid of saying it. With wildlife photography gear matters. People who say it doesn't matter for all photography are just not using their brains. Stuff like portraiture is much less gear dependant on gear, for sure. You dont have to have fantastic gear to get a fantastic photo, but this isn't the same thing as a blanket statement that gear doesn't matter. I have the exact same outfit as he's using here, and it feels like cheating its that good.

Dippers are tricky. I usually have the best result when I sit still in one spot and wait. Perhaps those Danske dippers are different. With regards to the R5, I consider it to be a game changer. I'm far from a gear head but I must say that eye AF is unreal. Not perfect but a significant step ahead of the AF in my 5D IV and 1Dx II. And the large sensor does yield quite a bit of latitude with regards to cropping. Having said that, the skill of the photographer matters more than anything else IMO. Love the content Morten. Keep it coming. Hilsen fra en Dansker i Canada.

One tip I found really useful with my R6: I configured the "normal" AF-ON button to do "normal" Single Point Back Button AF and the "*" Button to do Eye-Detect AF, so you can switch between these two modes within a blink of an eye, depending on the situation. I just feel the built in TC is not as good as I expected when taking stills, since I already got used to my Sigma 500mm f/4. I can't justify the weight-performance balance of this lens for bird photography, since I walked a lot.
