Cannock Chase is one of the Midlands largest birding locations covering an impressive 79 square kilometers. Over the years it's become one of my staples consisiting of old woodland, open heather and tall connifer plantations, it provides a wide array of different environments for wildlife to thrive. It's an area I frequently visit throughout the year to photograph the wildlife and to simply enjoy the great outdoors.

I'm Damian John, a live music turned wildlife photographer from the West Midlands, UK. Join me as I go on adventures photographing wildlife attempting to give a more honest insight into the world of wildlife photography. Not every trip is going to be filled with rare once in a lifetime species so come with me and learn to appreciate all of natures beautiful little creatures, one photograph at a time.

That wooded area looks is a popular spot for us landscape togs, often called the Dancers. Love it around there. And they are oaks, with a mix of silver birch

After a quiet is coming alive again, Crossbills, Nuthatch, flocks of Golcrests, Green Woodpeckers and at the top near the car park Ravens are displaying, tumbling and rolling, and yesterday (20/9) the first signs of the Fallow deer rut, 2x three or four year olds hammering away at each other and several of the big lads roaring and scent tasting (and I even managed to get a few good shots of the action). Another top video and some great shots of a great area.

That's fantastic news, looks like I'll have to get back up there soon, I'd love to see the deer rutting. Cheers for the positive comment! 😄

There are a few great spots to shoot the rut, usually 20-30 bucks and about 200 does in a natural amphitheatre, the action really (usually) starts about 10th October, all day action

I love that place. My aunt and uncle lived in Heather Rd. So when my parents used to visit . Me and my cousin used to explore those woods. a lot has changed since then.

Thank you! Glad to hear it's of use, out of curiosity do you think it would be useful to show the RAW files opposed to just the edited files?

@@damianjohnwildlife I suppose it could be handy to show the difference ,I don't shoot in RAW as I am still learning the basics , I own a Canon 90D and a Sigma 150-600c and I can get quite good results on a sunny day ,not so good when its dull !

Hi Damian, at 11:15 there is a broken tree on the left, try returning to the area in mid-October to hear if there are any tawny owl calls. with us they had made a nest in a similar trunk. we heard them in October, and at the beginning of April we had 3 pullets 🥰
