I’ve done a few horizontally. Hardest part is def hollowing it out. I put one screw in so I can rotate the door (floor in you house) so u can clean it out….

It was worth the effort to hollow the log out instead of screwing several peices together. The chickadees have moved in!

Did house sparrows invade? If so, reduce the entry hole to 1 1/8". Chicadee can enter a hole that small.

I also use green wood. Each time i try to make a cup,it always cracks after i get the inside dug out. I guess leaving the bark on would help??

Green wood wants to dry. Green wood will crack easier. It's best to use seasoned wood

It's usually humid here so mine is still doing great. The bluebirds love it

After you got the 1st part of the hole saw done.. you could have taken some coals and let the burn 🔥 thier way down. That’s the way the Indians cut out logs to make canoes 🛶

I do not. I turn any scrap wood I can into bird houses. They are my pest control bird army
