Birding Success at Crex Meadows Wisconsin: Wildlife Video

Sparky Stensaas goes birding at Wisconsin's Crex Meadows State Wildlife Area. Highlights include an Eastern Kingbird landing on the back of a Bald Eagle (!), singing Field Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Eastern Towhee, Black Tern, Trumpeter Swan, Sandhill Crane, and the rare Blanding's Turtle. Wildlife video with Panasonic GH5 (slow motion at 180 fps). Wildflowers including 4 species of milkweed (including the rare Dwarf Milkweed (Asclepias ovalifolia), Butterfly Milkweed, Spiderwort, Wood Lily, Prairie Larkspur and more.

Hi Sparky, great video. So wish I knew my bird calls half as well as you do. We have thought about making it up to Western/Northern MN and coming back down Eastern WI for years now, from Kansas City area. We're aware that the misquotes and deer flies are legendary up there. Especially after seeing around ten deer flies flying around your head. Watching you walk out in the prairie, curious about how bad the chiggers are up there too in July and if there's anything you use to keep those under control too?

Hi Reel Diel, No chiggers up here...too far north. Maybe in some isolated spots, but I've only got them in Texas. Deer flies, mosquitos, horse flies, ticks...These are the real problems. But some 15-25% DEET bug spray works wonders. Come on up! The Sax-Zim Bog is best in winter, but lots to see in summer too.
