It is hard to interpret but I always saw that moment when sam first looked down but then looked up and smiled as symbolic of the notion that she no longer looks down at her father but looks up to him with pride and awe, as a child would look up to their parents.

Also, Riggan is in a hospital so hearing sirens near the building would be expected and outside there is a crowd, there are voices, but I would say they are the paparazzi kicked out of the hospital

Sam (the daughter) mentioned how she felt he was never there and that the harder he tried to make up for it caused her suffering. Soon after he short himself, his redemption in the artistic world transcended him to freedom. He didn’t really fly away, he freed himself and his daughter. And that’s why she smiles up at the sky. Riggen is at peace with his life and Sams at peace with hers. BOOM CHAKALAKALAKA!!!!
@brucekristich40733 жыл бұрын
he kills himself when he jumps and so we exit his imaginary world and enter hers. now she sees what he was able to see while escaping hard realities around him: superpowers and flying. Sirens were real and for him as there is a time delay between his jump and her appearance that validates it.

Whatever went down at the end I love the casting of Birdman. Michael Keaton formerly Batman, complains that everyone who he wants as a replacement is in a comic book movie and then they get Edward Norton, formerly the Hulk. What a great dig at the assholes who fired the incomparable Norton from being the Hulk. I love how this movie bashes big Blockbuster comic book crap. It gives us a real theater, like in Barton Fink. Birdman is a masterpiece of criticism of the selling out of actors and being true as an artist to your craft. Ego. The acting, the music, the directing, the production, the lighting, everything about Birdman is awesome whether you look at it subjectively or objectively doesn't really matter, it's perfect any way you want to look at it.

I’m a little late in this conversation and I just watched the movie last night and In my interpretation is that he saw his face in the mirror and laughed at the new nose and his daughter saw and laughed too happy ending in my book because he tried to redeem himself for having a proper relationship with his daughter and to juggle with his career and whenever he did it will always intertwine with him like that one dude who tried to get with his daughter he punched him because he cared and he had remorse when he spoke to his ex wife when they talked about missing his daughters birth. ik it’s in his imagination because they prepared for this scene to happen when he was flying around New York but in reality he was in a taxi if you remember you know all in all I think he didn’t die because hospital windows are always locked and don’t say they don’t because I’ve been in hospitals and they are always closed why do you think they are always closed because the air conditioning and people would try to commit suicide these rules and safety measures were made by blood and all in all even if he were to open it he can’t do it without super strength lmao

Here's what I think: - Riggan died, as evidence by the police sirens. - Sam, daughter of Riggan, has the same genes as Riggan and may have supposedly caught a glimpse (awakened) of Riggan in his glorified state. Just my theory

So, it seems that the authors had no idea for a great ending and decided to do something senseless and let the fans build a theory about it. But that would "be small", wouldn't it ?

I'd say that when he had that hallucination on the street he would've seen that it's pointless to try to be relevant again, because art was created to entertain while giving a message, a critique, a warning...He ended up his scene which fit with his arc throughout the movie and felt that the message of his play was done, trying to kill himself in the process. His daughter looking up and smiling (in my idiot opinion) was kinda like a snap, it was when she understood her father's point.
@artisfire6 жыл бұрын
If the sequence with the daughter at the end happened, and is not in his dying imagination, then he's either flying (which is not likely as the rest of the film shows) or doing something else above her (not likely), but not dead, considering her smiling face and slight chuckle (unless she's nuts.) So he's not flying and not dead, and there is no way to put the pieces together in any logical conclusion.The ending for me seems a cop-out and bad writing. You can't show fantasy without a base in reality or you can just show nonsensical images that follow no story-line and call it a movie. In art school we weren't allowed to say 'it's open to the viewers interpretation' which is code for laziness or that the artist doesn't really have anything they're trying to communicate. You do a lot of that with this video yourself, saying a lot but saying absolutely nothing at the same time, or giving any realistic conclusions, like the film, giving no real or probable answers
@Johny_Truant5 жыл бұрын
Ummm, film exists to either entertain or convey a message or both. This film did both. It doesn't need to be wrapped up in a pretty bow on a box for you to untie and find all the answers inside. It makes you think. Sorry that you prefer the answers handed to you on a silver platter. Perhaps Michael Bay films are more your cup of tea, mate.

Interesting observations. I wonder about a couple of other issues at the end. Why was Birdman sitting on the toilet? And even more so, why was the warm light and sunshine in his hospital room when Riggan went into the bathroom changed so dramatically (and deliberately, I assume) to a reflected sky blue/cool tone and the park and buildings now in shadow, considering he was only in the bathroom for a real-time minute or two? Very curious, and I would think (hope?) that it wasn't just bad planning that resulted in their losing time and daylight during filming!

i can tell you after seeing it back in the day and rewatching it he committed sucide at the end all the stuff with him levitating and moving stuff flying etc was all in his imagination the point of the movie though was he proved his daughter wrong she thought he was nothing but in reality his insanity kept boosting ratings on the play even the critic hated him and his other lead but it was actually enhanced by his weirdness but he also succumbed to insanity but embraced it

I loved this movie, but what I don't love is the ending being so ambiguous. I'm also not a fan of how directors don't make choices with the outcome of their characters. It's like the sopranos ending. They said its up to the viewer to decide. I think that is chicken shit film making and lazy. If you put together a great movie have the guts to stand by your ending. That's just totally scary film making!

Father doesn't have to die to make her daughter look upto him and not down! Her daughter was also not good by herself! People have worse parents and they turn out good and look at her being addicted and fooling around with person who messed up with his father! Was she any good? Something about this movie doesn't set well for me!! He didn't have to commit suicide!!! That was not heroic! However we can take this as how Stardom and self higher expectations create dark loop for celebraties and actors which affect them mentally in negative way, in that way movie seems accurate.

I think this is lazy directing. Even one of the writers doesn't know what the f is going on. Iñárritu could have taken it to any bizzare ending he wanted, but at least have it be a bit of eureka moment that surprises us. Which can only happen if you stick to the established narrative. How more than once, we are witness to his absent mindedness or destructive behaviour that others see when he only sees his magical powers. So if it is all true, he does have magical powers, and Sam is awestruck in wonder, then the ending must also explain what was the significance of the cabbie running in for money, or his agent buddy witnessing him actually throwing objects. Were those the fantasies? That doesn't make sense either though as any kind of plot investment. Option 2, its all in his head. And the ending scene, with his daughter looking up, presumably at him, is also all in his head. He's laying on the pavement, bleeding out, and this is the final final for sure last hallucination he wants to leave the world remembered as. His adoring daughters gaze, finally seeing him as he really is, the reluctant super hero he has been all along. But either ending, or variation, is a cop out. I would have been somewhat forgiving if Iñárritu would have at least said he did have his own reasons for the ending, but that he wasn't going to share, and instead allow everyone to interpret it as they wished. But even he admitted that it was all up to the audience. I don't know, there are all kinds of clever endings a creative person like that could have come up with. And no, not that awful idea of Depp as a movie pirate.
