bird declines due to pesticide exposure, insect population is reduced, this natural food source for birds is also reduced.
Birds can be exposed to pesticides directly through ingestion of seeds that have been treated with pesticides, or indirectly through consumption of small insects and other animals that have ingested the pesticides themselves, leading to secondary poisonings of the bird.
They can also be indirectly affected through decline in insect population. When the insect population is reduced, this natural food source for birds is also reduced. Since these pesticides kill target and non target species alike, there are fewer flies, grasshoppers, stinkbugs, and caterpillars for the birds to feast
In doses that do not kill, pesticides cause a myriad of adverse effects on the health of birds. These can include a reduction in the amount of food consumed, loss of weight, changes in physical activity, and a decrease in the production, fertility, or hatch-ability of eggs.
Exposure to pesticides during reproductive stages affects hatching success and fledging survival, as well as increases the chance of reproductive failure. Alteration of feeding behavior, compromised immune system and increased predation further reduces the ability of these birds to maintain healthy populations.
Pesticides injure birds both directly and indirectly, and birds are often affected by a combination of different kinds of effects.
