As a young kid visiting family in Goa during summer holidays, I’d hear these birds all day but never saw them. I did today.

Sadly, much of this natural and cultural heritage is now being rapidly lost, as are the quiet and spotless streets of Goa, thanks to the influx of Indians from other states, who want to settle down there. Many housing projects are coming up, replacing beautiful wooded areas with ugly concrete structures. Indians from the rest of the country are buying land to build modern, ugly houses with no space for any garden, as they fear that that will attract snakes. Indigenous trees are being replaced with palms and Australian plants. Beautiful Portuguese houses are being replaced with ugly tasteless structures. Once the gardens are gone, the birds will disappear too. Quiet evenings are now replaced with heavy traffic noise and air pollution. Lush forests and pristine river banks with mangroves are being replaced with ugly casinos, bars and ghettos with trance music. Native Goans do not have any useful occupation or skills, so they sell their land to unscrupulous builders to earn a quick buck. Millions of Indians visit Goa every year, attracted to its "foreign" culture and cleanliness, a welcome change from their own filthy cities and towns in the rest of India. These visitors contribute to the mess and noise, and destroy whatever serenity, cleanliness and peace is left. Goa is dying an ugly death at the hands of its own people.

David: I think you missed in your extensive collection of Birds in Goa, a bird which during the monsoon season makes a nest on coconut palm trees. The nests are in the form of " Mateus wine bottle". The female bird nest where the eggs are hatched has on the side a round entrance. That of the male bird has an entrance in the bottom part where the bird "stands on watch" the other nest. Did you have a chance to see these nests during your stay in Assagao ?
