This movie is just a lot of fun. While I can definitely see its flaws, I didn't really care, because I was having a good time. Great to see that you had some fun with it as well even if you did not love it If you like Shmigadoon, you might also enjoy Galavant which is a cheesy musical series about a knight who wants to win his love back after she married the bad guy.

This movie is good but The Suicide Squad (2021) is great. Birds Of Prey is directed by Cathy Yen & The Suicide Squad is directed by James Gunn so it's like night & day. Margot Robbie is line the Harley Quinn from the animated series & comics in The Suicide Squad.

Another problem with this film for many fans when it was released is the name of the film. Many comic book fans felt it should just been called the fantabulous emancipation of Harley Quinn because she isn't in the comics associated with the birds of prey team and fans of birds of prey felt those characters were relegated to side characters in Harley's story. It kinda rubbed some fans in a poor way. It was beloved due to Harley Quinn's popularity that the birds of prey were outshined. Imo this film just got dealt a lot of poor hands that hurt it when it was released. But it did form a decent fan base who really did like this film so another divisive DC film was made :/

Oh yeah, they are definitely side characters in this. And not really through any faullt of their own. They'd be interesting enough if Harley/Margot Robbie wasn't SO interesting and captivating on screen that you just want to see more of her!

I and much of the fandom was very disappointed Harley didn't kill the cops. Yes the smoke visuals are great but like 2016 suicide squad said, she's a "bad guy". In the comics Harley Quinn has been a hero, anti hero, and straight up villain. She is a great character. In the 1993 Batman cartoon MADE FOR KIDS, where she was first introduced by the creators of the show, she shoots at the police and Batman with a bazooka. But this film couldn't trust it's audience to see Harley, a villain in 2016, to shoot some cops when a police detective is on the case to arrest her? Harley is a great villain and she can shoot at cops but still be likable. She was in the children's cartoon. In the episode she shoots at cops, the creators humanized her and made her a character kids could still feel for. 2019 Joker film had the cops killed at the end by joker's followers and that film did very well with audiences and box office. But with this film it felt like holding the character Harley back as not to offend people. But again the visuals were so good that fans of the film especially those who enjoy a less villainous Harley enjoyed that the film chose to refrain. This was a divisive film in the fandom for what elements of Harley were adapted and which parts the film left out

Yeah, it's all about what kind of movie they wanted to make and if they had the courage to really "go there" or not.

@@OldLadyReacts True. But imo it was well done in the 2016 suicide squad film when she shoots at Batman telling him he's running date night. That was a GREAT Harley and joker car chase. Imo either write Harley to not shoot at cops or do, but commit. The writer could've had her just sick Bruce the hyena on some police while she gets Cain and make it a more comedic moment. Or cause a distraction. If the creatives don't want cop shooting Harley just don't put her in that position. I can't deny tho that the smoke did look cool on her assault on the police station. So some fans loved it, others like myself felt the scene didn't work. To each their own.

This movie came out right before the pandemic and Imo it really hurt the box office but the fandom views this as the start of DC film decline. Imo unfairly because there is a lot to like within this film. But also there was so many changes about the comics original source material that comic book fans were divided on this film. And then like you mentioned there was elements in the film that didn't work like story so film fans and general audiences didn't end up supporting this film as much as well. Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya are very different in the comics. Cain is a martial arts adult badass so making her younger or infantilizing her, the Asian girl, turned off some comic book fans who felt it was a racist portrayal from a badass character. For comparison, in the comics Cassandra Cain is closer to Lucy Liu in kill bill, like a more heroic less mob boss version, rather than this pick pocketer portrayal. Also the usual crowd of people who dislike women driven films didn't support this film either. So a kinda perfect storm from multiple groups of people to avoid this film that hurt it a lot when it was released. And lastly, a lot of lgbtq+ fans felt underwhelmed because the advertising of this film made it seem that black mask and zsasz were a couple and in the film it ends up for some feeling more like queer-baiting just to get their ticket money instead of exploring that aspect to the characters more. That's why zsasz was implied to be able to calm him down, they were insinuated in marketing at the time to be a clear gay couple but many fans felt that wasn't well done in this film. So a lot of groups of people upset with this film.

Wow, sometimes I wonder if the people who make these movies even LIKE the characters and stories they're telling!

@@OldLadyReacts sometimes they do, sometimes especially with the first few dceu films was just attempts to get that avengers level marvel money. By the time this film released with Margot Robbie as executive producer like how Scar Jo and Tom Hiddelston were executive producers for black widow and Loli season 1 + 2, I think Robbie just made strong creative choices about maybe the aspects she did like about the characters. Which is why I feel Harley is so much better developed in this film vs the supporting cast. But Robbie and others on this film like execs, writers, director, etc might've just not understood the bird of prey characters as much. Which is why they feel so much more underdeveloped. Cop proving her worth. Revenge plot. Trouble making kid. Trapped singer in mob style organization. Basic archetypes of characters. But DC films suffer from making basic archetypes characters in multiple films not just this film. Even the 2019 joker was basic man is pushed into violence plot that was common in films decades ago. Taxi driver already explored that kind of character arguably better.

I agree about the lack of build-up, particularly with Sionis. It's supposed to be a big moment when he puts on the mask, but it's just a dud (and it covers his face -- and he's been acting his ass off until then, doing his best to fill in what's lacking in the script). Yes, Margot Robbie carries the movie on her back. (And, yes, The Suicide Squad is much better.)

ugh. Characters I love, ruined. A continuation of how it is that DC simply can't make good movies. And simultaneously, an indicator of the looming demise of Marvel... Happily, the age of comic book movies is over...

I dunno, I feel like Marvel could pull it together eventually. Or shift to a old-school Daredevil/Blade style and go to town that way.
