A few years ago I was in a local pet store and saw Hyacinths (NOT being sold! They were just hanging out there being taken care of while their humans were on vacation!) and that was when I realized how BIG those guys really are. And it was so intimidating for someone that didn’t know much about birds.
@jedimasterpickle34 жыл бұрын
There was a Hyacinth for a long time at my local bird store where a lot of birds my parents have had over the years (including my current bird of 23 years). It was always a highlight of the trip to play with him. Like Hymie in this video, this macaw really liked going on people's shoulders. So I would rarely pick him up and just play with him instead. Eventually though I figured I could retain control by gripping both of his feet. Eventually he was sold, and I hope he's happy. He was extremely friendly and playful, but needed a firm hand to set boundaries. Always thought Hyacinths were a lot of fun, but given how huge they are, how much they cost, and how long they live, I would never get one myself.

I just want to say as an owner of a blue front amazon for thirty years, do not get any bird unless you are ready to invest all that is required to care for them. People buy on impulse because they're pretty or they're funny but the amount of work is substantial. The constant cleaning of the cage, the constant bringing of food and snacks, you can't just leave seed in a bowl, the concern when the bird is alone and you need to get home, the cost of boarding when you go away, the noise. They are beautiful but they have great needs, need for good food, need for companionship, need to be let out of the cage, more needs than a baby. At least a baby would have grown up by now and left home after thirty years but still I am doing all these things. I just want to caution, be aware of all that is involved before investing in any bird, of course a budgie is easy. Many times I have wished I could go back in time and wish I would've gotten a budgie instead of my bird. Very high maintenance. Be forewarned.

Just discovered your work by chance. I was annoying myself watching Tyler Nolan show-ponying with his exotic pets and becoming more concerned over a period of months at his beautiful Macaws obvious psychological and physiological deterioration and your partner featured in one of his clips. He bought along toys, tools, instruction books, explained and gave him a correct dietary regimen and also explained that your enrichment toys were non-toxic and made with natural material. I was immediately impressed with his holistic approach and obvious specialist knowledge. So ... I have been watching your library of videos ... and have only just started. I find it distressing that any random person can buy a big parrot like a Macaw or a sulphur-crested Cockatoo and have no obligation to be educated or trained to manage these birds. Often they have absolutely no idea of the importance of the social life imperative for these birds to flourish ... or enrichment techniques, correct diet, aviary requirements and so on. I think bird ownership for partots needs to be regulated and monitored ... much like raptors are. It is inhumane for an intelligent creature like these magnificent birds to just be a Pretty Object to be admired in a cage or taught a few phrases. I am so glad I fell down this rabbit hole and will be subbing and raving about you to others. It must be so hard for you and your partner to not be overwhelmed at the amount of bad husbandry and mistreatment manifesting out of sheer ignorance you must observe. You must understand the scale of the problematic conditions and misguided treatment by casual hobbyists. I guess it is one day and one bird at a time. Thank you for making the effort to film your great content, and all the post-production work that necessarily entails. BTW ... Have you seen an English website called: " Falconry and Me " ?? I encourage you to take a look. She is a young woman who has an incredible array of raptors that she fledged or rehabbed as, unlike America or the Middle East, catching raptors in the wild to train is not allowed in th UK. I think you would enjoy her content particularly as she is training species of birds so diametrically opposed to your bright, LOUD (!) strongly social parrots. Her smazing raven Fable can talk (when she wants to). Check it out ... It is well worth a visit (I dont know if you have the time to read your comments though ) Anyway. Big thanks from a viewer in New Zealand somewhat idle from Covid-19 lockdowns. We have a native parrot called a Kea which is renowned for stealing out of backpacks and decimating windscreen wipers on parked cars in the mountainous terrain of NZs South Island. A group together is labelled a " Circus of Keas " by biologists here. There are numerous clips of their antics on Google if you are interested. They are very funny and precociously smart (as all parrots are, of course.) Keep safe and well.
@wil.d_sage4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you mentioned falconry. I am an apprentice falconer in the US and I have wondered what would happen if exotic birds were regulated like raptors. I don't think they do this in the UK but here in the states you have to study for and pass a state mandated test (which covers raptor life history, diet, disease causes, treatments, and prevention, hunting ethics, and husbandry), find an experienced falconer to sponsor/mentor you for a minimum of 2 years, have your mews (raptor aviary) and equipment inspected by a game warden (who can also show up any time after that randomly to check up on the bird's well-being), and you need to apply for a license (which you can only get after passing the test and finding a sponsor). Your mews and equipment also have to meet certain requirements. A lot of people go, "I want to be a falconer" but then nope out the second they find they have to take a test. They really just want a falcon to sit on their fist and look cool. A lot like with parrots. People also don't realize that it is a hunting sport. You have to hunt with your bird, multiple times a week. That is the point of falconry and has been for the past four thousand years; its putting food on the table. But how many parrots would be kept if people had to prove their bird knowledge and husbandry know-how with a test. Or if their aviaries had to meet certain requirements and be inspected by an game warden. Of course these things don't prevent poor husbandry, but it does weed out a whole lot of people who would have been prone to make those mistakes. And of course falconry is very different from keeping parrots. Raptors aren't companion animals, they are hunting partners. They allow you to hunt with them since you are valuable but they aren't social by any means. In fact, if you take poor care of your bird, the second you head out into the field they'll just fly off since you're useless. They don't form bonds with you like parrots do. I don't keep parrots though, so I wonder what parrot owners think about that.

Anyway, lots of people think they want the big birds......maybe you could do videos on how hard they really are. Like how much they eat, how quickly they destroy $30+ toys, how needy they get when bored, how noisy they can be when bored or even just crazy noisy they are when happy. Don't forget the messes they make...and don't forget big bird equals big poop and lots of it. Also how about how smart, mischievous, and manipulating they can really be. When our GW is bored and wants to play with the other birds like our cockatiel, he will go let him out of his cage. How about how quirky they can be as individuals, if we don't change out one of our GW stands poop papers down below it, he will pull the papers off himself and throw them around. Im sure big bird owners have lots of fun(?)quirky bird stories. All that said he is a member of the family and we couldn't be without him......but some days he pushes that pretty hard....🤦

Tech Lid News I would say African greys are easier to handle than macaws are by a long shot. Macaws are known to have behavioral issues if not socialized properly and can do a lot more damage they also have pretty annoying diets. I own a B&G and he is far more energetic destructive and harder to train than any African grey I’ve met. I am of the school of thought that people should pick a bird that fits their lifestyle not a beginner bird that they don’t want in the first place. Do your research and join a training class with your baby bird and often times you will be a far better owner than most people in the parrot community. On the flip side though. You should be 100% sure you can handle a hyacinth macaw. It’s a 10-24 thousand dollar bird.

I currently am owned by a Red-Fronted Macaw. We have been together for nearly 35 years. Yep you read that right. He loves to dance & play. He has been talking since I got him (6 mos old). I already rescued a grey so they taught each other lots of things. Fast forward. We’re in rural FL & his home is outside(always has been). We have a family of crows here in the oak behind my house. It didn’t take Big B long to speak crow, craine, duck, & horse! One day I heard him talking, but it was coming from a different direction. Low & behold the crow picked up a few words that B often says! I knew they were very smart, but this was without human input. My fav parrot & owner is Alex & Dr Pepperburg( I know Alex passed). I love watching her video of him & how smart he was.

So I'm watching a video about a hyacinth, and the budgie sounds in the background is reminding me how much I miss having them around!

He sadly passed away some years back, Sheri (his owner) let me know. We usually got to revisit with him often when we toured the east coast. Def miss him!

I LOVE hyacinth macaws because of there coloring. All birds are a dream bird for me because I’ve never had a bird but I would like one if the future allows it.

Hymie is such a cutie! I don't think I would personally ever get a hyacinth but I definitely love them.

Looked half year for a baby hyacinth & found one…but not having enough bird time, space, $$ for toys, cage, commitment training skills etc. ... reality set in... still quite content with my Sun C. & A. Gray tho. 🐤💛🐦🖤 Beautiful bird if ya can treat as deserved ...

@Wattle it wasn't the fact that she was a hybrid that made her my dream bird but her personality. She was honestly a quite ratty looking bird. So I guess really any bird that I connect with like that is my "dream bird"
