Hey! love your videos and have been following you for a long time now as my plan was to get a bird in a few years and I wanted to be properly prepared before I took one home. but plans changed when I brought in five zebra finches. A species I never intended to acquire, but could not help but take them home because they lived in an extremely poor home without enrichment, too small a cage to be able to fly and just awful in every way. And I wonder if your bird diet also applies to finches? will switch to self-mixed seed feed immediately so thanks for the video, it helped a lot, but wondering if I can use your book and be able to make the vegetable mixture for the finches or if it is only for "bigger" birds like budgies and up and not the relly small? All the information i find just says that they should eat seeds and maybe some vegetables sometimes. They live freely in a room and fly around / build nests and are very active all day if it makes any difference in what they should eat. right now they get some kind of vegetable every day and once- two times a week they get egg yolks and sometimes some fruit so I know they will eat at least some types of vegetables / fruits without any problems.

I have a young conure who still seems to be addicted to his hand-rearing food... I got it from the breader along with seeds for a seed diet. The breeder said that I should be giving him the seeds and hand-rearing food instead of pellets. I did get my bird pellets without these added sugars and bright colors, but he seems to be addicted to his hand-rearing food which he eats by himself. Would it be smart to mix grinded pellets and the hand-rearing food? Just so he gets used to eating them...

I am training a pair of 3-month old lovebirds who came to me on a slurry of seeds and formula. I switched to a slurry of seeds and crushed pellets for dinner. They ate it next morning. The following morning, after their small breakfast, I left only dry pellets in their bowl. By noon, they had been crumbled.

So i have a problem. One of my finches will eat chop no problem, even if seeds are offered, she goes for the veggies (i absolutely adore her for this) the other one will throw all the vegetables out and dig for the seeds. He will disperse them with his beak, and eat only the seeds. He will only eat vegetables out of my hand if they're fresh, but wll not eat chop that I've thawed. Why :( the only way to get any vegetables in his system is to sit there and offer him fresh leaves from my hand. What to do now, so confused.

For those of you that live near stores that offer grains in bulk bins, that might also be an option for purchasing small and larger quantities. i live near a health market coop (PCC) so I can get most of those organic ingredients in any quantity. Also I think some Kroger stores have bulk bins in their natural / organic section as well. Just a thought. Maybe you have a local health food store near you. Amazon can be expensive because the "free shipping" isn't really free. They just build it into their price.

The only copies of you book is for $116 Australian dollars which seems a bit pricy to mei could not find it easily on your website I resently lost my approximately seven year old female budgie she showed no signs of illness but she was I believe very typical of many budgies woes very reluctant to change especially in regard to her food she came from the breeder eating a commercial mainly millet product it took nearly a year to get her eating sprouted seeds and even that had to have seeds sprinkled over top of it she then took a huge leap forward and tried hard boiled eggs but I really think it was her diet that caused what was a reasonably early death she often looked overweight to me around the middle which I believe is a side effect of a pure seed diet that’s it makes them prone to fatty tumours. And even some cancer’s and ultimately fatty liver disease which of corse in people cats and dogs can lead to type two diabeties I never noticed any symptoms of diabeties in her but they would be a bit hard to pick up with a bird as opposed to in larger mammals like people cats and dogs wear frequent urination increased thirst and fatigue all much more noticeable on other pets and easier to treat how you would treat diabeties in a bird I don’t know but I now wonder if my girl had fatty liver disease or even a cancer but find vets who know what they are doing with birds is rare I used to work for a vet who went into birds because of his love of birds of prey and he w would get birds from all over the state coming hundreds of miles to see him he also did a lot of consulting at the zoo in Melbourne we also have a big wildlife sanctuary at a place outside Melbourne at a place called Healesville it get mainly native animals and birds he used work out there aswell aswell as all the native and exotic birds he saw I saw him work with domestic chickens he would see anything a and not just the paying customers he would treat sparrows starlings and crows as well he just really loved birds he of cours still treated all the usual domestic pets that come to a busy clinic in his spare time he bred St. Bernard dogs so he was a very hard working vet

Buying the crappy seeds (i.e. Kaytee) so i decided to do your mix. Omg they love it!! It did not take any convincing even with my budgies! One of my tiels came from an abusive home (tail feathers cut off, wings all trimmed including secondaries, kept in cage all day, only attention she got was being yelled at. You know, all of the best stuff to make a terrified bird. Even with the new home, new flock (she was quarantined), new mommy, new cage, new toys (she had like 1 or 2), new perches (again she had like 2..and they were dowels) and she just dove into that food right away! Only took maybe an hour or so for her to acclimate to it. Also told my vet and she loves your mix!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ♥ and feathers 🦜!

No, they're for parrots. I read an article on BirdTricks to not help the birds because the ones who eat at the feeder are the sick birds and healthy birds who eat at the feeder will get sick too. It did recommend putting out a bird bath, though.

This video is gold!! Thank you! I just got my first budgie and the pet store forgot to give me the seed the bird was on and they were over an hour away! I used whatever I had from your seed mix and BAM, baby boy was hustling to eat that seed! Thank you!!!

Also: one tip if you have bigger birds already, and you're trying to convert your smaller birds to something else- birds are very "monkey see, monkey do" kind of animals. If they watch the other birds eating something, they can't resist checking it out and giving it a try as well. That's literally the only thing that convinced my budgies to try fresh vegetables.

What’s your opinion on the use of harnesses(like the aviator harness) overall, and specifically on small birds?
@raomuhammadd4 жыл бұрын
I (just my opinion) love it
@gloria-io7xc4 жыл бұрын
Watch.... Live Laugh Birds, Elle teaches and uses a Harness on her Green Cheek Conure. I am in the process of doing the same since I can't free fly my GCC because that would be dangerous for him but I want to take him outside with me!
@mimthyss4 жыл бұрын
personally I think harnesses can be great if they're used correctly and not forced on the bird etc. Slowly and kindly introduced so it's not scary, desensitising the bird to the outdoors safely and slowly as well just like you would if you intend to free fly them, etc. Since birds can still be scared and fly away obviously on a harness, but they won't get far.. still, I wonder if they could hurt themselves if they get spooked and yank the harness against themselves because they try to fly . So I think it's best to make sure they're desensitised and such and comfortable with a harness before doing that. Can always take them out in bird carriers instead as well? :3c
@boilingsoda4 жыл бұрын
I believe Jamie has said harnesses are good while you’re teaching them free flight but you should make sure it doesn’t become a crutch for them
@mimthyss4 жыл бұрын
@@boilingsoda yes true! I do remember her saying something like that I think. If the end goal isn't free flight though, then I wonder what she would think? 🤔

Blue looks like my Conan that I had for 13 years. He was purchased from a trade day by my uncle for $2 and given to me for my 16th birthday. That little guy was so amazing. He said so many phrases and words, played with every toy possible with me and others, and was cuddly and sweet. We now have 2 GCCs. I have found that our female is finicky. However, if I mix blueberry into anything, she eats it right away.

So nostalgic! The budgie I had as a kid wasn't on a seed diet by sheer luck. It was available to him all day but he happened to only want one type of seed in that entire blend. He ate the vegetables we would eat that day supplemented by the one tolerable seed in the blend, lol. Iceberg lettuce was his most favourite food in the entire world, especially the crunchier white parts. The little guy even preferred it to millet... Weirdo.

Hey quick question, i made this for my bird but some of the seeds i didn’t put in because they don’t sell it. I didn’t put these in: millet, oats groats, hemp seeds and rape seeds. Do i need to buy these online? Or doesn’t it matter if i didn’t put these in? He is eating it right now btw!

Hi! You should look into my friends’ mix. It’s called Littles Grassland Blend, and it has so many fresh amazing ingredients! I’d be using that entirely for my birds if it would safely travel to Australia but Hemp seeds and other seeds are not allowed to be brought in here. Please check them out! They put so much work into it and it’s such high quality. It’s made by a parrot shelter.

Arganthia Crow we are glad we are not in the USA lol, though we do fear that corona may not get defeated with the attitude over there. I also fear for your post boxes being removed, why the hell...?? Thankfully our cases are low - I think we have 260 total across Australia or something? We do have a guy in the eastern states trying to sue the western states for not letting him in though. I’ve been trying to convert my fussy Jenday Conure, Punch, to the Seasonal Feeding System for weeks. It’s been brutal. I was SO happy to see this video today. I ran out to buy the ingredients at the organic grocery near me and was able to find everything but the rape seed. That said, I mixed everything together (other than the rape seed) and Punch dove into it like a crazy bird. I think he indeed missed the crunch in his diet. Tomorrow we will add the sweet potato to the chopped diet and the seed mix and see how we do. Thanks,Jamieleigh for this recipe. I’m thrilled to see Punch happily eating his food. 🙏
