+ulisess I've been saying this for so long. It's awful how so many English-speakers just think of The Clash, Black Flag, or Rancid or some shit when you say "big punk group" and nobody has a clue how big and important of a band BiS was.

+Digital Ghost Totally agree with you. For me Punk is not only a music style, is a way of make music and a certain "modus operandi" based on the self-managed and faced up to the mainstream culture. The Clash or Dead Kennedys were "big punk groups", as well as The Pixies or Mano Negra, and BiS of course.

ulisess That's a really good way of putting it. Yeah, it's a shame that despite how "open-minded" the western world's punk scene is, they won't even fucking bat an eye at anything that isn't white and homogenized for them. A friend of mine put it beautifully (mocking people for this kind of view): "I like 18 genres of alternative metal but I heard a K-pop song once so I know that I hate all Asian music that isn't Boris."

+ulisess I don't necessarily agree. I think for BiS punk is exactly a style. They are not a band. Their producer and agent decide what kind of music they sing. The members don't necessarily know what punk is or like it. They are a so-called "idol group", whose major aim as a profession in Japan is to win more fans so that they will but tickets to their concerts and hand-shaking events, and but their items. There was an "idol-boom" several years ago as AKB48 grew big. And as there was more competition, there were more idol groups that label themselves with different "styles. For example, you have hip-hop idol group, vaporwave idol group, heavy-metal idol group, disco idol-group and stuff like that. The only aim is to have a distinctive brand and be remembered. If you listen to BiS' earlier songs, they were more like 80's or something I can't remember, but nothing punk at all. It was only later that they started doing things like making all-nude MVs, holding hugging events with fans, and collaborate with noise bands, but all that is only for making a brand. It might be a kind of subculture, but it's all operating under the capitalist entertainment market and serves as a complement rather than a rebel to mainstream culture.

Weiwei Zhang See, that's not really BiS at all. BiS was literally just a project that Pour Lui started because she realized her solo career was failing and that the entire idol culture (that you're trying to say they were a part of) is bullshit. BiS broke up because they DIDN'T want to be that. Watanabe wanted to call the shots but Pour Lui didn't let him. He merely made songs for and did general management. Everything else was under Pour Lui's belt. The entire point of BiS was to shit on everything you just tried to say they were a part of. Now I'm obviously just conspiring here, but there's a lot of reason to believe that half the reason they broke up was because Watanabe was just starting up WACK and wanted to take control, push them towards actually getting to Budokan. Lui and the others didn't want shit to do with that so she decided to call it quits and start over with Lui Frontic (it should also be noted that a good few of them are all indeed punk; Pour Lui has admitted to being a pretty big Black Flag fan and Megumi is extremely close friends with Seiko Oomori, who's arguably the most punk thing happening in Japan since BiS ended). This is also the "creative difference" that lead Pla2me to break up and become POP; Mari didn't want WACK to take control, and we can see that he did EXACTLY that with POP's new direction. That greedy fuck is trying to take any group he can to Budokan and he's willing to completely fuck his credibility for it (with recent "no fun allowed" rules). It's okay to be wrong as long as you learn from it, but yeah, you're wrong. All of these new idol-subcultures and groups in this whole anti-idol scene are definitely just regular idols with less restriction. I fucking love BELLRING Girls Heart and Rhymeberry as much as the next guy, but they're totally manufactured. Who gives a fuck? They're good and they put on a great show and vibe. BiS wasn't manufactured though. BiS was Pour Lui's fucking baby and she didn't want anyone to shit on that.
