I like how Chris was like, The original engine's water pump was $2500, so we decided to go with the 15,000 Texas Speed engine
@TheBigdaddyslimtim

Yeah but water pump costs 1/6 of the entire engine cost. That's crazy value
@ramair325
@ramair325 9 ай бұрын
considering a wp for a chev 350 is around $50 you can imagine how much the rest of that original engine would have cost. most diesel engines out of big trucks are over 35,000 i'd say 15,000 is pretty affordable.

And no parts to be found anywhere. So I think swapping the engine completely is a good deal long term
@dappermanphoto
@dappermanphoto 9 ай бұрын
Texas Speed partially sponsored the motors IIRC so he probably paid little to nothing for them. Also, going off what others said, it becomes unfeasible to pay high prices for rare parts for engines that aren't produced anymore. You'll spend that 15k in a season easy on old hardware with no support. Especially on a boat that big. Labor isn't cheap either. My source is I literally do this for work, and I have for half a decade.

About a bazillion times more than it would have cost to do a little basic maintenance on the original engines before setting off at high speed for the 1st time and destroying perfectly good engines unnecessarily.

The v8 cummins (903) has a scant following among truckers, so you probably could have bought a running 903 powered semi for $10k or less, used the engine and sold the remainder. Of course, the Bradley fighting vehicle uses the 903, so surplus engines would have been available. Or re-powered with common Big cam 855 Cummins, or perhaps two Duramax diesels. The transmissions would not have been necessary.

I love this project, it's different. Let's be honest most of the builds on this channel are different. When a build is started I'm ashamed to say some of the time I'm like there is no way this thing is going to get finished let alone look like what it's designed to look like.Then, i'm blown away by the finished product. Now 3 to 5 to 7, 8, 9 crazy builds later and I'm following a long the journey to the end because I know these things are going to be awesome! And they always are! Kudos to the problem solving and the determination to build these crazy projects. And most importantly, beating cancer. A lot of people aren't so lucky. F**k Cancer. Bravo guys, well done on another one. B is for Betting on yourself!

As long as you are happy with it Chris it doesn't matter if you put a million dollars in the rebuild, the only thing that mallers is the smile it puts on your face because that is priceless! Something to smile about these days are few and far between!! But i still think you should have went with 2 dodge cummins 6 cylinder diesel engine or 2 ford powerstroke diesel engines for the torque and fuel mileage, i wonder what the cost would have been if you went that route?

Crusaders are PCM engines, PCM is Pleasurecraft. Although Mercury does build LS motors, they tend to only do 7.0L racing LS7's for championship boats. PCM makes decent stuff but they're slowly disappearing it seems. (I've been a marine technician for about 4 years.) The 5.7 that mercury uses is not an LS block. Just free info for the crowd that cares to learn.

I so love this series! (something said many times by the net), and a sarcastic reply to the vast majority . Chris and his team are one of a kind, acknowledged.. Can you imagine those that would invest on something like this and die a quarter way through, if that? We have ALL judged Chris on the decisions to keep the project afloat. Determination and (let's be honest) a foresight on a return, gave us this entertainment. Good on you Chris. The sheer demeanor in your closings of the video is SO REAL. THAT, is why I enjoy this series. If it were me driving that thing home, seeing Chelsea on the bow going home, enjoying the timeout with my partner is what would have ligitimized the hurt and burden if it were me. At least a bit.. Chris, your willingness to make the jump on a project is something that a lot of us (including me) would like to experience but either just dont or cant. You have just done it so many times that I just can't stop watching. Thanks for ride.

What matters is that it’s what you wanted in the end. I will say for reliability sakes I would ditch the dual throttle body intakes for something like a Holley high ram with a big single just to eliminate the extra bits that could cause running issues and please revisit putting mechanical raw water pumps on the engines, if this were a much smaller lake boat I’d say they would be okay but in blue water I could never trust them with out flow meters and having several extra waiting for one of them to eventually fail. But seriously this project has turned out way better than I though it would and I’m glad that you are happy with it no matter the cost.

It still would have been much better to fix the broken engine no matter how much it costs. As it stands it was like 2 years wait to get these new engines in the boat and you could have done the diesels engines and had the boat back to OEM. You still don't know if the props are working properly with the new setup plus the loss of ballast.

I think the views generated by it being a Texas Speed engine swap probably outweigh the benefits of having an OEM engine. Plus the parts availability, aftermarket support, and the peace of mind of a known platform for a non-boat person is pretty compelling. And look at the channel. How many projects do they work on that are factory restorations vs. engine swaps and modifications? As for the ballast, that's a good one. He probably lost around a ton swapping to the much smaller/lighter LS engines. Filling the bilge with 2000 lbs of lead seems... sub-optimal.

Typically fuel consumption for boats like that is gallons per hour. That’s usually why diesels are preferred for heavier boats. The monster LS mills in yours are sick though.
