I just have to ask - why wasn't the boat winterized back in the fall? But for a few gallons of antifreeze nothing would have happened. Also, keep all of the seacocks closed when not using for extended periods. If you can't close the seacocks take the boat out of the water and fix them. I used to winterize my boats myself and if I couldn't do it I paid to have it done. The engines got water in them so they are toast unless they are pickled as soon as they are taken out of the water. The electric wiring is done because it absorbs water and corrodes. So, basically all you have left is a fiberglass shell that will be sold by the insurance company for peanuts.

If you decide to keep it, instead of putting it in storage at a yard like you had, consider getting a used trailer and just putting it in your shop. A trailer will be expensive, but depending on how long you need it, will probably pay for itself over storage at a drydock.

Hi, sorry about you boat. Hope it will turn it good. I can tell what wee do in Norway in the freezing winter. Engine: ALL inlet/outlet below waterline have shutoff valve. Main engine inlet has a Vale to add a hose coupling. We shut off sea water and add a hose, put the hose in a bucket of 50/50 coolant/water. Then start the engines. When you see coolant come out of the exhaust, stop engine. Now you have a coolant filled heat exchanger, hoses and filers. Now it won't freez an crack. Even old italian plastic. Drinking water: just open the tap an drain as much as possible, turn off pressure pump, leave all the taps open, toilet, empty and add antifreeze down the toilet. Just reach out if you need more details.

The best part is going to be when he finds out that the diesel engines were 80% of the value. The core charge on the diesel engines is more than the new cost of the LSX engines. Plus, yachts of that size with gas engines have no resale at all, so the insurance isn’t going to pay him squat. He literally paid over $100,000 to lower the value of the yacht to $10,000. If it’s over 36 feet long and isn’t a center console with outboards, it only has value with diesel engines. Plus, since those LSX engines are not marine rated, his insurance doesn’t even have to cover him at all. Using automotive parts in a yacht is a big problem, and is more than enough reason for his insurance to just laugh at him and pay nothing. If they pay him $10,000, they are being nice.
@IceAce1
@IceAce1 8 ай бұрын
@@adamr9215I'm not sure I get your sarcasm, but he talked about the high diesel engine replacement costs. It's what made him figure the alternative with LSX for his case, so thankfully this won't be a surprise for Chris.

@adamr9215 8 ай бұрын
@@IceAce1 I don’t think you understand. It was worth more with 2 broken diesel engines than with 2 new gas engines. Plus, those LSX engine aren’t marine rated, so the insurance doesn’t have to pay him anything. He put over $100,000 into that boat and since it was done wrong, all he did was lower the value to nothing. It was only worth $5-10,000 after all the work. He seems to think that since he paid $100,000 for the engines, he is going to get that much back, but he isn’t. He will be lucky if he gets $10,000.

@@adamr9215 Honestly, I'm not interested enough in the monetary values, but certainly know/agree it would have brought more value to stick to original parts. We'll see what happens. How amazing would it have been if Chris's insurance agent was proactive and in touch with the yacht being a restoration/upgrade property? They could have been soliciting a revaluation or maybe at least sending reminders to winterize the boats. Is this a joke? I used to watch your channel religiously.... KZbinr buys boat, boat gets new motors or something, boat sinks. I'm thinking insurance fraud. Especially since you, "Might know" how it happened.

Something similar happened to my buddy’s 73ft dive boat happened here in FL. The guy who was repairing the wood on the back deck forgot to cut scupper drain holes and it started raining heavily for days , it weighed the back down and the waterline allowed for the water to flow in faster than the bilge pump could handle , which ultimately killed/tripped the shore power line since bilge overheated. And from there it sank quick. Luckily he had seatow that saved him 20-30k in recovery and fuel mitigation fees.

Sorry to See that this happened. Didnt know, its getting this cold over there. No heating in the boat while freezing temperatur. Maybe the water intake was freezing and busting the pipe 😢. Daemn; so much work has to be done again. Was excited to see upcoming new solutions for your speed (Propeller) issue. Sorry for this desaster

I specialise in boat repair, especially sinkers and boat fires. If that is salt water that it has sat in for multiple days, that will be an absolute nightmare to repair. The salt will corrode all the wiring which means a full rewire, the engine bores will be rusty and all the fluid lines too. If youre determined i would pressure wash the entire boat inside and out with fresh water to get rid of as much salt as possible then leave the boat to dry out until summer as even though it is GRP the foam core will be compromised somewhere and the water will leach in, I can guarantee you that. Maybe if you can get the engine out do that ASAP and strip it down to clean it. Not impossible to repair, but a full rewire while the furniture is all in situ will be a PITA. Not to mention tracking down period parts. Good Luck!

Bring it home for a restoration at home where you can store it and work on it without the drive, if you have the space. Yes, having it transported is going to cost a mint, but considering how much it costs to store it at the marina, the drive back and forth, etc. it may very well be worth it having it closer to the shop/home with easy access.

I'm so sorry to see this happened to you. With your talent and positive attitude, you should rebuild it. I have rebuilt a hurricane salvage boat that sank in saltwater. Your boat sank in freshwater correct? Engines can be rebuilt. Electronics will be lost. Dont be too hard on yourself. Hang in there.

I don't think it would have sank if it still had diesel engines. Some reading between the lines is in order, the boat was already a write-off as soon as the gas engines went in, now it is official. (Hopefully you learn something)

I helped a friend raise his boat from the bottom of the Willamette and re-float it. It was powered by a low-tech Chrysler Hemi. The boat sunk because of a leaky propeller shaft seal. Once he dried it out, and changed the fluids, he started then engine, and it ran as well as ever. The onboard electronics all had to be rinsed in denatured alcohol and blow-dried, but everything survived. Hope you can do the same.

Was gutted to see what happened. Having seen the cause in future episode, I’m so glad that it happened in the dock without anyone on board. It’s probably remote, but at least you and “family” weren’t out in deep water and on board, that would have been a much worse place. It’s damage that can be fixed other than what can’t.

Even though it’s fiberglass need to check the transom and the floor those older boats used wood timbers and capped it over with fiberglass make sure you get all that moisture out so your timbers don’t rot

I just want to echo the comments about your positive, can-do attitude. You have always been a great example of how to handle hardship. I know your channel is about rebuilding and modifying so fixing the boat aligns with that. I think we would also understand if you found some other purpose for those twin LS engines, if they can be saved.

Yea, removing the diesel engines for gas is going to cost you 80%. The resale would be so low with gas engines that you would get almost nothing out of it. The insurance knows that and they aren’t going to pay you for lowering the value. The boat was worth more with bad diesel engines than brand new gas engines. The core charges of those diesel engines is more than those LSX engines cost new.

In Auckland NZ we had a similar axcident, a boat with a restaurant in Auckland harbour sank. the then owner got all Auckland scools to donate milk bottels which were fild with air from local divers. this eventualy re floated the boat so it could be repared. saving the coast of it being salvaged by a commercial company.

I also feeling sad for you and the B is for Build team. The Mariner team did excellent with re-floating the boat. Good work and effort on finding and securing the leakage and soars thereof. Please do not attempt to start the two engines. They will have water be taken in from the intakes, exhausts and dip sticks. You are good in identifying various weak points and ideas in better and preventing the. Good luck on further fixing/building the boat.
