Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable ~ said Bernard Shaw. And this totally sums up most of our travels.
As part of our quest to see the “seeable” places of South Bengal over idle weekends, we pushed a little further to Bishnupur.
But for its beautifully made terracotta temples (approximately 30 in all), Bishnupur town would have been a very insignificant, obscure and impoverished little town in the industrially backward Bankura district.
The Malla kings, who ruled a part of West Bengal between Burdwan and Purulia, were patrons of Vaishanavism. They invited scholars and artists from all over to Bishnupur. Much of this richness is reflected in the terracotta temples that stand tall even today. Hence the name ‘Bishnupur’ in local parlance - and were built across 700 years, from the 10th to the 17th centuries.
