I love love your videos I've been trying to make and authentic 1860s corset all by scratch and every thing I find on the web just leaves me with more questions and you have seemed to answer them all I just wished I had found these videos last October when I first attempted to make a corset. It did not turn out like I had wanted but I'm am sure my second attempted will be a lot better all because of these videos. Thank you.

This was VERY helpful as I'm currently in the works on my first official corset, and was not sure how to sew the inner lining and the fashion fabric pieces. Your tutorials are seriously amazing, and oh so helpful! Thank you so much!

Thanks so much! I've heard the term "stitch in the ditch" for a long time, but this is the first time I've had it truly explained so that I understand what it really is :)

I'm doing a sewing course currently and to pass our assessments, we're allowed to be out by no more than half a mm, so 3mm seems like a lot to me xD Also, my sewing machine at course is the same model as yours, and I love it!

Thank you for the quick reply! I thought for some reason that sewing in the waist-tape makes it visible on the lining side or the fashion side so I thought pre-attatching it would avoid that. I was watching your videos late last night so I didn't pick up everything. Things are making sense now! :D

I am taking a textile design class and i had no idea what stitching in the ditch was for like, 4 weeks. but thanks, i get it now!

there is a presser foot that you can get, quilt makers use them that is a 'ditch foot' . it has a metal 'blade' of sorts that sits in the ditch and keeps the fabric and needle allighned.

Hello lucy! I was wondering if it's acceptable to attach the waist tape to the stength fabric prior to flatlining it to fashion fabric?

hi Lucy! i love your videos but the waist tape confused me a bit, if you had the #six panels together before you basted your tape in, then how are you avoiding your stitches showing on the front facing fabric/able to flip the corset right sides out?

What type of thread do you use on your corsets? Silk or all purpose?

Hi Lucy, Do you think the ditch stitching could just be hand basted instead (to keep the two layers perfectly aligned but without the potential of machining showing outside of the ditch on the lining side), and then boning channels machined and the bones slipped into the channels created by the seam allowance. In this way the need for machine ditch stitching (and the possibility of wobbles on the underside that goes with that) would be eliminated wouldn't it?

+Cara Killer Yes, stitching in the ditch can be done by hand. :) I know a few corsetieres who still do this. The seam shouldn't be tension-bearing. Usually one would go on to machine stitch the boning channels after, and this would support any wayward pulling anyway. :)

+Lucy's Corsetry Well I won't stitch in the ditch by hand on my current corset, as the fashion fabric and lining fabrics are very different colours and I don't really want the stitches to show, even on the inside. I was just considering temporarily basting, so that the subsequent single line of bone channel stitching would be perfectly parallel to the seam, inside and out. Then I was thinking of removing the basting and leaving it at that. (I take your point about stability and if it looks as though it needs it I could then ditch stitch directly over my hand basting).

hi, when sewing in the curves do you think I should clip out the curves to be more smoth? There was a time that i didn't clip out, but now i started to clip and still isn't that smoth as i wanted...what's your advice? I do boning channels the same way of the video. tks
@LucysCorsetry8 жыл бұрын
Hi Juliana, yes clipping curves is very helpful - but if you're going to be using the seam allowances for your boning channels, just be sure to be careful when sliding the bones in, because if you mis-insert the bones it can slip through the gap where you clipped. But generally speaking once the bone is securely inserted, it's not going to slip out where you clipped because the bone runs the entire length of the channel and most of the clipping is done near the waistline. :)
