You can blame others and rightly so sometimes for an act or lack of acting to cause other types of pain but not so with disease like say ALS or Huntingtons disease, Parkinsons and on and on. Mercy is the key to Love. I’ve been trying to imitate Christ as the Sun of Justice. I was manifesting qualities of vengeance, anger and retribution. That isn’t Justice. That is merely its shadow. I see now that suffering of the Sacred Heart on the cross gave God an infinite understanding and thus an infinite mercy welled up to meet it. He calls us to be instruments of that Mercy, that is truly the Just path. “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.” This an immense teaching. Bless you. 🙏🏻

This post really spoke to me. Often I have thought - yes, Jesus suffered horribly for a few days, but there are people who endure pain and suffering for years - decades - lifetimes. Forgive me, sometimes I have minimized Jesus’ suffering. Thinking a few days of horrible suffering would be easier than the trial of years of constant suffering. It’s easy to make Jesus a character in a story without appreciating the wholeness of his humanity. In addition to the excruciating physical pain of the cross, Jesus did suffer mental, spiritual, emotional pain - loneliness, betrayal by his friends and feeling abandoned from God- his Father. The pain of seeing his mother and friends suffering and grief at his death. He probably suffered the knowledge of the horrible sacrifice he would have to make throughout his lifetime. His mother surely knew. The important thing to remember that as God, he did not have to endure any of it. He could have opted out. He CHOSE to suffer FOR US. “For God so LOVED the world, that He gave his only begotten Son. That whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 Thank you again for much needed perspective. I see more clearly why the saints meditate on the cross so much; why stigmata is a grace of remembrance. To know God’s Love is real, we must dwell in Christ’s suffering AND that HE CHOSE IT - for LOVE OF US.

Don't get sucked into Eastern "Orthodoxy" like I did. Big mistake and a waste of time. They're a false sect that rejects the Papacy and supremacy of jurisdiction conferred upon it by Christ. They make a distinction between God's essence and energies, saying that the former surpasses the latter and is without beginning while some of the energies are created and others uncreated yet are somehow both fully God, which means they believe in two distinct gods, thus breaking up the Trinity and teaching polytheism. They also reject the Filioque and allow divorce and remarriage, which is a contradiction of Christ's teaching in the Gospel, and they also deny the Immaculate Conception among other things. Christ suffered 3 types of human pain, but as God, God also experienced this pain but "wraps up" our sin as God is without sin, since sin means to be away from Him.

Those suffering often act towards those not suffering as if they were the cause even if they are just living their life. Those in sin see an accusation by those not living in sin even if all they want is to live their life freely.

Bishop Sheen used to say something to the effect- if you need wisdom or advice go to someone who is suffering, the greater the suffering the better the wisdom. Interesting way of preaching to communities, he makes a contrast between the gospel and the social situations that every community experiences as part of daily life. He stablishes a relationship between the cross and common social sufferings. In a way Christianity is also political or at least it gathers people around political communities. The suffering of Jesus corresponds to the transgressions he supposedly committed and that was judged for, even the drink of vinegar and gail they gave to him while on the cross had a meaning and a purpose as part of histrial and punishment. In Greek the word cross is translated as Post, a single and vertical post. And crucifixion is translated as the action of placing the post inside a hole in the groud.

Chris Jordan From what I've heard him say about Orthodoxy, he focuses on the role of suffering in redemption. That's basically what Catholics believe in too, except Orthodox folks live this truth better than most Catholics which is a shame. He doesn't say that Orthodox Trinity makes more sense, and local patriarchies than the Bishop of Rome. So, basically he could be Catholic.

If pain is in relation to sin then the Christ suffered not on the cross, for he is without sin, The Power of the Cross is to reveal sinless man, divine love for his enemy, thus forgive them father for they know not what they do, To suffer as a murderer or a thief is one thing to suffer for love is another, if I am betrayed by someone whom I have trusted, then my suffering does not come from my betrayer, it comes due to my ignorance, and this is why so many people suffer, out of ignorance Where your treasure is there your heart will be also, if you have your heart on what is perishable, when is perishes so does your heart. Let's look at the prodigal son and the fall. Prodigal son lives with his father in his house as humanity (Adam & Eve) lived with God in the garden of Eden. Prodigal son claims inheritance and autonomy and leaves his father's house. Humanity claims autonomy by breaking God's command by eating the fruit and leave the garden as a consequence. The prodigal son is now away from home where he had everything he needed and suffers hunger after wasting his inheritance. Humanity is away from the garden, Paradise is our natural habitat. So we suffer a great hunger, a great pain because we are now in the wilderness.

Seeking a book or other media explanation: how does Christ take away sin & death when both are still with us? I can grasp Christ as the hero archetype -- worthy of emulation -- but when it comes to this resurrection as proof that *we* are absolved of sin/death...it's either more complicated than a 10 min video can cover or I'm hitting a barrier & can't see around it.

One has to understand the cross in light of the resurrection. That total event shows that God's love is greater than both sin and death.

@@BishopBarronThe resurrection acts as proof that Jesus' methods/teachings are the revised edition of the covenant, one based on love, along with works. This contrasts with the old covenant, merely going through the motions, with one's intention being to "earn my way," (obedience is all; intentions/love not relevant.) Sin and death persist, but they are, in the grand scheme of things, overcome by acting in this new way. Am I close?

Came across to me, in emphasis, that the cart was somewhat before the horse: because Christ experienced/resolved pain therefore sin was mercifully resolved. Isn't it rather that because He mercifully resolved the sin problem, pain was / is therefore resolved?

How do you understand the idea of pain,sin and suffering resolved as we still have pain,sin and suffering ? I am not academic so i think of this language sort of as a mystery (dogma like) a sort of playing out of old testament prophecy. What I do take from it is that in my daily life, as I struggle with pain and suffering, if I link/offer them to Jesus and his suffering on the cross they become bearable. As for the resurrection it our great existintal hope. Happy easter, Jesus is risen.

I would say that sin is “resolved” in the sense that it is forgiven on account of Christ’s death. And also in the sense that it’s power has been broken. We are no longer obligated, if you will, to sin. While I agree that physical pain will only be “resolved” upon death/being with the Lord, absent disobedience and perhaps ignorance of what Christ has done and does for us and my experience has been that all psychological and existential pain can be “resolved” here and now.

No, not anymore than any truth claim such as "The earth revolves around the sun" somehow is an arrogant thing to say to someone who doesn't believe it. It seems to me that truth claims made by anyone in any religion are not arrogant claims in and of themselves. It's people who get arrogant regarding what they happen to believe is true.

i thought a lot about that moment when Jesus in extreme pain prays to God to "forgive them, they dont know what are they doing"..Just try to imagine after and during so much pain any man could say something like that? especially 2000 years ago?! No way, only God could say and think like that...Some say "oh its just a story", oh really? you really think there is a genius or bunch of genius who could think of such an amazing story? 2000 years ago? come on, impossible, you can collect all the greatest literature work and all of them combine are not as powerful as Jesus story, it must be truth, its to crazy and powerful to be just a some story..i really think that moment when jesus prays on the cross for his murderers and traitors is THE most powerful and greatest moment in human history
