Friends, no indication whatsoever is given in Scripture that the moral prescriptions are somehow more important than the liturgical prescriptions. Being a good person is not enough-it’s crucially important to be aligned to God in his divine splendor through ritual and ceremony. My concern is, as our churches begin to open, that some may forget the vital importance and essentiality of the Mass.

I'm a student at Saint Louis University, and I found a great deal of comfort in how many of our Catholic students hungered for the Mass, and recognized how insufficient live-streamed Mass is. Now that we're back for the fall, students are filling up a bunch of reserved spots at Sunday Mass and still attending daily Mass. In my experience, being distant from the Mass may have actually increased desire and devotion for the liturgy in our community, not lessened it. (I may be looking at a small sample size, however.)

@@abhishekjoseph4198 I'm curious. How clearly can you receive that call? Will it be dependent on our decision or something like crystal clear realisation? It's difficult for me to understand how someone can be so sure of getting a message from God and that too a very specific message of priesthood/married life. If you know that you're sometimes feeling the effects of hormones (which is completely natural for a human) or your feelings swaying at times, does that mean that a call for priesthood is not possible? Or are you required to suppress those when such a vocation is discerned anyway? Is that not a heavy one? It's also written that it's not good for a man to be alone, right? This has always been a big topic to ponder for me. All that questions aside, I will surely pray for you brother.

Perhaps try these things to make the best of it? Offer thst yearning to Christ's Sacred Heart through the Immaculate Heart of our Blessed Mother. Let it be nailed to the Cross with our Blessed Lord, and so let God use it and shape it as He wills. This can be a great occassion for grace. Also study the Mass Readings and maybe listen to a reflection or two on them. Finally, at least participate virtually if you can, and make an Act of Spiritual Communion. These are at least what I have learned to do. I hope they can be of some help. God bless you. Remember, Christ is with us always and He is there with you in any struggle you are going through.

Spot on, Bishop! I think it is so vital in these times to continue to bring all that we're able to liturgically to the faithful. That may be in the form of a restricted indoor mass, an outdoor mass, or via live stream. Just because it may be difficult to set up mass outside doesn't mean you should skimp on the liturgy. Obviously we need to be prudent and safe, but show the people that we CARE about our mass. For me, it's making the live stream as beautiful as possible...to bring those at home that cannot come into the beauty of the liturgy through technology. It's taken a tremendous amount of work but my hope is that it creates that proper alignment that you spoke so clearly about here. These are unbelievably important days for our church, so let's do everything in our power to show the beauty of our churches to all who step foot through our doors, on our lawns, or on our websites.

The Holy Eucharist is a must for Catholics as you hinted in the end, and not having access to it could well be compromising one spiritually, ones progress too. When available, make the most of it. Wonderfully presented! Thank you, Bishop Barron. I am a confirmation catechist to young adults, and this video leads wonderfully into teaching the essential Holy Sacrifice of the mass. You mention that God in His Omnipotence is not in need of our human, earthly religious rituals; they exist for our own guidance or literal navigation to stay on the straight and narrow path that leads to Him. If I cease playing my guitar for years, then I've quit the necessary practice that keeps me skilled at playing it. Coincidentally, the formation of calluses (the mark of continued playing) fades and would disappear as would my faith if I stopped practicing it. If I stop attending holy mass or withdraw from the sacred rituals promulgated to bolster our faith and align us unto God, then I shall certainly lose my fervor and love of He that I worship. God is not in need of our human rituals which cannot satisfy his Godhead; henceforth, on the night before He died, Jesus instituted the New Covenant to replace the humanly sacrifice of the Old Covenant. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or the sacrificial offering of God unto Himself, transcends every human’s sacrifice offered in the entire history of our existence. This divine offering for adoration, thanksgiving, expiation, and supplication at every mass is the very essence of Catholicism.

You don’t even realize your belief in God is stronger than that of my own, because in your vehement hatred of Him you’ve consumed your life with willfully opposing Him. Why go out of your way to attack Him whom you don’t believe exists? It’s nonsensical. I pray for you. It’s a shame, really, because such zeal is to be found among the faithful. Each and every action, thing and word in our worship points, but not to itself but to reveal the truth of what we are doing. Worshiping God in Christ's perfect offering. Yes we need all the ritual, but not because we need ritual, but because we need that to which it points.

Exodus might be my best book in the bible by far because it takes us back to the basics of who we are, what we should do and what God expects of us. As the moral law is important to abide by so is the Liturgy. The examples Bishop Barron gave about the numerous ceremonial laws found in the book of Leviticus is a testament to that fact. Its so important that Nadab and Abihu bore the consequences for not adhering to it. The worship of the mass stems from the set up given in the book of Exodus and mirrors the worship in heaven (Hebrews 8:5). Moral laws keep us in line true, the liturgy helps tap into the grace of God to make sure that the moral is kept.

God knows we humans respond in kind to order, beauty, and truth. While reading through Exodus, I asked myself, why does God direct the Israelites in Exodus exactly how to make the Ark of the Covenant, exactly what the priests are to wear, how to build the Temple? Reading through the detailed designs, I wondered about the symbolism and significance of the imagery. I think, what was their experience of worship in the land of Egypt. What does History tell us about Egypt? Before traveling to Egypt, I took a semester long class in Egyptology. I admit, what I learned about Egypt was more confusing than informative. There was a lot of mythology. The Israelites, before the Exodus, would have seen the practices of worshop and ritual regularly in Egypt. They would have been around public Egyptian temples, observed the statues, the priests vestments, the palaces, pharaoh's vestments, and learned about the ways of offering sacrifices, both from Egypt and Mesopotamian cultures. The Egyptians were learning to eventually worship one God albeit the sun-god. In Egypt, there were beautiful, true and good things. In a similar way that Paul found seeds of God's truths in Greece when he pointed out the temple to the "unknown" god, Egyptian culture passed on to the Israelites some worthwhile forms of worship, the recording of knowledge, things written in stone, and offering of commonwealth in service of continuing their faith. God may have used Egypt to elevate Israel. Is it possible, God used these very effective Egyptian methods of worship, making use of the gold and etc. the Israelites had brought with them from Egypt (collected to make the gold calf) and making use of all their finery and allowing them to use it to observe their faith as a way to direct their worship to God? This question is not to diminish what God directed Moses and the Israelites to do. It is to ask, wouldn't God have allowed the Israelites to learn something of the beautiful, the true, and the good in Egypt and to use the things that they learned in the practice of their own faith? Maybe, when we place highest worth and importance and absolute trust in God, we benefit from these signs of the beautiful and the good and the true. Being in the presence of the Eucharist rather than merely seeing an image on a screen not only helps us by enhancing our experience, it also takes us out of our own environments and allows us to set aside everything else we might do otherwise. Both for ourselves and others, we experience God every time we attend by being present at the Mass, participating and foregoing anything else.

@@Ezekiel336-16 it makes some sense, what you are thinking. I can relate because I was in love with nature, natural habitats, the amazing variety of species of plants and animals, so much so that I devoted four years studying environmental policy and protection. For a long time, I was thinking a lot about how we are destroying our planet. Knowing that it is God's creation, that we are called to be good stewards, that these treasures are not only our inheritance, they are our responsibility. We are care-takers on behalf of future generations. Yet, not only that, also for God. Without separating this from our faith as Catholics, when I was reading what is written in Exodus about the designs of temple worship, I was really surprised to see the level of detail and found it puzzling. The Israelites were nomadic. They were from simple roots (read that to mean pre-agricultural) yet, they were influenced by their neighbors, both in Mesopotamia and Egypt. These cultures developed together, through trade, conquest and other exchanges. Later, when David's aid was suddenly struck dead for attempting to save the Ark from falling... that was also puzzling. That only made sense when reading Mary is the Ark of the Covenant. So, of course, God warned if someone other than a priest, who was unauthorized, deigned to lay a hand on The Ark... Imagine if that were Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Did the Ark represent The Holy Spirit, come to dwell with the Israelites? Or Christ before the Incarnation? Either was God. I imagine studies have given interpretations of the symbolism in the Ark. Maybe people have even tried to makes a study of the numerology as it relates to the dimensions and materials.

@@Ezekiel336-16 testing the spirits: one of three examples comes to mind. 1. Isaiah heard God speak in the still small voice rather than the wind and storm. 2. Job learned to rely on his trust in a just God. 3. Moses went ahead of God, in a sense, hitting the rock to bring forth water. He didn't heed God in his lack of discernment. polygamy: there were times when it was called for in order to give husbands to women that might otherwise be barren. The Israelites would have wanted to increase their numbers, not only to scale up their communities. There is a taboo about intermarriage, about allowing any false beliefs to creep into their culture and possibly contaminate their religious beliefs.

@@Ezekiel336-16 the examples I gave are precisely that. Isaiah listening, didn't hear God speaking except in the small voice. That is discernment. Job, while he was being tested, was also discerning the will of God. Moses, he had to learn to trust God over his own will. Jonah was running away from the will of God by not discerning. Discernment has a more general meaning. The Israelites often fell away as they were influenced, followed many other false Gods. Poor discernment at times. Yet, the prophets discerned well.

@@Ezekiel336-16 i didn't say they were pagan. My point is that the Jewish men had to take multiple wives to provide for unwed Jewish women and have more Jewish children if they could support them. These practices were more common generally.

What comes to me from this is that Liturgical formation is the necessary component to achieve holiness. Morality/ethics may lead to goodness, but without liturgy and worship holiness is impossible.
