As a Galvestonian all of the schools take you on a field trip and this is one of the places they take you . We were told that no nails were used on the floors. There are 15 fireplaces through out the mansion. All of the angels are the faces of the children that belonged to the owner of the mansion of which there were 9. It now belongs to Scared Heart Catholic Church which is located across the street.

Excellent video! Great camera work, as Susan said. If only architectures as beautiful as this one were still made in our modern times.

Great camera work. Most videos I see they go too fast and you can’t see anything. Fabulous mansion. The woodwork is beautiful. They don’t make houses like this anymore. Thanks for the video.

Hey everyone. I've just uploaded a video showing some bonus footage of the house that I didn't include in this video and some footage that I took in the house during Christmas. It shows a nice top down view of the rotunda staircase as well as close up shots of the dining room fireplace mantle and better shots showing the woodwork around the windows and a few extra shots of the library. I'm planning on shooting footage with a new camera better suited to low light and am considering making a documentary explaining the history of this house and Galveston. Until then I'm glad you have enjoyed this video and here is a link to the extra footage kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqjIn5mJaaekZ7s.

originally known as gresham's castle for atty gresham, his wife and 9 children. after approx. 35 or 40 years they sold it to the diocese. sacred heart church was across the street. the bishop lived there til the offices were moved to another city. since 1963 it was open to the public and the church uses the money generated to help fund the newman center at the UT medical school and to keep the house in its beautiful condition.

I believe that style to be Richardsonian, but whatever you call it it’s definitely a Palace. I’ve been there many times and it’s my favorite on Broadway Blvd.

Unbelievable. You have to wonder who the craftsmen were who did all that incredible woodwork. Stunning. Great camera work so that we can really appreciate it.

I appreciate your steady camera work and close-ups of the details in each room. As I'm familiar with most aspects of Victorian houses (and I follow League-Kemper House there in Galveston), I'm fine with no audio, as I can't stand the annoying modern music that often accompanies house tours. I love all of the dark wood, and the carvings in this home are really wonderful. So tastefully decorated. Glad to hear it is solid enough to stand up to hurricanes.

Oh you're not the only one. I also love and prefer Victorian architecture and style and I wish I owned this house. This house to me is basically perfect and I wouldn't change anything as it's built to my tastes exactly. I love the beautiful and ornate dark stained woodwork. I grew up about 15 minutes away from this house and visit it about once a year. Definitely visit it if you can. As good as this video is it simply can't do this house justice. It's so much larger and grander in person. You just have to experience it in person to get the true scale and beauty of it. The ceilings are 15 feet or more high. The top of the dome down to the rotunda staircase floor is 55 feet high. The house is over 19,000 square feet and it actually has a basement as well as fourth floor if you count the basement as floor one plus an attic on top of that. This video only shows 2 of the 4 floors. It's a huge house. Right now you can't enter the top floor because they are doing work on the roof. Otherwise I would have showed that as well. Overall, its an amazing house and you'll love seeing it. There is an nice RV park on Galveston island called Stella Mar as well as several others you may want to check out when you get your RV. I decided to upload a video showing a few bonus clips that I didn't show in this video and also some footage I took there during Christmas. It shoes a nice top down view of the staircase as well as some other things. Here is the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqjIn5mJaaekZ7s I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

I guess being a Catholic Bishop is a pretty sweet gig. One of the few buildings that survived the 1900 hurricane that killed about 10,000.

This was an excellent video. I want to thank you for taking this video. I really felt like I was there. I loved how slowly you viewed everything. I hope you do more mansions. Whole different era and life. There is nothing to houses today. Even if you have the money and buy a huge fancy house, they will never come close to the workmanship and materials used in these historic beauties.❤️

Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I definitely wanted to make sure that I viewed everything slowly and thoroughly so people could take a virtual tour of the house and feel like they were there. Sadly yes money can't buy you a house like this today and the craftsmanship and materials needed to make it doesn't exist anymore and it's now a lost art. It's amazing too when you think that the entire house was designed on paper and everything was hand made and was transported through ship, rail, and horses without electricity, computers, and internet. We have all that and can't make a beautiful house like this today. modern design is just sad and lazy. I will probably take videos of other mansions in the future. Just in case you didn't notice I did make a video of another mansion in Galveston. The link to it is here kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHWammOGm7KjoNk. I also have some extra footage of Bishop's Palace here if you'd like to see some more of the house. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqjIn5mJaaekZ7s

@@Brianls7 thank you so much for taking the time to reply and sending the links. I loved the bonus footage and appreciate all you have done to make your videos. I had not seen that other video but just loved those angels on the ceiling. They were beautiful. The workmanship is beyond beautiful. They really took Pride in what they did. It took special people to do the things they did. You couldn’t afford to pay anyone to do that craftsmanship today. So beautiful. Nothing compares today from those beauties of yesterday. I look forward to watching your videos. Enjoy your house tours.

Only a clergyman or a gangster could afford such an estate. You need to steal from the public in order to accumulate such immense wealth. Such estates should be used as schools, orphanages, community homes for the homeless, animal hotels or animal cafes, homes for old people and what have you.

It would be nice for an audio description of certain characteristics of a particular room, anecdotes from the past about the house, room, special features, etc. This would make it more enjoyable, much like a good guide that accentuates what you may see, but not pick up on.

I'm seriously considering doing that and making a documentary on Galveston history but I need to do more research first. I need to know more not just about the history of the house but also the architecture and construction of the house. For example two of the fireplace mantels came from worlds fairs and the one in the parlor won first place at the Philadelphia worlds fair. One was made in 1876 and the other in 1886. So there are many interesting things about this house. I'm also planning on upgrading my camera because this house is very difficult to shoot video in as its very dark and mainly lit by windows. So when I get a new camera and finish my research then yes I will try and make maybe a 1+ hour long documentary in very high quality.

Those bishops lived well, didn’t they? On whose dime? This home is ostentatious to the point of absurdity! It really is a vulgar display of wealth. Victorian homes of that era were usually more austere. Some of the wordwork and stained glass are gorgeous, but so much of it? I wonder how many poor people sacrificed to make this happen, and it breaks my heart.

Always amazing how the churches who are constantly begging for money and pay no taxes can afford to buy places like this. Yet will not part with funds to help the poor. Religious institutions should not be blowing billions of $$$$$$$ to live like they are better and above everyone else.

It would have been a much better video if there were some narrative parts to it. To me it's just a video that keeps moving up and down and up and down, from room to room. Ugh! I learned nothing in the first 4 minutes so I clicked off.
