*FAQ* *Q: How quick do you type if you practice and use a keyboard you’re comfortable with? A:* In July 2017 I went to www.typingtest.com/ . It should be a more accurate test than WSpeed, because WSpeed timings can be highly skewed due to emulation differences in DOSBox. My best of three on the 1-minute Aesop's Fables was 586 chars in 1 minute (117 WPM). For the 5-minute Enchanted Type-Writer test, my best of two was 2576 chars in 5 minutes (103 WPM) and one error. It would have been higher, but at one point the text I was typing and text it was comparing went out of sync by 1 word (because I had typed "to- day" and it required "to-day"), and I had to backspace several lines to restart from the desync point in order to continue the stupid test - stupid for not allowing you to insert corrections without deleting text. *Q: You HAVE played WSpeed before. Your name appears in the highscores. Were you lying? A:* I created WSpeed in 1998. Of course I have tested the game. One does not develop a game and never try it out. Otherwise it would be buggy as a spider web. But check the _datetimes_ in the highscore listing. They are _all_ more than 15 years old. In the video, I said I have “not trained at all”. Does my game testing 15 years ago count as practice for the video? I think not. *Q: How do I acquire or run WSpeed? A:* Read the video description, all that information is there. Many content creators put useful information in the video description, and it is sad if nobody reads it. *Q: The speed readings from WSpeed don’t look correct to me. A:* WSpeed was written for DOS systems, for the i486 era computers. DOSBox by default emulates a 286 era computer, but its timings can be adjusted freely. It can even emulate a computer that is faster than what you have. This emulation scheme means that the clock within DOSBox is _not synced_ to your host computer clock. And this desynchronization unfortunately means that _WSpeed can not measure accurately_ your typing speed (when run under DOSBox), unless it is ported to a modern OS. It is now just a fun little game. For more accurate readings of my typing speed, read the top of this FAQ. *Q: Is WSpeed a clone of ‹product›? A:* WSpeed, written in or before July 1998, is a directly inspired clone of _ZTSpeed._ ZTSpeed, also known as Zorlim’s Speed Test, was written in 1994 by Sami Lehtinen (Zorlim), best known for creating _Pizza Worm._ Ztspeed has inspired a few other clones as well, notably _typespeed._ *Q: Words-Per-Minute for the win. A:* Words per minute is a silly stupid measure that should never be used. A little thought experiment illustrates that clearly. If you can type 100 times ‘epäjärjestelmällistyttämättömyydellänsäkään’ in a minute (without copypasting), you are a miracle. If you can type ‘a’ or ‘I’ 100 times in a minute, that’s not even worth raising an eyebrow for. Yet, both would be equally measured “100 WPM”. While these are exaggerated examples, the fact is that different languages have different length words. Even different specialty fields have different length words. For example, the medical field in English has much longer words by average than say, car mechanics does. Measuring WPM gives one locale an unfair advantage or disadvantage over the other. But what is the one thing that all words are composed of? _Letters._ Even if you are typing an article composed of words, you are typing letters. No matter which latin-alphabet-based language you are typing on the keyboard, you are always typing letters. And mechanically, typing a 10-letter word like “typewriter” is twice as much work as typing a 5-letter word like “could” is. All _words are not equal. Characters: are._ A letters-per-minute or characters-per-ten-minutes measure is fair and just. A words-per-minute is ambiguous and meaningless without context. Therefore I will proceed to mock anyone who only posts a WPM measure that is inherently context-dependent and meaningless. Use a CPM (characters-per-minute) or similar for _fair_ comparisons. *Q: But there are languages that do not use letters. A:* True. I have no idea what is the standard way to profile typing speed in Chinese for instance. *Q: Not all characters are equal. There are languages where you must press several keys to produce a single accented character. A:* True… But that does not make _words_ any bit fairer. *Q: But WPM is standardized and always means 5 CPM. A:* _If_ that is the case and it actually means fifths of CPM, why not use CPM directly? It would be less ambiguous and less misleading. *Q: Why are most of the English words in WSpeed adverbs ending in -ly? A:* You are wrong. Only 34% of them are! 😐 This is because I sampled the list of adverbs from BatMUD into the wordlist. *Q: Voluptuously means… A:* I know. It is not the meaning that took me by surprise, it was the odd sequence of letters (typing game, remember). One expects a word like “momentous”, and suddenly there is this extra “u” in the middle of the word for no apparent reason. “Mo-men-tuous”…? *Q: Intendly is not a word. A:* I know. I copied a spelling mistake 20 years ago from BatMUD and I did not fix it before I made this video. -For the record, BatMUD still has the typo, even though unlike WSpeed, it is still being actively developed and played by hundreds of concurrent players.- Check it out! bat.org/ The same goes for _sothingly,_ I think, but BatMUD no longer has that one. EDIT: In 1/2020 they fixed it finally. The typo was replaced with two new words: “intendedly” and “intently”. *Q: Jojo? Poro? Kela? Reference game on point? A:* These are actually Finnish words (meaning yo-yo, reindeer, and a roll respectively). *Q: What is that editor? A:* You are asking in the wrong video. I do not even use an editor in this video! *Q: What is that music? Can I download it? Or listen to it somewhere? A:* I made all of it myself. Check out iki.fi/bisqwit/music/ and soundcloud.com/Bisqwit. *Q: Are you sure? I recognize it from somewhere. A:* I may have drawn inspiration heavily from some Famicom games. Particularly, Lunar Ball and Balloon Fight. *Q: Who are you and why should I care? Where are you from? A:* Nice to meet you! I am Bisqwit, from Finland. I do programming and gaming videos on KZbin, but you may know me for a number of other endeavors over the decades. And if this is the first time, then, hello! *Q: Why was this video in my recommendations? A:* My guess is KZbin figured you might like my channel, and it chose this video to probe your reaction. Check out my other videos. *Q: Are you really a bus driver? A:* Yes, I _have_ driven a coach for work. It was lots of fun! But now, right now I do embedded programming for my primary work. I deal mostly with custom hardware containing STM32 chips. I also earn token amounts of extra money by teaching Israeli folk dance. If you are not reading this comment in May 2017, there is a possibility the situation is different again. *Q: “Dance”?! I totally did not expect that. A:* Me neither, to be honest. It sort of happened, and I thank God for every moment of it. Been doing it since 2009. I have even taught in other countries. (I don’t do it in KZbin because the music industry has weaponized copyright.) *Q: I type faster than you. A:* That is not a question. *Q: No but I mean, why post this video when you are not really that remarkable at typing? A:* Indeed I don’t hold any records. People were wondering because of my other videos, so I made this video to answer that question to my subscribers. *Q: What is that accent? Why do you speak like a robot? A:* The short answer is, I don’t. The long answer is: My native language is Finnish. Finnish is _very_ far-removed from English by nearly every linguistic measure. Trace the path from Finnish to English in this tree, www.sssscomic.com/comic.php?page=196, to get a (simplified) idea why most Finnish speakers have a very distinct “accent” when they try to speak English. The phonemes that a person can learn to tell apart are almost completely determined by their infanthood experiences, but I did not have much exposure to foreign languages as a child. The school system focuses almost exclusively on written communication, too. The English language has a very different (and more complex) phonetic makeup than Finnish does. I have tried to catch up at adult age, but it is much slower because the adult brain is not as adaptive as children’s is. _Trying_ to act natural is not a perfect substitute for acting natural, and the latter is not an option when you have to consciously concentrate on making yourself understood. Trust me, I am honestly trying my best, but at least I have a scientific excuse.¹ *Q: You sound like… A:* I don’t care. Chances are I have never heard of them nor do I want to. *Q: Do you do ASMR? A:* No, I don’t. Frankly I don’t get the appeal (although I have theories). My sister does, though. kzbin.infoVideos *Q: Your FAQ looks like you are persistently edgy. A:* No I’m not. Seriously, I’m cool as a moose. Many Finns (not all tbf) just have naturally a straightforward and terse style of communication that lends itself well to deadpan humor. We don’t beat around the bush. Just listen to Finnish Formula-1 drivers for example. *Q: TL/DR. I’m just going to post my thoughts. A:* You are welcome! But if you post a question I have already answered many times, I will probably give you a few days or years of time to find and read the answer I have already given. ¹) _Neuroscience, 3rd edition,_ pp. 559-562.

Bisqwit has probably created the only typing trainer software that actually works. This software puts real pressure on you and therefore your brain has to adapt. Plus the fact that it automatically scales speed and adapts the flow to the user's speed, this thing is the best someone can use to improve at typing. I've got from 92WPM average to 103WPM (I've tested on 10fastfingers after) average in just 5-7 Hours with long breaks.

well played, and I completely agree that wpm is a stupid measure of typing speed.
@kim157427 жыл бұрын
There's always CPM, which you can get to WPM from by dividing by 5, since that's the average length of a word
@krokanjer7 жыл бұрын
Average is not exact, and that's the problem for most people.
@F4Y5417 жыл бұрын
gooby I agree, wpm isn't as accurate as I used to think it was... Heck, it isn't accurate at all! CPM for the win, it's unfair how many typists test their speed with wpm, I can't imagine how fast Bisquit was with 1000+ cpm....
@Interknetz7 жыл бұрын
See (for those that don't know), WPM is dumb because you could type Box a load of times and have a high WPM. CPM definitely makes more sense.

Out of swedish, finnish and english I type the fastest using english, I suppose it's mostly due to how awkward it is to reach åäö on a nordic keyboard compared to the regular qwerty layout where most frequently used keys are centered.

Nice to see another video from you Bisqwit. This could be made into a kids typing game if you added little wings to the words and had a frog that moved his tongue and ate them as you got them correct. :) Have you been frustrated with adult responsibility cutting into programming time? I guess maybe you get good ideas while driving bus. I found that when I did hard physical work I could program after work much more easily than when I was a cog in a corporate machine. Nice to see people making traditional software like you. I can't stand the fickleness of web development.

Most Finns recognize me as a Finnish person right away from this video and others, so it is clear that I do still have some Finnish accent. However, it is far from the stereotypical one that you hear from guys like Mika Häkkinen or Sauli Niinistö. I have done a lot of practice over the years with conscious attention towards phonemes that Finnish people usually don’t get right, and I align myself mostly towards the British style.
