Prince wrote it... recorded it... gave it to The Family (vocals by St. Paul Peterson) on the Paisley Park label in 1985. Sinead then did her cover & made it famous. Prince reclaimed it by doing live version with Rosie Gaines. Then after his death we finally got to hear his original studio version.

Prince is one of the all time greats. Saw him live once and he sounds identical live to how he is on record. Truly a one of a kind. He supposedly could play 27 instruments and was entirely self taught. If you are gonna react to his songs, Purple rain is a must, but When Doves Cry is another killer. Oh, and there are two studio versions sung by Prince. There is the version he did which is probably the official video you saw on here and then there is also the version he recorded as part of the band The Family. Both versions are very different, and completely different to this live version. Worth listening to them all.

Prince was born Prince Rogers Nelson from Minnesota... he was first signed as a teenager and released his first record 'For you' in 1978, on which he wrote, produced and played all the music (27 instruments! 😲) ... He was very meticulous when putting live bands together to perform his music, and would rehearse endlessly w/ the bands he formed - Prince & The Revolution and Prince & The New Power Generation (N.P.G.) ... His whole life revolved around music & writing songs, and that affected his personal relationships... He was shy, quiet and music was his way of expressing himself almost entirely. He wrote so many songs that he would keep in a vault... much of it was never released to the public. He would also cultivate musical talents to perform on his records in the studio and in concerts. What made Prince a star was his showmanship... his ability to dance, perform live, and project a personality visually that made him an icon for decades. He was up there w/ Michael Jackson for his ability to entertain. It was sad that he went down the path of prescription drug abuse, which eventually took his life in 2016 at age 57... Prince also starred in his own movies, the biggest being 'Purple Rain' in 1984. Just a warning: Prince reactions may not be possible due to copyrights. His estate is strict on those. U could try live performances 😁 I can suggest a few Prince songs - "When doves cry"... "Sign O' the times"... "Kiss"... 'Purple rain'... 'Little red Corvette'... 'Thieves in the temple'... 🔥🔥

Prince originally wrote this for a band called the Family in 1985 who were a collection of his former band members. After Sinead O'Conner made it a worldwide hit in 1990 Prince decided to start performing his own versions in concerts from time to time. The official video version also features Rosie Gaines singing duet, but the tone is much more sombre and emotional.

All musicians did an amazing version of the song. I love listening to Prince’s take on the song as it was created from a personal space within him and has a lot of soul. Once you enter the Prince rabbit hole you may never come out. I’m a long time admirer of his music and have enjoyed all of his albums and 7 concerts. There was nothing like a Prince concert! All walks of life under one roof singing and dancing along with the man, his music, and different incarnations of an always impeccable band of top notch players. I would recommend Purple Rain live 1985 at the American Music Awards as I feel that embodied the song even more that the official video/scene from the Purple Rain movie which is also the version you would hear from the soundtrack (radio version). After you familiarize yourself with his catalog I would recommend at some point doing a reaction to the Super Bowl performance (2007) where he does a mashup of songs including Purple Rain. Or you could find Purple Rain (Super Bowl) without the other songs. Avoid the one by NFL that says ‘Downpour’ as I believe it has clips of people telling stories of how much it was storming/raining during the performance and in doing so interrupts the performance. A great classic song and official video would be ‘Kiss’ Also, a great showcase of his phenomenal guitar playing would be ‘As My Guitar Gently Weeps’ as a tribute to the late great George Harrison (including Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn, Steve Winwood) There is so many great songs, and each album had a different vibe, and many of his songs are uniquely different from the next, I could go on with recommending songs and videos for a long time but I better stop here. I’m excited that you have so much great music to unpack! Enjoy the ride, and thank you for the video !
