Good luck driving after a copperhead bite. My southern copperhead bit me less than a week ago and I just rolled around on the floor for 6 hours. Then spent the next four hours puking. Then I went out to eat because it wasn’t hurting so bad. Then the pain came back and spread to my butthole and felt like I was being raped by a hunting knife for an hour. Then it wasn’t hurting so bad anymore but spent the next 30 or so hours with nausea. She bit me from a food response. She was wanting out to roam around and so I picked her up and sat her on my lap like usual, but wasn’t thinking about my body heat being higher than usual due to detoxing off methadone and when her heat pits went off she just got stupidly excited and tried to eat my thigh. And so since it was a food response and not a defensive bite, I got a very large dose of venom.

Pre-hospital positioning is a little controversial. Some people recommend keeping the affected extremity at heart level because they fear that elevation will increase the systemic absorption of the venom. Dr. Spencer Greene (well respected and prominent toxicologist) recommends early and aggressive elevation, because the volume of venom is so insignificant that elevation is unlikely to make a difference in absorption. On the other hand, the volume of fluids that accumulate in the affected extremity is significant, and elevation will reduce that swelling. He reports seeing dramatic improvement within 30 minutes of elevation. If the patient is exhibiting systemic signs and symptoms or if there is high likelihood of systemic toxicity, e.g., following a large rattlesnake envenomation, maintain the limb at heart level in the pre-hospital setting. The affected extremity should never be placed below heart level. This will increase the swelling and hydrostatic pressures that lead to tissue injury.

I was bit by a copperhead and didn’t go to the hospital and was fine! I took some Benadryl and Ibuprofen and monitored it. If pain and swelling radiates to your knee seek treatment, otherwise all the hospital will do is clean it (because of bacteria, not venom), give you a tetanus shot, something for pain, some antibiotics, and then bill you $50,000+ (which you could get the next day from your doctor for $100). Very rarely Is CoFab (anti venom) given for copperhead bites.I’ve had small 30 lb dogs survive their bite with zero permanent effects. It will hurt like nothing you have ever experienced, but you won’t die or have nerve damage unless you are allergic. Copperhead Venom is relatively mild. Now if it’s a Rattlesnake or you are unsure of what snake it was, Rush your ass to the hospital ASAP!!! The snake had been caught up by mud tires on the front of the truck and somehow thrown onto the under carriage of the truck. The snake was still alive and crawled down off the under carriage and was under the truck when the man stepped out.

It's amazing how many postings there are that recommend improper actions. I have no idea who Clint Pustejovsky is or where he got his information, but here's the scoop from the Mayo Clinic: If possible, take these steps while waiting for medical help: Move beyond the snake's striking distance. Remain still and calm to help slow the spread of venom. Remove jewelry and tight clothing before you start to swell. Position yourself, if possible, so that the bite is at or below the level of your heart. Clean the wound with soap and water. Cover it with a clean, dry dressing. Note line 4. Position yourself, if possible, so that the bite is AT OR BELOW THE LEVEL OF YOUR HEART Now, allow me to put in my two cents worth. #1...IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, KILL THE SNAKE! Then put the dead snake into a container of some sort and carry it with you to the hospital. There are different types of antivenom for different types of snakes and since everyone is not capable of recognizing the various kinds of snakes, carrying the snake with you will eliminate the guesswork of what kind of snake it was.

@IIBloodXLustII6 жыл бұрын
Elevating it causes the venom to rush from your arm faster. The reason why your hand goes to sleep is that it isn't getting enough blood flow. You want to keep it below your heart so that the venom moves slower. Also you want to apply a pressure bandage if you have one. Actually scratch that. Don't worry about any kind of elevation or anything. Keep calm and get to the hospital.

Imo , lower slows the venom delivery to your heart , but causes more immediate area damage . With a copperhead , that is usually what is worse .

I was told all in the USA and south america ( I dont recall the exact kind world wide ( Its been a long time ago when I was taught . It works on spiders / Even a simple 9 vt batter really helps wasp stings I usually spit on the are and put a NEW 9 volt battery on in or use a lil salt . It really does help ( Not greatly but it does pretty good ). In fact I did it last week I got hit on the hand by a few wasp while painting outside - I putthe 9volt too its - It swelled but very little pain and I did apply charcoal

first thing I would do is shock myself off the car engine . Its kills the venom. then activated charcoal . You'd be fine

Ronbo Nick is this a joke statement or reality
@ronbonick42656 жыл бұрын
reality it was taught to me by the military and I have used it many time on wasp stings ( using a 9v battery) It works, but on a snake bite you want a car coil voltage or a stungun

it was given to my back in my unit in the late 80"s , during a class.. Here I just found this on the web.. www.nytimes.com/1986/08/05/science/the-doctor-s-world-new-shock-therapy-for-snakebites.html So if you get bitten and you do this and it helps send me a subway coupon ..:) beats a DR visit,,,
@ronbonick42656 жыл бұрын
actually I have used a 9volt battery on wasp stings aand it really helps ( mildly but does help) spit on the sting and rub the battery across it... You'll feel it tingle and helps

Kill the snake. Take it to the hospital for positive ID because antivenen is horrifically expensive. You don't want $250,000 worth of treatments for a specific snake bite when they injected a different type venom because you didn't identify it correctly in your panic. (Or take a picture)

+Frank Rizzo What is wrong on so many levels??? The cost of anti-venom, killing the snake to take to the ER with you, or the backing away from it???? Or was it just the part about raising the extremity??? If I were to get bitten by any snake, I’m gonna do my best to kill and recover that snake so that an anti-venom can be made on the spot for the bite. I’m gonna place a tourniquet around that extremity upstream from the bite to slow the venom’s progress toward my heart, and get my ass to a nearby ER! Anything wrong with my ideas on first aid??? Are they also wrong on so many levels??? If they are, instead of just blurting that diatribe out, how about explaining why they are wrong??!!
@56tuffguy6 жыл бұрын
AzzKicker 1234. First of all, never kill the snake. You stand a much higher chance of being bitten again. The antivenom is the same for all pit vipers. Please don't call yourself an expert.

So let me make sure I got this right. If a copperhead bites you get medical attention, how about if you're leg gets bitten off by a shark? Do you need to seek medical attention as well? How about if you put your hand in a fire and it hurts do you remove it from the fire? Gee whiz Mr you are so smart.

What'd he get bitten by? Also, its possible that it was a dry bite. If you get bitten by any kind of venomous snake it is extremely life threatening and isn't an allergic reaction that can be treated with any anti-allergy medicines. Some rattlesnakes and all coral snakes are particularly deadly because they shut down your nervous system and cause you to die from suffocation or cause your heart to stop.
@pigtrapper13296 жыл бұрын
Bradley McDaniel it was a copperhead for sure. Ive been around them for 32 uears, and no it wasn't a dry bite.... his face swelled up the size of a volleyball. The main thing that kills a dog from a copperhead bite is from a collar choking them. Do some research man... benadryl does work. I understand that rattlesnakes and coral snakes are different. I don't know why everyone is so obsessed with going to the hospital for

Tom guy I know that was checking water meters got bit by a baby copperhead... which is worse than a grown one, he sat in his truck for 3 hours and sweated it out before he drove back to the shop. This was early 2000s so cell phones wernt real popular. I'm not worried about a copperhead... I would go to a vet for a rattlesnake bite for sure, but not a hospital
