Bit should be for the Horse's comfort, NOT the rider's control
Now, before I go too far, bitless bridles are wonderful and I truly advocate them and ride my horses bitless, but if people feel they have to use bits, here is what I believe:
The bit should be chosen for the horse's comfort and NOT the rider's control!
If you can't stop or turn your horse in a snaffle, it means they need training, NOT a bigger bit!!!!

Rope halters or traditional hackamores, yes. Bits, no.

That's great Ivy! I've been told by a trainer it's almost impossible to ride a gaited horse without a bit. She said it would be hard to get him to carry his head and back in the right way. I'm curious how you do this. Because I really would like to ride bitless.

Bits are not for the horse's comfort. Be smart and use a rope halter with lead line converted to reins. Simple.
