I stated buying at 900 dollars, sold at 200 something.. had like a worthless piece of bitcoin left but in 2017 bull run it was worth 100x more when I checked long after giving up on crypto. I thought it was a bug. That's when I realised that while I had been asleep, along came 1000s of crytos and an entirely new landscape. After trading with a few alts that quadrupled in just a few short weeks, I was back in the game until came the 2018 to 2019 bear market. Then came the black swan event of march 2020 and the chance to buy more BTC. Had I just done nothing at all, I would have more bitcoin now than I could ever have, and more time to do things that matter. Lesson learned, don't play the market or bet against bitcoin. Trust time and use yours for more valuable things than trading...

Few holes in this logic I cannot wrap my head around. Both Gold and Bitcoin are decentralized entities that serves as a means of storing value. By “100x”ing the technology you do not “2x” peoples demand to store their value in decentralized currencies.

But people who own zero gold could also pool resources into BTC from other stores of value. You could take half of the gold market and people from other markets to get a multiple market cap of gold.

If you're reading these comments, Lex, it would be good to also include some discussion of the weaknesses of any particular cryptocurrencies you discuss on the podcast. Each does have some shortcomings and areas in need of improvement, of course. For example, bitcoin is known to have issues with scalability, energy consumption, as well as the centralization of mining control. It would be interesting to hear what is being done to address these issues. Anyway, thank you for your always excellent podcasts.

What people don't realize is nearly every bitcoin advocate has spent HOURS researching it, working to understand it, how it might fail...etc, and at the end of that effort you're left with the realization that its' success is inevitable. Only people like this OP talk down about it but haven't researched jack shit. This is why I don't feel bad for anyone that's told me they wished they'd have listened to me 4-5 years ago. To do the work is to truly understand bitcoin. Once you do, you'll never go back.

Well he said the same to Jim Cramer in September. Jim put in 500,000 and got +400% returns in 6 months. He was pretty happy. The thing is, if you’ve bought Bitcoin and held it you’ve made money. Bitcoiners just want everyone to move out of devaluing inflating dollars to a better digital system. And if that rewards early adopters, so be it. Who doesn’t want to make their friends rich?

@@GChan129 Yes, and that's why I would suggest Justin to take a look at the inflation rates and the devaluation of his FIAT money and to do some research on the fundamentals of Bitcoin. I hope that he will come to the realisation that he can still be an early adopter if he decides to invest the money that he can miss every month into Bitcoin from now on, instead of saving it on his bank account (no financial advice ;))

Bitcoin is not a store of value, it's mostly a speculative asset, a story telling that is fueled by the most powerful network effect any asset has ever seen, aka the social media world of millenials whom are too lazy to actually build value and rely on some lines of code to make them rich. Now here is the thing, in 2009 the average price of one oz of gold was 1000 USD. Today it's at 1700. That's 1.7 X since 2009. Do you think inflation went more than 1.7 X since 2009 ? If you do you are misinformed. Because I can say for sure that my money today buys a lot more than 60% of what it did in 2009. We are not in Zimbabwe. Yet.

BTW your point about 1 million x inflation from the birth of bitcoin doesn't hold much water. It was a new technology that nobody knew how to price so of course it wasn't trying to peg itself to inflation, thats a ridiculous premise. For what its worth I have a decent amount of precious metal assets and related stocks and also a fair old bag of crypto so I'm not putting one on a pedestal and calling the other shite. I do find it amusing though that the standard trope is that Bitcoin gets labelled a speculative asset like thats a badge of dishonour that spells the eventual doom! Gold is also a speculative asset, thats why I bought it. I don't give two effs that its a nice colour or is a good conductor of electricity just like the majority of people dont care about the financial programability of crypto, smart contracts etc. The young generation and the ones that follow them will drive the digital assets forward and blockchain or a digital improvement of it will be the main stay, but gold will still be around.

Not sure of the exact implications but quantum computers are still pretty far off (decades) from being able to break SHA-256 encryption. This was discussed in a recent episode of the All In Podcast where there was a short discussion about quantum computers

I believe that you could approach SHA256 using quantum computing in a hash format setup as a mining pool and it could be extremely problematic for mining difficulty. However, finding a single collision, yet multiple would be pretty close to impossible considering the one way mathematics.

Quantum computer can't break hash functions, but it in theory can break pubilc/private key cryptography. If you use latest versions of Bitcoin transaction, you are not revealing your public key until you spend from it (only pubkey hash is on the blockchain) But there's the bigger problem that old unused coin can be hacked But all that is just speculation, I doubt that we can see such computer in a 100 years, quantum computers aren't evolving as fast as regular ones, so it's a problem of next generations, I'm sure they'll figure it out

It doesn't make any sense to talk about the "market cap" for btc, it's just the latest price multiplied by the number of coins. It doesn't mean that there was ever $1T going into btc, and it certainly doesn't mean $1T will ever come out of btc. With a publicly traded company the market cap makes some sense, it's basically what you would pay to buy it out (plus or minus some). But with btc and gold it won't tell you anything, and to base a price assumption on this is quite crazy.

From what I personally have seen is that there are lots of young people that put a part of their income into bitcoin every month (because they think it will go to millions of dollars per coin some time in the future). I don't know anybody saving that aggressively in gold. It is kind of like a self fulfilling prophecy and the higher the price of bitcoin moves, the more people will believe in it and start saving in it.

Proof of stake would not be compatible with these usecases because of the drastic trade-offs proof of stake makes, such as trading the objective proof of work with the subjectivity of those holding coins and the anticompetitiveness of simply holding coins.

Doesn’t make any sense. The magnitude of which it improves upon gold is not directly linked to the market cap (5x improvement, 5 the market cap). I’m a BTC bull but this is just a baseless assumption. He should be talking more about the market demand for a store of value mechanism with btc’s properties over Time. Even if BTC was 1000000x superior to gold from a technological standpoint, it would still be worth nothing if, in theory, society didn’t view decentralized, scarce, store of value as a useful thing

BTC was $61k at the time. It was $22k when I commented a year later. It's around $51k now. Maybe it'll go to $1M some day. Anyone who bought at $60k stuck holding the bag over 2 years while NVDA 5x tho. Disclaimer, I bought in at $30k.

It's interesting to compare apples with oranges.... intrinsic value of folding money was linked to gold ...now petrol. Intrinsic value of cryptocurrency is hype, maybe scale-ability and herd mentality (of which I'm not immuned). Profit/s will be made, but fair currencies and level playing fields is a horse that bolted back in biblical times. IMHO.

Intrinsic value seems to be something academics are stuck on. What’s the value of a pixel? Billions if you consider the games industry’s micro transactions alone. When I email someone I don’t have to wonder what country they’re in, or get permission to email them. So why do I have to deal with those things to send money. The ability to send strangers money as easily as a like has value to me.
