With the Old Breed is the most amazingly gut wrenching and descriptive books I’ve ever read. The first time I tried reading it I was about 13 and I couldn’t handle how graphic it was and couldn’t comprehend it. It wasn’t until I was 16 I read it and it changed my perspective on things. I understood my grandpa more why he was how we was when I was little how with Alzheimer’s all he remembered was combat .

I think Leckie’s immediate postwar experience is heartbreakingly common. Word comes down that the war is over and the medical personnel who didn’t see a moment of battle clear out to celebrate, seemingly forgetting, at least for a moment, the men who did the fighting, bleeding and dying. His parents seem put out by his return. The cab driver is the only one who understands and shows him respect until Vera.

Well said. For another view of the struggles of American servicemen returning home after the war, I recommend the 1946 movie The Best Years of Our Lives. It won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture.

After BoB and TP you are qualified to watch He Has Seen War, sort of an 11th episode to TP. It deals with how these men readjusted to civilian life.

Again I recommend listening to “With the Old Breed and the Cost of War” speech by Eugene it’s about 36 minutes and he gets in great detail. It’s a still image so idk if you can make a video on it or not but highly recommend listening.

I prefer The Pacific over Band of Brothers for many of the reasons you mention. The characters here were far more compelling and relatable.
