It’s crazy how different the three versions are. It takes some major patience to rework a song three separate times.

4 times - the original version with Bogdan Raczynski was also radically different

This was the original version, it seems. From a New Yorker profile that was written when she was still working on the album: “This version began with two minutes or so of vaguely medieval-sounding choral writing, a misty mass of overlapping lines. Then big bass notes began to growl, and in a matter of seconds the song transformed itself before one’s ears into the kind of quirkily ebullient anthem that Björk specialized in earlier in her career.”

She actually probably wrote it shortly after Vespertine was released since a very early version was performed on the Vespertine Tour in Italy.

@@circolombisque2285 Bjork actually wrote the song during the Vespertine recording and writing sessions between 1998-2001. Bjork left 'Who Is it?' out of Vespertine, since she felt that the song "came from a different family." Similar to how the song 'All Is Full of Love' was almost left out of her 1997 album Homogenic, and was going to be put in Vespertine since it encompasses the theme of love.

Andrew Mora Cornelio That’s pretty neat, I never knew that about AIFoL. Just makes me wonder what songs she cut from Vulnicura or Utopia that she may put on a future album

xtcandrew I think that it was released, as the first version of the song was made with Bogdan Raczynski. It was released as a remix on the rephlex label.

His embrace, a fortress It fuels me And places A skeleton of trust Right beneath us Bone by bone Stone by stone If you ask yourself patiently and carefully: Who is it ? Who is it that never lets you down ? Who is it that gave you back your crown ? And the ornaments are going around Now they're handing it over Handing it over He demands a closeness We all have earned a lightness Carry my joy on the left Carry my pain on the right If you ask yourself patiently and carefully: Who is it ? Who is it that never lets you down ? Who is it that gave you back your crown ? And the ornaments are going around Now they're handing it over Handing it over

She probably didn't because it would be redundant with Ancestors. I bet to say that this song is mother of both Who is it and Ancestors.
