I literally just had this exact conversation on size, and age absolutely matters. I’m 42 yrs old, 5’5” and 165lbs, 18% body fat. I’m a purple belt, and train 10 hours per week, primarily no gi. I also lift pretty heavy 5 days per week. I have been doing that for about 2 years. I was training with this (3) striped blue belt that’s 25 yrs old, 225lb power lifter about 4 months ago at an open mat. We rolled for 17 minutes nonstop no one was able to get any submissions the full 17 minutes. I was in bottom in half guard working a sweep just freaking gassed. He was getting frustrated with my guard. This dude finally just lifted me in the air like I was a sheet of paper. I was in the air over his freaking head. He’s a real cool guy and just laughed and put me back down. Dang profoundly life changing. Just literally helpless. So our rule of thumb: 25-35 lbs is a full belt rank, -10 years is a full belt rank. So alway change your game to adapt to bigger, stronger, younger guys…

In my personal experience, I am young quite athletic. I weight 175, I can handle well newer guys weighing around 230( 55lbs difference). I can fight but with a lot of trouble guys 240-245. But guys over 260 (if not just fat). there is a few thing I can do. My leverages are just not strong enough to compensate. At a certain point size because too much. Against bigger guys you need the speed, get em on the ground as fast as possible even if not the best position. Move around keep em down and wait for an opportunity. but, I feel like if you are 250 tough you can handle guys 350, as at a point size has diminishing returns. (btw blue belt level)
@ConveyApp
@ConveyApp Жыл бұрын
@@NBeaver-bx4yl I feel that way too. I’m starting to push 170lbs at the moment. I just turned 43 and I’m a baby purple belt. My age seems to be a factor and my weight has dropped a lot over the past 18 months. I can handle mid level white to new blue belts at higher weights without much effort. But right around that (2)+ strip level things start to fall apart. Particularly if they are some what athletic. I’m super strong for my size but that only carries me so far, and I’m not that fast. Old joints and stuff. So everyone should really understand and accept their limitations during this BJJ journey.

@@ConveyApp yeah what is amazing about BJJ is not that you can beat any one of any size. Its that naturally you would have no chance against someone 70lbs more than you, but with BJJ you actually do have a solid fighting chance. It levels the playing field a lot, but this aint magic

@@NBeaver-bx4yl I got my purple belt about 3-4 weeks ago. Starting last week I got a freaking target on my back. Everyone that is a lower ranking belt is going 110% on me. It’s grueling… I knew this would happen but it’s different experiencing it. All these guys are 20+ yrs my junior and like 20-35lbs on me. I’m also short at 5’5” and am 165lbs. I respect your mindset about not wanting anyone to go to jail but in a situation like that the best option probably would've been to call the police before ever laying hands on the guy. He was clearly violent and for various liability reasons its sadly the best choice. Glad it worked out in the end. You're a great story teller with good perspective!

Absolutely, that's why we have weight classes. But of course most big fat guys do not have the cardio to do much. And I'm sure we have all seen giant muscle men getting submitted by white belts under 200 pounds, once they learn a little of course that doesn't happen because size does matter.

Thank you for telling the truth. I have several acquaintances that don’t train at all that have no grip on reality - 1) as it relates to their fighting (“I just see red man” says the guy who works behind a desk all day) or 2) that I can’t take anyone any size because I’m a purple belt. BJJ really checks your ego - I’m been humbled by larger stronger more athletic white belts - especially wrestlers. No rules in street fight - where there are guys that can literally pick you and break you in half and then wrap your belt around your head. Being humble and deescalating - great advice.

I think this will lead into a good discussion of what's lost in translation from portuguese to english when people talk self defense. Also the Rorion v. Helio perspective. Helio always said bjj is to survive and not get murdered if you run into a guy like you're describing, because you're fucked. He used to say surviving is winning. Rorion was trying to tap into that american disposable income and sell some merch, so he basically said self defense is magic. Old school dudes from brazil are very aware of the size issue.
@ln5747

@Bill Stevens that's debatable. I think you way over downplay the ability of accomplished competition BJJers by calling it pyjama playing in a padded room. Full contact sparring is full contact sparring and most who train will easily fuck up those who don't, regardless of street or dojo. Anyone who trains with either a self-defence or comp emphasis still knows they'd completely handle their newbie white belt self in the street. Untrained are literally useless, groin strikes or not, with the exception of a large size difference or a beginner practitioner.

@ln5747
@ln5747 Жыл бұрын
@@davidd854 depends what you mean like nothing? In a BJJ match of course they're useless. In a street fight they are close to useless, aside from a very large athletic difference based on size/age, but must be significant. Untrained people have close to zero fighting ability.
@davidd854
@davidd854 Жыл бұрын
@@ln5747 Yeah no. I think you're overrelying on your BBJ skills. Lots of factors in a street fight, difficulty in transferability of BJJ to street scenario (concrete floor, objects around), inclusion of striking possibility. I'm just going on what Wilke said in another video here. You're still dealing with a grown man who's presumably going to try to fuck you up. So I wouldn't count them away to easy, especially if your martial arts background doesn't go outside of BJJ.

I'm 48 now. This video had me laughing and shaking my head at the same time flashing back to my college days when I used to bounce at Fat Tuesday in Coconut Grove, Florida. The best and worst job I ever had. Positives were the friends in the biz I made and the parties after hours. Negatives were babysitting inebriated assholes that couldn't just enjoy themselves without starting trouble and the occasional having to go to task on people. It didn't dawn on me at the time (a lot of things didn't dawn on me in my early 20s) but that was a really dangerous way to make a buck. The crew was tight like family, we took care of each other and there were several of us (large bar with many patrons nightly). One night I will never ever forget - got into a huge bar brawl with off duty officers on the premise! We had 2 officers onsite from a different municipality working that evening and it was them and the bounce staff against a party of off duty officers from another district. What a freakin' mess! I'm 6'3 and walk around at 210 lbs., athletic build with striking / grappling training and I still lift heavy. I had to jump on a giant's back that night and choke him out. I felt like a little kid getting tossed around in the time it took for him to take a nap. If you have other options...don't do it kids...a few of my friends in the biz back in the day had teeth knocked out, fingers broken and one even got stabbed in the stomach (he ended up being fine). Too many other ways to make a few dollars when you're young.

This is a clear example of it, if we supposed it was only 1 of you to fight the big NFL guy, a black belt in bjj and background in fighting will make the difference in increasing your odds of surviving and/or escaping.

By your logic no reason to get his or any other instructionals at all to learn new approaches from people whom you respect. In the contact of guard passing videos would be nice to get to get his approach to such an essential and common position in which to be stuck. No joke, you’re absolutely right that size makes a big difference. I think any grappler who’s grappled big dudes understands just how hard it can be. How you react changes depending on the attackers size. This is also why weapons are so important and should be more socially accepted. However I understand that working security like that at a bar has to be all empty hands fighting. If you were alone though, a weapon may be needed.

really enjoy your stories and insight on how we can fool ourselves. I learned the hard way: i´m 5´7 " and 152 pounds at 48 years old right now. Played rugby all my life, and trained BJJ for nearly 5 years (blue belt), although i haven´t been training BJJ for 6 years now more or less. I keep my self in shape with calisthenics, running, surfing when I can and playing soccer in the weekends on a +45 years league. So last year during a soccer match some guy fouled me cinically, the ball wasn´t even close to where I was, and I lost it. This guy was way taller than me, probably at 6´2" and in my head I was thinking about bringing him to the ground and put some pressure by grabbing his shirt collar just to show him... Thing is I did managed to bring him down easily and was on top of him (some kind of side control) puting pressure on his neck and really not having a plan on how to deal with this guy afterwards if he wanted to have a go at me. Guess I just thought about keeping top control and let some teammates stop the wrestling. Thing is, the guy indeed wanted to have a go after all... He pushed my waist and made me start to raise and got me to my kess, he then shoved me backwards (152 pounds ain´t much right?) and as I fell, i used my right arm to stop the fall while my left hand continued to grab his collar. I felt a pinch on my right shoulder but I was just thinking about how I was going to put my right arm through his neck for a RNchoke (he was with his back to me at the time) and just give him what he was asking for. I went for it but my right arm was not moving... wtf? it was then when his teammates and mine showed up and save my ass. I dislocated the right shoulder and the guy was about to turn around on me and surely fuck me up... Then the pain came and I realized what a fool I was, just for an ego trip. Lesson learned. My Bjj fantasy went away :) 4 months till I was confident enough to start trainging and playing again.

If this guy worried you guys, the cops would have had to escalate the use of force. These people are out there and your story brings it home in a way that may help save some lives.

Found this relatable as a bouncer here in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧. A year ago a team of 4 of us at a nightclub were dragging out a 6.4ft male who weight approximately 115kg whom was a bodybuilder on steroids as well as other drugs. The male was attacking people on the dance floor. We had to put him to the floor at least five times including on the stair case. I am 6.2 weighed 95kg at time and was well built with 1.5 years of bjj training, 3 years of Thai boxing training, 2.5 years of judo training and a year of mma training. And there is no way I could have taken on that guy if I was alone.

I’ve picked up guys that were completely out that are 200lbs and it is hell! I’m pretty sure that’s how I got a hernia and had to have mesh surgery. Anyway my point is 270lbs even for two guys is insanely hard and these two did an amazing job even moving him.

Good story- I like to see fighters with good attitudes and mindsets. IMO a moral set of principles should be taught along with training- helps to keep you out of legal problems too.

When I worked bar security we trained and practiced team tactics. Having a plan and a backup plan makes a world of difference. Having teammates who stay back from the action ready to keep people off your back or to move in and help made our job safer for us.

Grappling techniques are probably the most affected techniques when it comes to size, it takes speed out of the power equation, so all you are left with is, your physical strength, endurance, leverage, and body mass. At least with striking techniques, a punch, etc. can benefit from the speed of your technique giving you an extra element to add to your power. It's still not as good as being the bigger guy but it's something. The absolute best would be one of the stick fighting martial arts, or even a sword martial art, if you are armed with a solid metal baton. This would definitely equalize some size difference considerably, but as you talked about there is the civil and legal liabilities, not to mention, carrying a baton on your belt for the 1 time you really need it, also equals a hundred times you had that weapon on your belt for your opponent to get a hold of during all those times you didn't have to draw it.

Thank you for your honesty and it goes a long way. Especially since there are bjj/self defense instructions who say otherwise without ever getting in a fight on the streets. Have the bjj community have never been a a street fight and have no idea what it take to win. Which brings me to my next question what’s the point in training any art if you just happen to encounter such an individual and there’s not to much that will work on a guy like that.. If you had been alone fighting that guy what could you have done that would work? I guess in the end size and strength are key in the streets no matter what you train in. By the way loved your follow up video on the subject of street fighting and bjj. I wish more bjj instructors were that honest and had half your experience.

The point to training is first that it did help them survive this encounter and secondly most people are not the size of football players, if the size difference is only 20-30lbs than training can make up the difference.

Well said. I weigh about 100kg/220lbs now I'm old, but when I was training Kyokushin I fought at 70kg/155lb. Natural weight for me is about 75kg/165lb. Some of the boys training were in the 140-150kg range - 310-330lbs. Unless you've experienced what that sort of weight difference does, it's really hard to get your head around. Especially when some of them can throw head kicks from clinch range. When I went to open weight I gained up to 85kg for my first tournament - that's 197lbs. My second fight I gave away 61kg/133lbs. It was like a 10 year old kid fighting his uncle. Each body shot I came completely off the ground and moved a foot width to the side. Absolutely incredible experience. There was a 205kg/450lb guy I rolled with when I was doing BJJ. He was so big I couldn't get my knees down in mount - I could barely get my feet on the floor! If he hadn't been a really gentle fella, and gassed so quick he would have been an absolute nightmare if he decided to have a go at someone.

I’m having flashbacks of drunken yard wrestling with my friends growing up. They’re twins, bout 5’9” maybe 140 pounds a piece, I’m 6’6” and at the time about 290 . Always started out fun, and always eventually went to little pissed off guys trying to bring the giant down. Used to toss them like rag dolls! There was literally nothing they could do. I had the reach, the weight, the leverage. No real skills or anything though honestly, just big and strong. Comes in handy delivering appliances!
