Understanding Jiu Jitsu by John Danaher, Bernardo Faria & Gordon Ryan
Jiu-Jitsu is a continually evolving martial art that is now required for anybody who wants to practice mixed martial arts or just wants to defend themselves. In this video, John Danaher - one of the most famous and respected Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Coaches takes 5x World Champion Bernardo Faria & ADCC Champ Gordon Ryan through an explaination of body mechanics as they relate to Jiu Jitsu.
John is explains that Jiu Jitsu is a system that requires 2-6 steps depending on the situation and how much resistance an opponent gives. While both athletes, Gordon Ryan & Bernardo Faria both practice Jiu Jitsu, they both have different areas that they specialize in. Mr Ryan is best known for his leg attacks, back attacks and his unique system of passing- all without the gi, while Mr Faria is best known for his sweeps from half guard and his pressure passing on top - in the gi.
To learn Jiu Jitsu you need not to be fast, strong, flexible or explosive, you only need to understand the body, how it moves and have the ability to follow directions. Watch as 3 of the best teachers in the art and sport of Jiu Jitsu shed some light on the process. We hope this video and many of the others at bjjfanatics.com help you along your Jiu Jitsu journey.

BJJ Fanatics was started by a pair of black belts (Bernardo Faria & Michael Zenga) who feel that nothing is more important than improving your BJJ skills as much as possible in the least amount of time. Their aim was to create a shop for BJJ Students who don’t look at BJJ as a sport - but as a lifestyle.

E obrigado. 1. Take fight to ground Top system 2. Get past dangerous legs (passing guard) and into dominant upper body pin Neon belly (ok punching position) Mount (better punching position) Rear mount (best position for punching/submission) 3. Work through hierarchy of pins Movements around opponents body to go from pin to pin The more that pin offers control and leads to striking ability the more reward the pin gets 4. Submissions Joint lock or strangle lock to finish

I’m usually a guy that just jumps into things, BJJ included. At times in class I found terms I was unfamiliar with (such as “posturing up”) or slightly lost in what my current goal was (submission). You come to realize that BJJ is so much more than the goal of “submit your opponent” and when you think about it in the steps that John and co lay out here, you can break down your match/altercation into smaller, sub goals allowing you to be more successful in the ultimate goal of submission. Like another commenter said, this video is gold - it’s given me two years of knowledge usually found by trial and error or talking with the higher belts at your gym in only 25 minutes. Amazing!

Knee on belly I think is the most annoying technique (if at the bottom). After my first week of attending Jiu Jitsu class, during resistance training, my partner which is way more experienced than I am did the knee on belly on me. Not just the knee on belly but he did a great job of sliding his knee more towards my sternum which Made me feel like my ribs were going to shatter.

This is really good stuff. It would be nice if John could explain more in deep why jiu jitsu helps overcoming the size advantage of the opponent. From this video you can say that jiu jitsu works because it´s a systematic way of fighting and it keeps us safe(r) from the knock out (this knock out could come from a skilled little striker as well). My question: is jiu jitsu more successful in overcoming size differences than other systematized ways of combat like boxing, muay Thai etc? . Anyways, thanks for the upload!!! osss

I think the answer is simply that grappling in general and BJJ in particular is more knowledge-based. It allows you, more than any other art that I'm aware of, to trump your opponent's athleticism with your own technical knowledge. An easy example would be the triangle choke: If your opponent doesn't KNOW that being in that position is bad news, he probably won't try to stop you from getting there. On the other hand, pretty much everyone knows that getting punched in the face is bad, and will therefore do their best to avoid it.

This is the answer to how a smaller man can beat a bigger opponent from the BOTTOM. It does not explain how is it easier to take a big man down than to knock him out. I want to clarify that i ask this as a bjj practicioner who is interested in the jiu jitsu system, not because i want to state that bjj is not effective. Thanks!

@@gustavwalterson6541 Good question. Takedowns, such as the Double Leg, are more a function of position and timing than strength and athleticism because it uses the natural mechanics of the opponent’s body to shift their centre of gravity away from their base of support.

This is an amazing video summing up BJJ as a useful system; However, I do have one criticism. The over underpass is amazing for sport, but the back of Bernardo's head was super exposed to elbows from Gordon; not ideal for the street

It's interesting that BJJ can be broken down into training methods, conceptual methods, various flow analysis, and goal seeking. Danaher is wonderful in his method of trying to give those practicing it a logical set of methods. You may be good as an instinctive athlete understanding it through body feel (proprioception), but it's always important to have a conceptual game to help you progress. There are various things bjj and subgrappling allows - a variety of different types of opponents, a variety of 'games' and positions, catch and release, hard combative rolling (like Eddie Bravo does) and it all has high authenticity, movement, pressure, energy and applicability.
