I might be wrong, but I'm quite confident I heard from Gordon itself that going to hug your opponent's head without making an underhook in any of his arm first, is going to facilitate the kipping escape for him.

It's seems like the position and pressure of his hips make it more difficult for the bottom player to place frames in good positions for kipping

Its all about control, first learn to get the position. Armbar is easy if you get to this s mount. You can even tap someone with pressure from s mount with your legs and arms, before even you attack the arm.
