I think I have an explanation for the "DVD Player is not set up" message. In very early PS2 consoles (like the first ones released in Japan, SCPH-10000 and I believe the SCPH-15000 also had this problem), the DVD playback capability didn't come from the factory, on the consoles themselves, given the PS2's rushed release. What Sony did instead was providing a disc in the box, that would allow to install said capability onto a Memory Card, taking advantage of the PS2's ability to read updates from MCs (the same ability that would be exploited by FMCB years later, and no, not having a MC wouldn't be an issue in this case, since the first Japanese models came with one), thus allowing for DVDs to be played. Knowing this, we can safely assume the error message shows up when the user inserts a DVD without having that installed. Later Japanese models and ofc, the ones released in other regions came with DVD playback built-in, so this error message was rendered obsolete. As to why it showed up to this user with FMCB, that I don't know, but I'm not aware of any similar issues for other people.

I know of at least three more errors the PS2 has: 1. "Disc read error." - Appears on the browser screen when the system cannot read the disc. Usually due to a faulty laser and possibly accompanied with loud clicking noises from the disc drive. 2. "Disc cannot be played due to regional restrictions." - Happens when you insert an out-of-region DVD video disc into the console, for example a Region 1 disc in a European Region 2 console. 3. Blinking red light - The console shuts off and this appears when the console has overheated. Usually due to a faulty or blocked fan.

Ok, so let me set the scene... It’s 2007. Little 4-year-old me is sitting in my room at 10pm with the lights off playing the PS2. I decide to change the disc and put Crazy Taxi (epic game) into the console. I reset it, climb up my bunk bed and sit down to play. Then the RSOD fades in. I kid you not, I screamed at the top of my fucking lungs in pure horror for a solid two minutes. My parents come bursting through the door and scream “What’s wrong, Sam?!!!” I burst into tears, run into my mums arms and say something about the PS2 wanting to kill me as my dad sorts out the disc. I didn’t sleep in my room for about a week afterwards. The sound still gives me chills to this day... but the very same PS2 is still set up in my room and has been in the same place for around 12 years. I still love it though, even if it did scare me shitless 😂

Yeah, many people got RSOD by inserting badly scratched disc, many people knew about that but in video it wasn't mentioned so i just needed to writte it here. I personally had it too, and well, i saw it pretty much. For example, an really badly Gran Turismo 4 Disc, it had some big scratch that looked like infinity symbol. I don't remember when i get that screen for the first time, because i saw it pretty much.

I think it's because the scratches are so bad that the console simply doesn't recognize it as a proper format disc, I don't believe it's explicitly due to scratched discs inherently, and I don't think Sony really considered that this would be a problem, as the screen is clearly meant specifically for discs that are recognizable as improper format, in which case creating such an eerie error screen like this would make a lot more sense for the purpose of something like burned discs instead of just simply a disc that was unreadable, which has an error message of its own, much more simple and harmless. Personally though, I can say that this definitely was a problem that I myself have experienced, and Sony didn't seem to have really put much thought into this message before releasing the PS2, and never got to fixing it since I'm pretty sure this is a problem on all models, either way the PS2 wasn't too great at differentiating simple, scratched discs from improper format, which definitely led to the scarring of many children (myself included,) but what are you gonna do?

This red screen actually felt pretty chill to me as a kid. It didn’t have any sudden sounds, the colors weren’t harsh, and it even said “please” in a very polite tone. But I *did* scream whenever the Wii did that little “blppp bong” sound when there was no disc inserted

The red screen of death can also happen to heavily scratched ps2 discs even if it's the right region, it happened to me when I tried to play my old copy of Finding Nemo on the ps2 recently

Oh I forgot, there's another PS3 error where a random game (like Minecraft) will freeze where you can't do anything until a screen says "This game failed to load" and then having to slowly wait to be able to quit game.

1:00 - On this part you're right but also missing some info. To get an RSOD you can easily just try to run a bad disc (eg: unrecognized software, PC games get the RSOD the most, damaged discs be it scratches or stains or even just general degradation, or running a pirate/bootleg/modified disc of any region of any of the 2 systems.) 2:57 - This was actually unique in some way. I vaguely remember the PS2 rejecting lens cleaning software immediately. Rather than telling me "disc read error" or "the disc cannot be read" it brings you straight to the RSOD the second it rejects the software. Odd. Really odd. I mean I can see why of that software isn't recognized like I said earlier but if it was to clean the lens then that shouldn't have happened. I think me and my parents had to buy another PS2 because of this error, it left me and my dad under the impression that the lens was actually fucked and the only way to fix the issue was to buy a new PS2. Damn. 4:08 - Of course this one is a common error. But I mentioned this part because inserting a damaged disc enough times will (seemingly) piss the system off and bring you back to 1:00, the RSOD if done enough times. I've actually had disc reading errors before. I have a memory of trying to have my copy of Driver: Parallel Lines run on my PS2 but when the disc wasn't read it wouldn't come up with any errors. If I can suggest something for you to try with the PS2 next time it's to jam (or to be safer, listen or feel the vibration of the disc tray) and notice what happens when you get 1 of the 3 errors. Also listen to it while it's reading a severely damaged/stained disc and can't read the data off it. Not sure if it applies to all models, but when reading a severely damaged disc you'll get clicking sounds, and if you manage to jam the sensor behind the power button for the system, you can lower the tray and get a small peek inside. If you do this and watch it's behavior when reading a damage disc, you'll see that the clicking is part of the lens **blinking**. When the disc is considered invalid or can't be read in general the disc stops spinning.. You're stuck on the RSOD until you lift the tray, which removes contact from the sensors, triggering it to go back. Quick question for you guys: During gameplay, have you ever had your game just stop on you and give you an RSOD? I never had this issue before but that's why I asked is if it happened for anyone else.

My PS2 brings up the RSOD whenever a disk with a blue mirror side is inserted. Even though the disc and console are both the same region (PAL).

@@ellwill5709 yeah the laser needs to be calibrated just right to play blue discs and as the laser gets weaker it will eventually fail altogether. There are tutorials about how to alter the voltage and ohms of the laser to make it read discs better. If it can read a blue disc it can read anything

RSoD can occour for one of the following reasons: Disc region does not match the console's BIOS (as shown in this video) Pirated or a backup game is inserted in an unmodded system Foreign disc is inserted (e.g. a PC game disc) Disc is scratched, dirty or damaged in other way (altough disc read error is more common for this one) Bad lens in the DVD drive (but disc could not be read is also more common for this kind of situation)

A PS3 error I know is that it shows a screen that says "This model is not compatible for PS2 data" if that helps. The PS2 disc has to be a clean one otherwise the error won't pop up. You can thank me later on if your PS3 video ever came.

Bruh, it made me scared the shit out of me, while my parents are sleeping, me and my little sister 11 years ago, I played it, while my sister is jumping around waiting to play The screen appeared and I was like Me: AHHH GO BACK TO OUR BEDROOM my sister: AHHHH ITS SCARY I never closed and turned off the ps1 console, my mom woked up to get a milk from fridge in 12 am, my mom heard the sound is still playing, and mom spotted the tv is still turned on, dad wokes up, and fixed the console, dad woked up us just to enjoy hot chocolate milk in 12 am while my mom is watching tv and my dad is fixing the console in 12 am, we didn't sleep though, my parents were still awake while we are playing around, in the 4 am, the console is finally fixed so we played, our neighbors always ask why are we still awake at 12 am, and yeah...it happened It happened, but luckily my parents didn't grounded me but to make sure we're okay
