From time to time I hop on Trailforks’ fullscreen map feature and just explore the world looking for cool trails. During one of those explorations I found Oak Mountain in Birmingham, Alabama.
Any time I see a long double black diamond trail in a park with several other trails I get excited. I always figure there’s gold in them thar hills.
Lucky for me I had quite a few people reach out to guide me in Birmingham, so I got to see most of Oak Mountain AND the Civil Rights Institute and some other pieces of the city.

Great video, Brian. Thanks for sharing this latest adventure. Congratulations on making the decision to bail on that descent (@ 19:40). As we all progress in this wonderful sport, it is sometimes hard to say "enough". Smart to draw the line like that, particularly when riding alone.

I've been watching Brain since Redemption in Fruita Co and Aex. And the one thing that stood out is Brian's ability to comment and give local history on the FLY while riding. I ride in the Chicago area all year long. When it's below freezing especially like 10 degrees, I'll have on two pairs of socks, plastic bags over them in mtb shoes inside cold weather booties with bike tights on, a T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, heavy shirt, and wind breaker with a balaclava on my head and either sunglasses or ski goggles. Crazy. Takes forever to get dressed and then strip all the wet clothing off when you get home. That's why we live with such high intensity during the summer! Can't wait!

thats awesome. I studied mortuary science in Birmingham and would ride oak man every week! I first rode it on my hardtail because it was the only thing that would fit in the cab of my tacoma but finally ventures out on my full squish later. lets just say that big rock roll was a little more sketchy on a 120mm hardtail.

Regarding the sticky dropper. Probably has been said and checked, but make sure your have good pressure in there, there's a valve under the seat(you have to take it off) that you can stick your shock pump into and increase/decrease pressure. Make sure it's fully extended when using the shock pump.
